Does anybody know which of the writers, or possibly Groening himself, is
into psychedelic drugs? There are several blatant references to LSD or
shrooms in many episodes. Lisa drinking the water at Duff Gardens and
then tripping all over the park, for instance. When Homer questions her
she says, "Can't talk. Coming down." There's also one where she has a
trip inspired by Yellow Submarine, although I can't recall the episode.
Then there's El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer which is the most thinly
veiled reference. The entire episode is Homer using a psychedelic drug
(the chili) to find truths about himself. So I'm just curious if anybody
knows who is behind these? One of them must have taken a lot of trips
back in their college days (or maybe still).

What do you think? Isn't it obvious? While I would never claim that any
one who works for the show is into the stuff, clearly they are well
aware of that aspect of life. This is Hollywood, after all. For
example, here is a story from the LATimes of Wednesday, 17 Nov:
Onetime Superagent, Drug Abuser Is Found Hanged
Tragedy: Ovitz protege Jay Moloney, who had struggled
with cocaine, apparently committed suicide.
Of course it's obvious, that's why asked if anybody knows which of the
writers is the inspiration behind it.
I don't think any of the writers necessarily use psychotropic substances,
because these references aren't taking themselves seriously enough. The
chile episode mocks drug culture--isn't it quite absurd for a grown man
to find enlightenment by eating a batch of spicy chili?
Drugs are just another part of contemporary culture, and that is what
inspires these writers.

Well my theory is that they wouldn't be allowed to air an episode where
homer drops acid, or uses any other drug. They have to use metaphors.
