As much as I love the Simpsons, I don't get to watch it as often as
I'd like. Therefore, I have a couple of questions that may seem
ridiculous to you folks. Take pity on the deprived.

First, I have always assumed that Itchy is the mouse and Scratchy is
the cat, but a friend of mine asked me how I can be sure and I had to
say I don't know. Even the recent list of characters posted here was
of no help.

Second, has the cat ever gotten the mouse back?

Thanks,
Reggie

Oh, all right. Look at that those puppy-dog eyes...

Just make sure you check out the Simpsons Archive (http://www.snpp.com)
sometime. It's full of neat information a non-expert on the Simpsons may
not know.

I always wondered why this was in the FAQ...

From the alt.tv.simpsons LISA:

Which one's Itchy and which one's Scratchy?

As Lisa and Bart explained to Herb Powell:

Lisa: "The mouse's name is Itchy, and the cat's name is Scratchy."
Bart: "They hate each other."
Lisa: "And they're not shy about expressing it."

Your friend, I'm sorry to say, is an idiot. I mean, an itch is a pain to
the one who scratches, and Itchy is a pain to Scratchy, ain't he?

> Second, has the cat ever gotten the mouse back?

He did once. In an episode in which Homer goes to college and befriends
some nerds, Bart and Lisa see the beginning of an episode in which
"Scratchy _finally_ gets Itchy." The cat has Itchy right where he wants
him (I won't go into the details), when the nerds unplug the TV. By the
time they realize what they've done, the cartoon is over, leaving a major
explosion. Krusty said they'd never show it again in a million years.

Of course, we don't know what _really_ happened...

In the episode where Homer wouldn't let Bart see the IS movie, at the end,
Homer asks who the mouse is, Bart replies that it's Itchy, and Homer says,
"Itchy's a jerk."
Bart says, "Yeah."

You are correct in your assumption. Itchy is the mouse, Scratchy the
cat.

Old Homer: Which one's the mouse?
Old Bart: Itchy.
Old Homer: Itchy's a jerk.
Old Bart: Yeah.

Once, in [1F02], "Homer Goes to College". We don't get to see
what happens though. See http://www.snpp.com/episodes/1F02.html
for more information.

I&S don't always fight. Occasionally they'll team up against a third
party, for example in [7F09], "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge".
