These were the writing greats that made OFF an outstanding show for its
first five seasons. The current crop of writers can only pale in
comparison.
Its still a good show and I watch it, but it's not what it used to be.
Jake
BTW, it would be nice to see MG write an episode entirely. (He wrote
"Colonel Homer")
Excactly! I think Conan's effort is highly overestimated. If we look at
the current poll of best/worst episodes by Ben Collins:
BEST:
7 Last Exit to Springfield (9F15)
5 Lisa's Substitute (7F19)
4 Deep Space Homer (1F13)
4 Selma's Choice (9F11)
3 Bart Sells His Soul (3F02)
3 Lisa's Wedding (2F15)
2 Bart vs. Australia (2F13)
2 Boy Scoutz N The Hood (1F06)
2 Homer at the Bat (8F13)
2 Homer the Heretic (9F01)
2 Homer's Enemy (4F19)
2 King-Size Homer (3F05)
2 Marge vs. the Monorail (9F10)
2 Radio Bart (8F11)
2 22 Short Films About Springfield (3F18)
...only one (9F10) of top scoring episodes is written by Conan O'Brien.
I do not mean, that Conan was a bad writer. Monorail episode is great -
for example. I just want to point out (as Jake also did), that names
like Vitti, Kogen, Wolodarsky, Oakley, Swartzwelder, Jean, Reiss,
Martin, Stern and many others have provided us the THE classical
episodes of seasons 2-4, and should not be ignored even if they are not
otherwise well-known as Conan is. And, that you cannot pick any writer
and say that he is the one who made the Simpsons great. The list of good
Simpsons writers is much longer than my list above. Look up _your_
favorite episodes from the episode guide and see for yourself how many
writers wrote those particular ones, if you don't take my word for it.

(A) Talk-show hosts making seven figures a year rarely leave their
high-profile jobs in order to write for sitcoms.
(B) If they are going to bring back writers, better to bring back those from
seasons 1-3: Jon Vitti, David M. Stern, Jay Kogen & Wallace Wolodarsky,
Al Jean & Mike Reiss.
(C) With the exception of "New Kid on the Block", Conan's episodes, while
often funny, are very shallow, with little of the human depth that sets
"The Simpsons" apart from other series.

Why did these writers leave? Were they fired?
Marge vs the Monorail was a fantastic episode. Conan was great. I wish he'd
return every so often to do an episode. Too bad most of the really great
writers have moved on and have been replaced with the likes of David Cohen.
Next season will probably be OFF's last- maybe some of the older writer will
come back to ebd the show on a high note.

I don't think it's so much his actual writing, but more his involvement (along
with others from the "old school") Personally, I've been disappointed for the
past few years with the show. Yes, there are high and low points, but, say,
four years ago, the whole season would have been (for me) great.
Of course, I'm just (pause) one man. What can I do?
