Okay, I give Up, in the episode with the cat burglar what the hell
is the reference to the guy floating down the river in a car. He screams
at bart "Hey kid, I though you told me this stream was shallow" or something
to that effect.
Also, what was the chase scen from in that episode. Is it from the
pink panther? Scavenger Hunt? or something I don't know about?

They do say verbal insults hurt more than physical pain. They are, of
course, wrong as you will soon find out when I stick this toasting fork in
your head.
The whole chase, as well as the guy in the stream, was a reference to
the movie IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. In that movie, a dying ex-
con (played by Jimmy Durante) sends a group of people (who stop their
cars on the highway to help him) in search of a fortune buried
under "A big W." The original treasure hunters---Sid Caesar, Mickey
Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Jonathan Winters, and a few others---
inevitably attract more and more people into the chase as they race
to find the loot. One of the people sucked into the treasure hunt
was Phil Silvers, who in taking a short cut was conned by a kid into
driving across a "shallow" stream. The dialogue and gestures in THE
SIMPSONS were the same as in the movie....
I'd love to know who the guy in the car was supposed to refer to.
That one has plauged me ever since I saw the episode. The chase and the
end, where the palm trees in the background are in the shape of a giant
capital 'W' is from an old (60's - early 70's) comedy called
"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"
Can't remember who stars in it. The plot is basically that a rich
old fart dies and there's a scavanger hunt in his will.

I think you're mixing MMMMWorld with "Scavenger Hunt". Both terrrific
movies. The Simpson's scenes were from MMMMWorld. The guy in the river was
Phil Silvers. I highly recommend the movie - it had everyone who was
anyone in comedy during that time.

Anyone else hear the story about 3 years back that some British woman
was wearing a Phil Silvers T-shirt in Tibet, and it was mistaken for
an image of the Dalai Lama (the Chinese didn't care too much for that).
Phil Silvers/Dalai Lama: now there's a memorable juxtaposition!
The Dalai Lama does have a funny laugh, though.

One of the best I've ever heard! From the belly, full and roaring, as if
his whole soul is laughing - most excellent.

Tell me about it. Last week I was trying to describe a vice-president
