Sounded a hell of a lot like Dustin to me. Especially when he did
the asides during the "Singing Dork" scene.

It had to be him! I "got" the voice about 30 seconds before the
"graduate" reference and was stunned when the name didn't appear at
the end. Could it have been an imitation? Is he too good, or shy,
or whatever to be credited with a cartoon voice? How come the TV
listings didn't mention him, or even that there was a "cameo" voice
in the show?

"Your're trying to seduce me Mrs. Krubaple"
Along with a shot through her leg identical to the one from the cover of
The Graduate. Also, the sub's voice sounded remarkably liking Dustin
Hoffman when he said this line. It could be because they were trying to
strengthen the referrence, or it could've actually been Hoffman.
The scene at the end with Lisa chasing the train was from a movie. I
don't remember the name, though. Any guesses?

During last night's episode ("Lisa's Substitute"), my friend and fellow
Simpson-holic thought he recognized Dustin Hoffman's voice, especially
after the "Graduate" scene! We were both disappointed when the credits
read "Sam Etic"...Anyway, I am now convinced that it WAS Dustin after
seeing the messages from those of you who felt the same. (I'm calling
my friend after I post this--it'll make his day!)

Well, our local FOX affiliate promoted the show with the teaser, "guess,
what oscar winner is appearing on the simpsons this week..." followed by
the "Mrs. Krabapple, you're trying to seduce me" scene (ala The Graduate)
The scene with Lisa running alongside the train window is also similar
to the scene in The Graduate, where Dustin is chasing Mrs. Robinsons
daughter while she's sitting on the bus.
Anyone notice any other scenes from Dustin's movies?
Homer can be annoying -- as in the museum admission... especially since
there are too many people who really think like that.
Good show, though.

My vote is for Dustin Hoffman, too -- here's my theory:
Matt Groenig is a BTF (BigTimeFan) of "The graduate" -- hence
the MANY recurring references to it. He (or someone on the production
team) was in touch with Mr. Hoffman, and suggested that the two of them
get together.
And history was made.
[baseless speculation mode OFF] :-)
P.S. I don't read this newsgroup anymore, but I just HAD to find out
what other people thought about this one...

Yes, those are all valid - and, as discussed before, the parting scene
with Lisa and Bergstrom in the train station was reminiscent of many old
movies. By the way, as another possible media reference : Bergstrom's
final speeches to Lisa reminded me an awful lot of the old TV show "The
Fugitive," about an unjustly accused man who was always on the run from
the law - remember all of Bergstrom's talk about how "the life of a
substitute teacher is a lonely one," "always on the run," etc. What do
other people think?

Sheesh, at least one other person finally recognized this, but no one has
mentioned it yet, so natch I will!!!!
I didn't catch that line 'Mrs. Krabappel, you're trying to seduce me....',
when I initially watched the episode, but what got me rolling on the floor with
laughter was the way they animated that scene, which I did catch. Let me elabo-
rate...
Ms. Krabapple and Mr. Bergstrom are in a classroom, discussing Ms. Kra-
bapple's "Marital status". Ms. Krabapple is smoking a cigarette, and there are
a couple of seconds of screen time where we see Mr. Bergstrom framed in a tri-
angle by Ms. Krabapple's legs. This is EXACTLY like the famous seduction scene
in "The Graduate"; in fact, the shot of Ben(Dustin Hoffman's character) framed
by Mrs. Robinson's legs(Anne Bancroft's character) was used as a publicity
still shot for the movie. How do I know??? Well, my Criterion Laser Disc copy
of "The Graduate" says so (and they use that same shot as the cover picture for
the disc....)
BUT (you knew there'd be a but, didn't you??? (-:), no one has mentioned
yet another reference to "The Graduate" in this episode. When Mr. Bergstrom is
leaving for another substitute position in Capitol City, and Lisa says she'll
run after the train when he leaves, and does, this is also like a scene in "The
Graduate" when Ben runs after a bus when Elaine(Katherine Ross's character) is
in Berkeley. Except Ben gets on the bus, and Lisa didn't get on the train....
SO, given all that information, my bet is on Dustin Hoffman providing the
voice for Mr. Bergstrom under the alias "Sam Etic". The voice sounded much TOO
much like him, and all of the secondary information also points to him.
BTW, is "The Graduate" one of Matt Groening's favorite movies, or maybe
the writers??? By my count, that's FIVE separate references to the movie spread
over the course of two different episodes, making it the most referenced movie
in the series....... I didn't really start watching closely in the first season
to notice if there were any there, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was....

According to our local FOX affiliate, WXMI, it was Dustin. I couldn't take
the uncertainty any longer, so I called and asked.
BTW, did anyone notice the "Krusty" poster in Bart's classroom? It had a

MRS. ROBINSON:
If you saw Fox's _The Simpsons_ Thursday, you may have noticed a new
voice in the credits - Sam Enid.* Enid's voice sure sounded familiar,
almost like Dustin Hoffman. And gee, there sure were a lot of
references in _The Simpsons_ to Hoffman's first hit, _The Graduate_,
thrown into a story about Lisa falling into love with her substitute
teacher. Shazam! It turns out Enid is none other than Hoffman, whose
contract with _The Simpsons_ stated that his real name could not be used
on the credits or in publicity.
*- This is not my typo. That's how it is in the paper.
Congratulations to everyone who caught it.
