I've been told that there was an episode where Homer joins the Masons (or
some other fraternal order). I missed the first several Simpson seasons,
and I'd appreciate a verification as to whether any such episode existed.
I'd also appreciate it if anyone can remember other Masonic references or
cameo appearances. For example, I remember one time when Bart is en route
to a comic book convention, a bunch of Shriners are leaving the hall...but
that's the only reference I can think of.
Thanks, Maureen

What about the episode where Homer joins the exclusive Stonecutters
(there's a funny song in the episode too).

Homer joined the Stonecutters, a secret society which ruled
Springfield, in [2F09], "Homer the Great". Much of the Stonecutters'
arcana resembled that of the Freemasons.

Also, Mr. Burns sees the germs on Smithers's face say "Freemasons run
the country." when he goes mad, a la Howard Hughes, in [1F08]
"$pringfield".

Homer was never a Freemason; but there was a distinct Freemason parody in
the episode where Homer joins the "Stonecutters".

Grandpa Simpson is a freemason though. He's also a shriner, a communist,
the president of the gay and lesbian alliance for some reason...

There is a passing reference to Freemasons in the episode in which
Burns builds a casino. As the days and weeks go by, Burns becomes
more and more obsessed and paranoid as he moniters his (lucrative)
investment. At one point he begins obsessing about "filthy germs" -
he looks at Smithers and imagines his face covered with little beasties,
who chant: "Freemasons are running the country!"
(The whole sequence of Burns' deepening madness is one of the more
hilarous bits of Simpsons of all time..."I said HOP IN!")

Sort of a reference to the long tradition of conspiracy theories which
orbit around Freemasonry, a la the "Illuminatus" trilogy, Umberto Eco, etc.
etc. etc.

BTW, the episode you've heard about stars Patrick Stewart as the leader
of the Stonecutters, which is the most memorable thing about it, IMO.

Homer _was_ a member of the Stonecutters ( a spoof of the Masons, et. al.)
in an earlier episode. Hmm. you've probably missed some of the best shows.
Keep watching!

Burns was also parodying the unseemly downfall of Howard Hughes.

In the episode when Mr. Burns opens a casino in Springfield and becomes
a paranoid recluse with long fingernails a la Howard Hughes, he looks at
something (I forget what) and sees millions of tiny germs that shout out
to him "Freemasons rule the country" or something to that effect.

Anybody remember that song? All I remember about it was that it was
about how everyone important was a Stonecutter, and they mentioned
something about Steve Gutenberg.

BTW, that episode was one of my favorites. The whole scene where Homer
was using the Stonecutters' charter as a napkin was hilarious. THe
whole, "No Simpsons Club" gag was great, too (It says SimpsonS, we're
allowed to have one!)

OK, here goes. Thanks to the person who posted the .wav files -
couldn't
have done it without you.

Stonecutter Song Lyrics

________________

Who controls the British Pound?
Who keeps the Metric System down?

We do. We do.

Who leaves Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?

We do. We do.

Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Gutenberg a star?

We do. We do.

Who robs Kingfish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscar night?

We do. We do.

(Finale)

Thank you.

Yeah, Homer joined the Stonecutters in an episode where Patrick Stewart played
"#1"-(the chapter president). Homer had to drag a boulder for destroying the
"sacred parchment", but when they found the birthmark of the hammer they removed
that boulder and replaced it with the "Stone of Triumph"(I think...), which
turned out to be a boulder of about the same size. re: the funny song-- I can
e-mail the lyrics to it if anyone is interested. Just e-mail me --
