1) Is Gordie Howe a real NHL star from 1950? Does he exist in real life?
His picture and name appeared in Bart the Lover.
2) What were the first names of USA's 29th, 30th and 31th presidents?
Their pictures appeared on the wall along with Woodrow Wilson.
(The last names were Harding, Coolidge and Hoover.)
3) What's the joke in this:
Ixnay on the Oojay!
-- Ustykray the Ownklay, ``The Front''
Is it a reference to something? ``I don't get it.'' [9F21]

It's called "Pig Latin" in English. To say a word in Pig Latin, you
take the initial consonant, move it to the end, and at "ay" to it. If
it begins with a vowel, you just add "ay" to the end.
So the above can be translated from Pig Latin to English as "Nix on the
Jew!" -- Krusty the Klown. Krusty didn't want anyone knowing he was
Jewish, and he also didn't want anyone understanding what he was
objecting to, so he spoke in Pig Latin to obfuscate it.

To expand further, it's meant to confuse. That's why Homer's attempt
later was *so* laugh-able.
Marge: And you're a Nuclear Technician?
Homer: Marge! Ixnay on the uclear-technician-nay!
(I *think* I got that right, he might have scrambled both words.) And
that's also why his next line is so great!
Marge: What did you say?
Homer: I don't know! I flunked Latin, too!

Yes, he's real. You're lucky I know this; I ignore sports to the extent
possible, but Howe's name popped up in a crossword I did yesterday. Funny how
this happens, useful information just happening to come along when you need
it...

Warren, Calvin and Herbert, respectively. Warren Harding is generally
regarded as the worst president in US history, and conspiracy theorists
speculate that he may have been poisoned by his wife while in office. Silent
Cal Coolidge is most famous for hardly ever talking. "Hey Cal, my friends just
bet me I couldn't get you to say three words!" "You lose." Hoover is credited
with causing the great depression; thus, homeless people built clusters of
shacks called "Hoovervilles", and Presidential candidate Tom Harkin taunted
Bush's domestic ineptitude by calling him "George Herbert Hoover Bush."

Krusty's guest has just said something about kosher food. Krusty, who is
notorious for not keeping kosher, doesn't think it's funny, and would prefer
that Jewish references be kept off his show. "Ixnay on the Oojay" is pig latin
for "Nix on the Jew(ish jokes)", ie don't make Jewish refs.
More than you wanted to know, I'm sure

Juha> I have some questions. The first two are about my character list.
Juha> 1) Is Gordie Howe a real NHL star from 1950? Does he exist in
Juha> real life? His picture and name appeared in Bart the Lover.
Gordie Howe had one of the longest careers in *any* professional
sport. He played on the same team as at least one of his sons, when
he was well over 50. Not surprisingly, he holds the NHL record for
most goals in a career. He won the MVP in 1952, 53, 57, 58, 60, and
63, and led the league in scoring 1951-54, 1957, and 1963. Thus, he
was indeed playing in 1950-51, and would have been considered a star
at the time.

It's in Pig Latin, obviously. I forgot what was the preceding line
exactly, but I did remember that it had to do with a comment on Krusty's
Jewish background, and Krusty, feeling awkward, not wanting to reveal his
ethnicity, basically said (in Pig Latin,) "Nix <strike> that statement on the Jew thing" or "Ixnay on the Ewjay!"
(Yes, yes, I know, Krusty introduced his father, Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky on the
"Like Father, Like Clown" episode, but that was an inspired moment...other-
wise, Krusty feels very reluctant to talk about his heritage.)

Gordie Howie was THE star from 1950, and 1960, and 1970. He is the second
highest scoring player in NHL history and the only player to lace up the
skates in four different decades. He is alive and well.

William Harding (?), Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover
