I said, last week, that "The Simpsons" hasn't made any "C" episodes in a while.
Well, they made two in a row. This one is, although funnier than last week's,
not quite as good. "The Mansion Family" was funny because it had MORE jokes
than "Faith Off"-- but not necessarily better jokes. It's like if you throw
10,000 darts at a dartboard blindfolded, you'll probably hit the bullseye more
times than than if you only throw 50 with your vision intact. "Faith Off" threw
50 darts in the right direction. It didn't have a very good aim, but it still
hit its target many times. "The Mansion Family" was a wreck. The jokes were so
off-the-wall, and many of them were not very funny. Many others were.
But generally speaking, this episode's good points equally countered its bad
points. The writing wasn't too hot; notice the awkward phrasing on the "Three
Stooges-germ-joke." It was shown well-enough by the model, but the doctor
didn't seem to say it right. The Grammy bit was funny, the Castro/Pope bit was
not. The embryos were funny, the pirates were not. The Tyson-Secretariat gag
was REALLY funny, the sauna scene blew. Britney Spears, as luscious as she may
be, should not have been there. The Mayo Clinic was a fine subplot. Marge and
Lisa should have had more screen time-- not cleaning, but perhaps trying to
have a good time doing things far less crazy than Homer. It's good to see Mr.
Burns, and Cornelius's documentary was pretty good. There's something funny
about a man with four parrots on his shoulder but that's the only good thing
that came from the non sequitur pirate device. Lenny kicking Homer in the balls
was not funny. It was funny when Milhouse did it to Bart, though, because of
the look on his face after Marge tells him to stop. The coast guard scene was
awkward, Furious George was funny. Furious George's fight wasn't. The ending
credits were funny, the couch gag was pretty good... meh, what's to tell. There
wasn't much substance here. It was just escapist stuff. Not bad escapist stuff,
but not really entertaining either. A solid (C).

For the record:
A rare venture into mediocrity whereby everything bad is balanced by something
equally good. I really wish they would stop bringing gratuitous guest stars
into the show, but just about all the scenes with Mr. Burns were great. The
Tyson-Secretariat poster was the funniest thing I've seen in some time. A solid
(C).

DYN--

(Correct me if I'm wrong on this!) The ONLY scene in The Simpson house was at
the very end?
The extinct animals (Tricerytops, et al.) hanging from Burns' wall?
Grampa was sitting next to Mrs. Krabapple? (The levels to which she will
sink!!)
My foot hurts?

Yeah, but probably one of the strangest previous episode references ever (4F22)....BTW,
why didn't they use Tatum instead of Tyson???

Homer: I mean an award that's worth winning!"
