OOPS: That wasn't Kathleen Turner as the voice of the doll after all...

REVIEW: (B+) This one had a number of noteable moments, although the opening
wasn't that good (you could see Grampa yelling to bring on Matlock the minute
Dr. Hibbert started talking a mile away); at least they didn't cop out with
an "everybody buys the Lisa Lionheart doll and the moral of the story is that
women CAN do anything even in the face of the male-domineered society even
on a show where the vast majority of producers, writers, and directors are
men".

The episode ran 21:32 (timed from the start of the first scene to the "Dan
Castellaneta" credit, and not including commercials); was this episode
made shorter because of Fox's beach promotion? (Then again, how could they
have known that this episode would be shown on this date, especially since
the earthquake probably pushed the schedule back one week?)

NOTES FOR THE LIST-KEEPING TYPES
Episode number: 1F12
Written by Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein
Directed by Jeffrey Lynch
Blackboard: none
Couch: family gets crushed by "Monty Python's Flying Circus" foot (first
used in 1F02)
Overseas Animation: Anivision, J.C. Park
Special Guest Voice: Kathleen Turner
Also Starring: Pamela Hayden, Maggie Roswell

DYNs/Freeze Frame/Other Stuff
-----------------------------
1. The name "Andy Griffith" is never used - just "Matlock".

2. The telegram Lisa reads is dated October 11, sometime between 6 and 7 PM.

3. Hopefully, there's a coin store at the mall, as mint condition 1917
silver dollars are worth much more (at the very least, for the silver
content alone) than $1 each.

4. Stores at the mall (all on the second floor) seen as they headed to
Kidstown USA: One Size Fits All Lingerie, Leftorium, House of No
Refunds, Organ _____, Just Vinn____ (the organ one wasn't clear; the
last one went off the side of the screen).

5. There's no break in Grampa's story between the time they're in the car
and the time they're in the mall. (Maybe he repeated it...)

6. The black keys on the keyboard don't correspond to s atandard keyboard
at first (there are three white keys between the sets of black keys),
but they do when Homer starts "Rock Around the Clock" - during which,
the notes do not correspond to where he's stepping.

7. On the drive home, not only is nobody wearing seat belts, but Marge
has Maggie in her lap, which can be quite dangerous even if Marge is
wearing a seat belt.

8. Why is Homer drinking a Buzz Cola instead of a Duff Beer?

9. "Millions of girls will grow up thinking that this is the right way
to act - that they can never be anything more than vacuous ninnies
whose only goal is to look pretty, land a rich husband, and spend all
day on the phone with their equally vacuous friends talking about how
damn terrific it is to look pretty and have a rich husband!" During
Lisa's tirade, the Malibu Stacy Doll's hair got more and more mussed
with each remark. (And isn't it supposed to say things like that?
Why do you think it's called a MALIBU Stacy Doll?)

10. Celeste's doll says "My Spidey-sense is tingling; anybody call for a
webslinger?" - but does Spider-man actually say "Spidey-sense"? (I
thought he always called it "spider sense".)

11. Lisa's friends, including Janey, have three lashes on each eyelid,
instead of four like Lisa.

12. Lisa once threw red paint at Keebler executives, made the family march
in a Gay Rights parade, and won't let Homer watch FOX because it owns
chemical weapons plants in Syria? As Marge would say, "mmmmmmmm...."

13. One of Smithers' dolls is carrying a rifle (it's to the right as he
appears in close-up); also, he's wearing his SNPP badge in the film.
Speaking of Smithers, he lives in Apt. 19 of his building and
recognizes Lisa at first sight, albeit as "Homer Simpson's daughter".

14. Stacy (the woman, not the doll) was forced out in 1974 for funneling
profits to the Viet Cong (i.e. what was then North Vietnamese troops).

15. The "teenager's" last name is Peterson - and now there's another one
with a slightly different voice (with the crate of Talking Malibu
Stacy Dolls).

16. Lisa Lionheart has the wisdom of author Gertrude Stein, the wit of
"Cathy" cartoonist Cathy uisewite, the tenacity of Nina Totenberg
(pardon me for asking, but "who?"), the common sense of women's rights
crusader Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and the "down-to-earth good looks" of
Eleanor Roosevelt". (I might have chosen "Sylvia" cartoonist Nicole
Hollander over Guisewite, and Rosa Parks over Totenberg.)

17. Things the Talking Malibu Stacy Doll says:
I wish they taught shopping in school
Let's bake some cookies for the boys
Don't ask me; I'm just a girl <giggle> <giggle>
Now let's forget our troubles with a big bowl of strawberry ice cream
Shaking too much gives you wrinkles
My name is Stacy, but you can call me <two-note wolf whistle>

18. There already is a Talking Krusty Doll - see "The Crepes of Wrath" and
"A Streetcar Named Marge" ("Hey, kids! I'm flame retardant!").

19. Talking Malibu Stacy has a "pull-string" - hasn't technology reached
the point where they can do better than that?

20. When Homer plays the Simpson theme at the end, the others who step on
the keyboard light up keys but don't play any notes.

MAGGIE ALERT
21. Maggie is wearing an orange coat of some sort (it appears to have a
hood as well, but it's not over her head) when they're about to go
to the mall, but she's not wearing it in the car or at the mall.

22. When Maggie spells out "MAGGIE SIMPSON" with the Etch-A-Sketch, the
"pen" movement doesn't correspond to her somewhat random knob-turning.
(One knob controls horizontal motion, the other vertical.)

23. This is the first time Maggie uses a fork, but whatever it is she's
eating looks like something that wouldn't stick to a fork.

24. During Grampa's story, Homer, Marge, and Maggie have their eyes
half-closed, while Bart and Lisa aren't bored. (In the mall, Lisa
starts to look bored.)

25. Maggie reaches out for both the silver dollars and the Lisa Lionheart
dolls.

nowhere to be seen, but the second time they show the front seat, there's
Maggie!?!

Hear hear! I'm male and _I_ find that strip incredibly sexist and demeaning
to women. I don't think there's a single positive portrayal of women in it.
All the female characters are utterly lacking in self-control, obsessive about
appearance, have this pathetic need to be in some kind of romantic relationship
even if it's with a pinhead, and are only marginally able to deal with life
in the twentieth century. As a commentary on women's issues, it's pretty sad,
since all of the women in it are pathetic wastes of ink. The strip has no
redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I don't know about what the doll said, but Spider-Man, himself, says
"spider sense".

Glad to see Ned is still in business...

It was very long....IMHO, the joke worked better this way, since we also got
the changing scenery to look at instead of just a headshot of Abe droning on
and on. I think they learned something from the failure of the rake scene; I
can't think of any real timing problems since then.

Homer's clumsier than you think.

It eases the pain.

You're right, it should have been Spider-sense. The media pranksters must
have been clueless.

>11. Lisa's friends, including Janey, have three lashes on each eyelid,

That's because Lisa is smarter.

>14. Stacy (the woman, not the doll) was forced out in 1974 for funneling

Jane Fonda reference? Anyone think the doll looked like Barbarella?
Of course, the woman in the mansion should have had her own exercise studio and
not been drinking alcohol...

Totenberg is the NPR reporter who scooped the Anita Hill story and
stonewalled the Congressional committee that was more interested in finding the
whistleblower who leaked the story than in the merits of the case.
I would have chosen Susan Sontag or Hannah Arendt over Stein, and Susan
Sarandon over Roosevelt (probably this was part of the joke, but I don't think
Eleanor was known for down-to-earth good looks).

it's, "THINKING too much gives you wrinkles".

Yeah, but pull-strings are more fun!

Hmm... to me it sounded more like "thinking", which makes more
sense as a sexist remark.

Well my talking Bart has a pull string, as does my talking Ren (I have no
Stimpy {SOB!}), so I guess, considering the quality (or lack thereof) of
products nowadays , that this is still the cheapest way to produce them. :o)

BTW Why does my talking Bart say "Kids in TV land you're being duped". It's
hardly a regular quote, judging from my collector cards he said it in one of
the Tracey Ullman episodes (?)
