In Team Homer (Pin Pals bowling team), Homer gets marge to say he might
win the bowling league. When she says that, he gets excited, gives a
Woo-hoo, marches to his dresser and grabs - amazingly - an Oscar, which is
shown in close up. "Won't be needing this anymore," he says. then he
marches into the bathroom and the sound of one, then two, then three
flushes on the toilet is heard.
"Marge," he then says, "Somebody broke the toilet."
its a small, disconnected gag, but, pound for pound, might be one of the
best bolt-from-the-blue jokes in series history. In my mind, its a moment
that neatly encapsulates the whimsy that made seasons 6 and 7 the show's
zenith (and which has been absent since).
THE ERROR: in the sydnicated version I saw, the close up shows that the
Oscar was Don Ameche's, whose name Homer has crudely crossed out to scrawl
Homer Simpson.
I stopped the tape - there's no doubt it says Don Ameche.
The book, in Stuff You May Have Missed, refers to the scene but says it
was Dr. Haing S. Ngor's Oscar - the vietnamese actor from the Killing
Fields (in both cases, its Supporting Actor - Ameche won, i think, for
Cocoon).
REVIEW Of Tide:
Better than Little Wiggy, which I found to be a 30-minute painful set up
to a punchline that never came (I'm aware that opinion is not shared on
this group). Also better than other Season 9 disasters like the
Movementarians, Lord of the Flies, etc.
But only a little better.
Mostly, this episode - like those above - made up a marketable but tired
premise (satire of Crimson Tide? we asked for this?) and threw as many
characters at it as possible. They didn't even bother getting a good
voice for the drill sargeant.
When in doubt, show moe scowling.
best example: why the Village People? The people who took animal abuse
and made See My Vest couldn't write a better musical number?
SMALL RANT
The only good episode I've seen this season (and it was a Top Ten ever, I
think) was Reality Bites. Consider it's premise: Moe needs a date. From
that simple, but totally accessible premise (who DOESN'T need a date?)
spilled out a show full of off-kilter brilliance (Homer screws up auto
theft - "Bring me your best food stuffed with your second best" - Hail to
the Chimp - the Monkees and George Thorogood soundtrack).
The best episodes are like that. simple and universal: Lisa wants to be
popular. Homer becomes Krusty (sort of). A fued with Shelbyville. The
kids play hockey.
Homer joins the Navy? maybe.
Homer takes command of a sub and almost starts a war? how? Why? Huh?
Simplify.

You're both right.
Haing S. Ngor was killed before the syndicated version came out, and if
Homer had his Oscar, that--well--wouldn't look good. So it was changed to
Mr. Ameche.

This is in the LISA, you know...
The original episode did say Haing S Ngor, but it was changed for syndication,
because Ngor was assasinated a few years ago.

that should be Dumbell Indemnity, not Reality Bites.
