What is the name of the Simpson's cat. I know they had an old cat name
Snowball but it died. I know because Lisa wrote a poem about it "I had a
cat named Snowball, he died, he died." I know it got run over by a car.
The dog's name is Santa's Little Helper but what is the name of the black
cat that romes around in all of the episodes. Is it Snowball2?

Here's a question I've wanted to ask for a while. Why IS the dog named
Santa's Little Helper? It's not exactly, well, a usual name. Doesn't
seem like a Bart-like appellation, even though SLH tends to be seen as his
dog. Anyone know the derivation?

The Simpsons Christmas Special (AKA: Simpson's Roasting on a Open Fire) (7G08):
It's a not-so-merry Christmas for the Simpsons, when Mr. Burns decides to cut
the Christmas bonuses and Marge had to spend the Christmas savings to erase a
tattoo Bart thought would make a great Christmas present. In order to hide the
fact that he did not get the bonus, Homer takes a second job as a store Santa.
[Aired December 17, 1989] NOTES: Patty, and Selma are introduced, and Santa's
Little Helper joins the family. Ned and Todd Flanders, the Simpson's next door
neighbors, are introduced. This episode is available on video cassette.

Also:
Homer and Bart take the money he made as a dept store santa to the dog track,
bet on SLH, lose all the money. Owner of SLH is so mad, he chases SLH off,
Homer and Bart take SLH home as the present.

He was originally a racing dog (names for race-dogs and race-horses
usually take on unusual names such as this), first introduced in the
first epsiode to heir - the X-mas episode. Homer bets on him instead
of the sure-winner, thinking his name holds some special magic. He
ends up coming in dead last.

Thanks, Doc. So (not to labor the point, but I haven't seen the ep in
question), is SLH his "racing" name, given to him by his previous owner?
That would make sense, since weird names are often given to racehorses and
race, uh, dogs. Or did someone in OFF name him? Inquiring minds wannna
know. (Mind you, I don't know WHY I want to know. I just do.)

AHHH! That's what I wanted to know. Thank you!

I didn't realize that this Christmas episode was the first one to air.
What an odd choice for first episode! (Not that I've seen it--just seems
weird to start with a Christmas episode.)

That was in fact his racing name. Homer thought the name was kind of
an omen, being Christmas and all. He then bet all his money on SLH and
lost.

They call it santas little helper because in one of the first few
episodes, Homer and marge had saved up some money for Christmas and one
day they went to the mall with all their saved up monney and Bart
decided to get a tattoo and Marge saw him and told the guy to stop and
she asked how much it would cost to get it removed. It cost her the whole
savings jar so then Homer had too go out and get a job as a Santa Claus
to make up for all the lost money and all he made was 13 bucks so him
and Bart decided to go to the raceway and bet on a dog, hoping to get
100x their money.(knowing how dumb homer is, he bet on thje dog which
chances were 99to1.of course the dog lost and the owner gave the dog to
them and they called it Santas Little Helper cause this had all happened
on Christmas night.Hope that helps

Nope. The Simpsons did NOT name the dog Santas Little Helper. Bart told
Homer to bet on the dog because it was ALREADY named Santas Little Helper.
So, the original owner was the one who named him.

Bart and Homer did not name SLH. That was actually his name at the
racetrack

Because you're curious, eh, 'Alice' Kira? JK

SLH's racing owner named him, since the name was on the racing list, and was the
reason Homer bet on him. Recall that Homer had just been paid off for being a
dept store santa.

You're absolutely correct that racing dogs (and race horses) have unusual names.
It comes from the requirement that all racing animals have unique names in the
registry.

Incidently, that was episode 7G08, the 8th episode of the first year of 30
minute eps. I think that there were around 70 previous episodes in the Tracey
Ulman show, but those were all 1-2 minute clips.

Actually, the dog's name was Santa's Little Helper in the race--they were going
to bet on a different dog (who won the race, of course) on a tip, but they
thought the name of Santa's Little Helper was prophetic. So, they bet on him
instead, and he came in last, of course (if he even finished!).
