*** WHAT HAPPENS TO THE "NATIONAL SYNDICATION RUN"? ***
Up until now, there was one (or, for a while two) episodes each weekday
that the syndicators made available "for free" - provided that the
stations show the commercials that came with them (rather than show
commercials that the advertisers paid the stations themselves for the
time). If a station wanted to show more than one episode per day, it
had to pay a fee to the syndicators, but the station could show
whatever episodes it wanted.
Beginning September 10, there will be no more "nationally syndicated"
episodes. Any station that wants to show syndicated episodes at all
will pay fees, but each station can show whatever episodes it wants in
whatever order it wants.
If you're lucky, stations will start showing episodes from the
beginning and in original order (although I wouldn't be surprised if
some stations pull out the Halloween and Christmas episodes and show
them only in October and December). However, if you're not lucky,
there's a chance your local station's programmers are thinking "hmmm,
do we show episodes of 'The Simpsons', half of which are years old and
we've probably run them into the ground already, and we have to pay
for them, or do we show free episodes of '3rd Rock from the Sun' that
haven't been shown anywhere in years?"
Oh, and do NOT ask me what episodes your local station will be
showing. I can't maintain a separate list for every station in the
USA. Try tvquest.com, clicktv.com, or tvguide.com.
