I think he wanted to give them a "average" joe-schmoe type name. So
"Simpletons = Simpsons" ? Something like that.
"Bees are on the what now?"
< Homer J. Simpson
"If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go
because, man, they're gone."
< A Deep Thought by Jack Handey
I'm not sure where I read this, it might have been in an interview or
something, but the name "Simpson" was chosen because it means "son of a
simpleton."

Mister Know-It-All
Homer Simpson was a character played by Donald Sutherland in the movie
"The Day of the Locust", which in turn was based on a novel by Nathaniel West.

I haven't read the book, but scanning some web sites dedicate to the
works of Upton Sinclair, the lead character in "The Jungle" was a
fellow named Jurgis Rudkus.
Matt Groening named the head of the Simpson clan after his own father,
Homer. The names of the other Simpson members are also named after
Matt's own family, with the exception of Bart, who is an anagram for
Brat.
BTW the FAQ pretty much covers all this. :-)
As for Bartstew's question:

The earliest mention of a possible answer that I could find comes from
Steve Stelter, who, in 1992, reported that Groening stated in an
interview that he choose the name "Simpson" because it meant "son of
a simp."

Apu friend me good.
No we don't!! Besides, we all know that Springfield is located in Hawaii-
we've already established that.
Looks like it's time for more "Where is Springfield?" and "Is Smithers Gay?"
threads. ;-)

You mean Smithers is gay?!
Its right next to Shelbyville and down the hiway from Capital City. Duh.
Something about two ATSer's arguing over the homosexuality of an animated
fourth-grader... I dunno... seems kinda gay.
<CBG-STYLE SARCASM>Oh, I never would have figured that out. I bow down to you,
oh brilliant one.</CBG-STYLE SARCASM>
Also, someone figured out that "Waylon Smithers" is an anagram of "Wants Him
Sorely".
On a somewhat unrelated topic, I'd bet 40,000 dollars that Martin Prince is
gay.
How about "Homer Goobyhooby"?
Newspaper headline: "Kids make nutritious snacks."
Remove "bination" to reply.
Well, Matt always said they're supposed to be the *typical* American
family. Plus Simpson sounds sleazy when being spoke about in a bad
way, plus imagine the opening theme saying ``the Dograhlones!'' :-)
All bets are on it's him and Nelson, who just keeps up the bully
attitude as a cover ^^

Groening chose the name Simpson because its literal meaning is "son of a
simpleton"
