Springfield seems to me to be an amalgam (sp?) of numerous places in Oregon;
specifically, Springfield, Or, which has a long-standing feud with Eugene.
Plus there's all the nuke plant jokes that are so reminiscent of the
Washington Power Supply System (called whoops!). Plus, Matt lived in
Oregon.

You know, I think that the writers keep adding all sorts of nice little
tid-bits to make it a new Springfield all the time (great marketing
technique)

Once there was a time when everyone assumed it was in IL due to the Jebedia
Springfield character being taken from Abraham Lincoln (who was born there)

Then it was Springfield MA in the "Cartridge Family" because thats where
the largest gun manufacturing plant existed in the past.

Then there is MO and possibly TN because of the existence of Shelbyville
withing 100 miles.

Then there is OR because Matt used to live in that area......

Getting us to all argue about it on a newsgroup......NOW THAT'S
MARKETING!!!!

Keep it up guys!

Being from Illinois, I would like to take credit for Abraham Lincoln being
born here (and for containing Springfield), but Lincoln was actually born
in Kentucky. And Springfield, IL is not the one mentioned inthe cartoon,
although Shelbyville is a mere 40 miles from Springfield in IL.

Yes, we Illinois residents call our state the "Land Of Lincoln" because
Abraham Lincoln became famous in Springfield, Illinois. However, Abraham
Lincoln was actually born in Kentucky, not Illinois. Lincoln didn't live in
Illinois until he was about 12 years old, IIRC.

Yeah. Also, it's adjacent to a state where gambling is legalized (near the
border). We've also seen references that it's on the east coast of the U.S. as
well as the west.

It's FICTIONAL. It's NOWHERE. If you were to ask Matt Groening where it was,
that's what he'd say. IF YOU COVERED EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THE WORLD, YOU WOULD
NOT BE ABLE TO FIND THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF SPRINGFIELD, BECAUSE IT
DOESN'T REALLY EXIST HERE IN YOU-AND-ME WORLD, WHICH HOMER ONCE VISITED IN THE
HALLOWEEN EP ...

Yep. As a native Shelbyville, Tenn. Shelbyvillian, I have to say that
thought crossed my mind.

It is my understanding, however. That the name Springfield was chosen
because more towns in the U.S. are named Springfield than any other name. It
is also my understanding that neighboring Shelbyville is the second most
popular name in the U.S.

Yea, if there's is anything I hate it's speculation and free speech! I
mean, everyone in this newsgroup is FORCED against their will to read
everypost, especially the ones pertaining to "Where is Springfield." Why,
we should just find the people who start these posts and murder them in the
street! I mean, Springfeild isn't real! Who cares if it might be fun to try
and figure out the possibilities? Let's just bite everyone's head off who
brings up the subject, okay? Okay.

Don't you hate it when two threads of the same name collide?

why do SNPP insist on putting pointless comments on the end of each scene in the Simpsons scripts?
It's frickin' annoying.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Fairview is #1, and Springfield #2.

Actually, you're pretty correct. And for a bonus question, riddle me this:
Why are there 138 Fairviews and only 50 states?
