To avoid offending the real springfield (there are several) this is never
revealed. AFAIK

There are *many* town, cities, named Springfield.
Only problem is, you'll never find out which one the writers are
referring to.
In one episode, they were just about ready to point in out when Bart
blocked it totally! Smart move! Smart writing, as usual!

You're missing the point. Yes, there are *many* US towns named
"Springfield," but none of these is the Springfield in which OFF lives.
The Simpsons Springfield is, obviously, a fictional town; the writers are
not "referring" to any existing Springfield.
Now, let there be no more said about Where Is Springfield.

The fun is finding out how many states can possibly have the 'real'
Springfield, and which ones have been eliminated.

Actually, NT is an old reference to Norther Territory which was used before
Alaska was a state. Some people have said that it stands for North Tacoma
(I'm not sure why) and then there are the old die-hards who insist that
Springfield is in Bonerland (of which I'm one) .......hehehe.......
BTW....Hesky, I've only got 3 episodes left to put on your tape and then
it'll be in the mail to ya!!!

By that line of reasoning, Springfield must be in India because Apu speaks with an
Indian acccent!

I have one main reason for this. Matt Groening grew up in Eugene WA and named
many of the other characters after streets of the town. I just hope Millhouse

The TV Station is also KBBL, and there is a TV station in PA that
starts w/a "K".
OK...I'm only going to go over this one more time...
As a former major in broadcasting, I can tell you that the system that
determines a radio or TV station's call letters in the U.S. was
established by the Radio Act of 1927. This was an act of Congress that,
among other things, determined that all stations east of the Mississippi
would have "W" as the first call letter, and stations west of the
Mississippi would have "K" as the first call letter. This act also
established that all stations would have four call letters in their
names.
However [deep breath], these rules did not apply to stations already in
existence at the time at which the act took effect; hence the existence
of some Pennsylvania stations with "K" as their first letter, and some
Iowa and North Dakota stations with "W", as well as 3-letter stations
such as WGN in Chicago, WOR in New York City, et al.
Of course, the most important thing to remember is...Springfield is
FICTIONAL! [OK, who said "duh"? Besides MutantMan, that is...]

One of my friends said that the show takes place in Springfield because
there is a Springfield in every state in the US.
Here we go again...Springfield in the Simpsons is "supposed" to be
representative of an average American city, and Springfield IS one of the
most common names, but I don't think there's a Springfield in every state
in the US. Just ask Alaska and Hawaii...the freak states (I could be
wrong on this). Plus, Matt Groening is from Springfield , Oregon and he's
been quoted as saying that he based much of the show on his own childhood.

Most, but nowhere close to "virtually all" states. The U. S. Geographic
Service Names Information Server at
http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html lists 64 "populated places"
named Springfield, but (for example) there are four in Alabama and ten in
Georgia. States without Springfields include not only Alaska and Hawaii, but
also Wyoming, North Dakota, Delaware, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah,
Washington, Nevada, Kansas, Rhode Island, Connecticut; maybe more (these are
all I counted until I gave up.) Mississippi has one, but it's "historical"
which means it's not called that any more; anyway, even if you count
Mississippi's Springfield, there are at least fourteen states without
Springfields; that's 28%.

Better than the 6 or 7 that the original poster found in an atlas. ;)
I counted once when I was bored and there happened to be a US atlas in the
car......there are 19 states that have a Springfield in them. Just
FYI.......
You know what was even worse? There were OVER 30 different "Silver Lake"
references (not always town names, but just names of lakes even)
For this reason, I think that OFF should have an episode where they go on
vacation to "Silver Lake" so that we can have even MORE useless threads
about "Where is Springfield.........or Silver Lake?"
"Now THAT's Interesting!!!"
