Let the debate begin!

I'm sure we've all notice how Milhouse Van Houten looks like both his
mom and dad, but has anybody else besides me notice that Mr. and Mrs.
Van Houten themselves look ALOT like EACH OTHER?!

I'm not saying the "I" word, but......

Please, PLEASE tell me you're not serious. They just look alike! Deal
with it. If this becomes a "Is Smithers Gay?" or "Where is Springfield?"
type topic, I'll scream!

But what about the color of their hair and eyes, nose, the shape of
their eyebrows and forehead Burns99? Too much similarily to be a fluke.

If they are related in someway, they must have been separated at birth.
In one episode Milhouse's father curses Shellbeville, only to have Mil's
mom say , I'm from Shellbeville....His reply...And it just tears me up
inside.

Parents of many of the kids on Simpsons look like the kids themselves.
See Kent Brockman and his daughter on the episode about Malibu Stacy, or
the parents of the twin girls in Bart's class, who are shown in Mo's
Tavern when he converts it into a family restaurant. The resemblance is a
joke about heredity.

They look alike for the same reason that Homer and Krusty look exactly
alike. THE REASON IS THAT........
It is a FUCKING CARTOON.

Isn't it an established fact that people look for a partner who looks
similiar to themselves? Perhaps hereditary traits work backwards in
Springfield, parents inherit their Children's genes :=)

Actually...from the episode where Shelbyvill kids steal the lemon tree,
the history of the foundation of both towns is divulged. People from
Shelbyville wanted to marry their cousins, and the people of Springfield
did not. Then later in that episode it is revealed that Milhouse's
parents are from Shelbyville.

I'd put it down to the same reason Minnie Mouse looks an awful lot like
Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck looks an awful lot like Daisy Duck.

And that female rabbit in Space Jam is hardly a million miles away from how
Bugs looked back when he was slapping on the lipstick and false eyelashes to
confuse Elmer Fudd.

Clearly most cartoon characters are raving narcisists, whose idea of
physical perfection is someone who resembles themselves as closely as
possible.

Except for Ren and Stimpy.

Guys, guys, there is a much simpler answer. Milhouse's mom is from
Shelbyville, which was founded by people who wanted to marry their
cousins. I think it can therefore be implied that Mr. and Mrs. Van
Houten are actually cousins, which is why they look so much alike.

Because it's good visual shorthand, that's why. Just by looking at
Kirk, LuAnn, and Milhouse Van Houten, you can instantly see that they
are supposed to be related. It's also a funny visual joke, since they
all have that huge schnoz and those thick glasses.

Other responders to this thread have mentioned the Shelbyville/cousin-
marrying connection. That's certainly a plausible explanation, but I
think the producers were just trying to come up with a good
justification of a fairly common animation technique.

If this is true, doesn't this mean that Luanne's father is also Kirk's uncle?
According to "A Milhouse Divided":

Luanne: Okay, Kirk, I'll tell a story. It's about a man whose father-
in-law gave him a sweet job as manager of a cracker factory.

Later in the episode, Kirk gets fired, presumably by his father-in-law/uncle.
I'm not sure that it actually proves anything, but it is interesting, I guess.
