IF YOU'RE WONDERING "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN FOR THE PAST THREE MONTHS":
I switched Internet services in April - only to discover in June
that there was a problem with its news service, and none of my posts
were being sent outside of the ISP's own news server (so only people
who were members of that service could see them). Recently, the ISP
gave me a discount to switch to SuperNews (a third-party news
service), so this should be getting out to more people.
SIMPSONS & EMMYS - A HISTORY
----------------------------
"The Simpsons" received four nominations for the 1997-98 Emmy Awards,
three of which involve music (well, there aren't THAT many categories
in which the show is eligible - for example, it can hardly win an
award for costuming or technical direction/camera/video):
Outstanding Animated Program (One Hour Or Less) - the series was
nominated for "Trash of the Titans"; the other nominees were:
* Cow & Chicken ("Free Inside", "Journey to the Center of Cow",
"I.R. Pixie Fairie")
* Dexter's Laboratory ("Dyno-Might", "LABretto" - note that the show's
last episode (the Anime one) was first shown
after May 31, so it wasn't eligible for this
year's awards)
* King of the Hill ("Texas City Twister")
* South Park ("Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride")
Note that both animated series and single-episode "specials" compete
in this category, although no specials were nominated this year
(it's probably the first time that's happened - then again, it's
probably the first time there have been five animated prime-time
series in a single season)
Outstanding Music Composition (Dramatic Underscore) for a Series (in
other words, "best background music") - Alf Clausen, nominated for
"Treehouse of Horror VII" (other nominees: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer",
"Roar", "Stargate SG-1", and "The X-Files")
Outstanding Music Direction - Alf Clausen, nominated for "All Singing,
All Dancing" (other nominees: the Academy Awards, Michael Crawford In
Concert, Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella", and Star Trek: Deep
Space Nine)
Outstanding Music And Lyrics (in other words, "Best Song") - Alf
Clausen and Ken Keeler, nominated for "You're Checkin' In (A Musical
Tribute To The Betty Ford Center)" from "The City of New York vs.
Homer Simpson" (other nominees: "The Closer", HBO's "Mr. Show with Bob
and David", amd two nominations for "Xena: Warrior Princess")
Music nominations were determined by screening panels of members of
the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' "musicians branch";
the Animated Program nominations were determined by votes of the
"animation branch". The awards themselves will be determined by
special judging panels from the music/animation branches, and will be
announced August 29 at the "Emmy Creative Arts Awards", which will
be simulcast on the Internet (www.emmys.org); the winners will
probably be listed on the "main" TV ceremony on September 13.
There are two animation awards that did not have nominations:
Voiceover Performance and Individual Achievement in Animation. In
both cases, all entries submitted for the award are judged on their
own merits by a panel of Animation branch members (and, for the
voiceover award, Acting branch members with voiceover experience).
It is possible for more than one, or no, awards to be given out
in these categories.
For those of you who don't know the story, the Voiceover award was
created in 1992, supposedly as a "consolation prize" for "The
Simpsons" when it was declared ineligible for the Outstanding Comedy
Series award.

Now that the Emmy Awards are on for four hours, why don't they move
the Animated Program award to the TV broadcast?
> 1990 The Simpsons
> 1991 The Simpsons
> 1992 A Claymation Easter (CBS)
> 1993* Batman: The Series (FOX?)
Batman: The Animated Series was brought to primetime on Fox for one
year in 1992. Apparently it was pulled because of low ratings (much like with
"Pinky and the Brain"'s primetime installment on WB from 1995-1996.)
> 1994* The Roman City (PBS)
> 1995 The Simpsons
> 1996 Pinky & The Brain Christmas Special (WB)
> 1997 The Simpsons
Simpsons is almost like the "Cheers" or "Frasier" of animation,
winning big categories 4 non-consecutive times. Although Frasier won
Outstanding Comedy Series four years in a row, and if it wins this year, it
will be the first series in history to have five consecutive wins. While
that'd be nice, I personally don't think it deserves a fifth win as much as it
did the past four years. But that's neither here nor there...

Thanks for this little history every year. It's nice to know.

This year is a special exception because they want time to do some
retrospective material (which I'll probably be taping. I love nostalgia.)
And also it's the first time NBC's had the awards in a very long time.

With the huge number of animated series airing in eligible time periods
(with more on the way), it is time for the academy to divide this category
between series and specials, with the series award honoring the entire
season of episodes, instead of just one episode. There can be a different
award to honor writing and directing of individual episodes (much like the
comedy and drama categories).
The awards themselves will be determined by
> special judging panels from the music/animation branches, and will be

Just a thought, but there has to be at least one cable network out there
who would be interested in airing the technical awards. Granted, there
probably wouldn't be much interest in seeing who wins Outstanding
Hairstyling in a Movie or Mini-Series, but the academy could get some extra
cash, the network would get a cheap, original night of programming, and we
would get to see what all the behind the scenes staff people at OFF look
like (maybe).

It is also time to make Voiceover a regular category, with five nominees.
Better yet, split it in two: Voiceover Work by a Male, and Voiceover Work
by a Female.

Oh, good. I was wondering how "Inspector Gadget Saves Christmas" got a
nomination in 1993, while OFF didn't.

He won't. There is no voiceover nominations for this year (I wouldn't
be surprised if that little pity, consolation "Everybody Gets a Trophy"
category invented almost exclusively for "The Simpsons" hasn't been expunged
altogether), and since Phil is dead, he won't be doing any more voice work,
unless he just barely makes it for next year's Emmys for his work on AABF01
(Treehouse of Horror IX).
I dont understand, how come in 93 and 94 the Simpsons were eligible as a
comedy series, but before and after those years, they werent? I say The
Simpsons should always be nomintaed as a comedy. Could you explain to me why
only in 93 and 94 they were nominated as a comedy series, and which eps in 93
and 94 were they nominated for? Take care. Good-day.
Thanks.

Before 1993, "The Simpsons" were ineligible for any of the comedy series
awards because it was animated. The rules were read that only live action
series were eligible for the comedy awards. In 1993, the rules were
changed so that animated series (i.e. "The Simpsons") would be eligible for
the comedy awards, but if they entered in that catagory, the show would be
ineligible for the animation awards. Both years, OFF tried their luck in
the comedy catagory, but failed to pick up any nominations either year. In
1995, the producers moved the show back into the animated catagory, and the
series has been nominated every year there.
