I promised myself I would watch the entire speech, but about 15 minutes
into it, I lost interest. That and the fact I couldn't throttle the guy

Snuck in front of last night's rerun (and it was my wife's birthday, she
was glad they ran that show for her) was a clip of OFF reacting to the Prez'
dis. I just got most of it on tape. Did everyone else see it?

Yes, and KUDOS to the Simpsons for returning fire back to Bush. That made my
whole evening. (They sure put that together real fast.) We're all waiting
for the depression to end.

Just to set the record straight, the speech from which the clip of Bush
was taken was NOT the State of the Union address. I saw the Simpson quote
on a replay of a Bush speech on the news Sunday or Monday night, and I
also saw the entire State of the Union speech on TUESDAY night. If Bush
had said his quote in the S.U. speech, I *really* would have questioned
his grasp with reality!
David Brecheisen
I didn't see the S.U. speech but the next day there were several mentions
on the net and in the local newspaper about the Waltons/Simpson's comment.
Now I'm confused. When *did* he make that comment. I agree, to tell
the American people that he wants them to be like a pitiful, impoverished
family during the depression doesn't sound very smart. Surely his
speech writers/editors would have caught that one in advance.

Bush made the comment in a speech the Monday before the Simpsons spot.
According to Eric Jablow, the speech was to a group of religious brodcasters.
The state of the Union Speech was on Tuesday, the day after. Then the
Simpsons was Thursday. I guess Bush was trying to appeal to the sensibilities
of his audience when he made the statement that American families should be
more like the Waltons than the Simpsons. That makes a little more sense for
Bush to say that to that audience than it does for Bush to say that to Congress
and the American people, but Bush is still goofy.

Bush did make the commments in the S.U. speech, and he apparently also
had made the same comment the previous weekend to some religious
audience. So the fact that he had the chance to drop the comment proves
he just wasn't thinking (big surprise there--we're talking about the man
who said "I know the economy is in a free fall". FREE FALL? Way to
inspire the ol' consumer confidence!)
I wonder if George has ever even bothered to watch The Simpsons. It
seems rather symbolic of Bush's perceived lack of connection with the
common man.

=\= My initial reaction to Bush's quote was just like Bart's.
And then I thought of another contrast: the Waltons didn't
seem to know much about birth control. The Simpsons know
plenty (e.g., use "Strikes" instead of "Barts"). Certain
Bush administration policies are pretty much opposed to the
free exchange of birth control information.
=\= Matt Groening has said he wants _The_Simpsons_ to (****)
annoy Republicans. First William Bennett, now Bush. (*******)
Looks like he's being pretty successful! :-) (*********)
