Glad to see this group created, I didn't want to have
to read through everything in rec.arts.tv to see
articles on the Simpsons. I couldn't help but notice
in my last Entertainment Weekly that the Simpsons
were ranked #3 in the Nielsen ratings, so I guess
we should have plenty of action here :).

Number three???!!!! Who has the infernal audacity to prefer two
other shows to the Simpson's. Just further proof that our society
is truly *SICK*.

#3? I just looked at the Nielsens for April 16-22, and they
are ranked #36! (tied with Newhart).

When was the #3 rating??? I don't recall them busting the top 20...

_Entertainment Weekly_ posts the top and bottom 5 shows *based on
number of viewers*, which is NOT how Nielson ranks them. The official
ranking comes from the ratings numbers, i.e. HOUSEHOLDS. A show
watched by 100 people alone in 100 rooms will rank higher in the
Nielsons than one watched in 10 rooms full of 10 people. Simpsons is
notorious for "packing 'em in", but the ratings look primarily at how
many sets are tuned in. You'll notice that nowhere in _EW_ do they
refer to their list as "the top 5 rated shows", because they're not.
They're the top 5 WATCHED shows.

Here are the recent Nielson ratings for the show:
viewers rating share rank
3/18 ............ 33.5 17.5 26 11
3/25 ............ 30.3 16.9 25 14
4/08 ............ 23.7 13.2 20 32 (against a Home Videos double-header)
4/15 ............ 31.2 15.9 26 *16
4/22 ............ 21.9 12.3 20 *36
4/29 ............ 30.4 16.4 25 13
(* indicates a tie that week)

[FYI - I post all the ratings in rec.arts.tv every Wednesday]

For comparison, here are some numbers from this week:

Home Videos ..... 39.7 22.0 36 1
Cheers .......... 31.8 21.2 34 2
Different World . 29.5 19.5 33 3
Conway's America. 30.0 17.0 26 12
Simpsons ........ 30.4 16.4 25 13

Hope this clears up some questions.

It would seem that the presence of a newsgroup 'alt.tv.simpsons' is
just further proof that our society is populated with mindless sheep
ready to jump on the bandwagon of any new trend.

No, actually it exists due to a deranged hacker's mind in a fit of boredom

Well, I have two comments:

1.) You can always tune to the "arts 'n crafts" channel at 8:30 PM on
Sunday evenings for some side-splitting excitement. (Just as
you can read the alt.mindlessly.boring.newsgroup of your choice).

2.) Since you're reading this can you say "BAAHHHH"?

And yet several articles later you posted about the opening of the show.
It appears to me that the bandwagon jumping extends to you also.

Just because something is popular doesn't make it trendy (Michael Jackson,
sushi and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles notwithstanding). Trendiness implies
a kind of mindless "good enough for them, good enough for me attitude", which
ironically enough, was espoused by none other than Homer himself when he
said to Bart, "Before you say something, make sure it is what everyone else
thinks, too."

This show IS satire, also. A later posting by you said it isn't, it's just
anything for a laugh. Satire, when done well, can be pretty damn funny
(ever read "Candide"?). The cops eating donuts, the Indian/Pakistani
convenience store clerk and the lack of safety at the nuclear plant are all
satirical pokes at our society.

So (need I say it?),

DON'T HAVE A COW, DUDE!

Chill out, and let us enjoy our show.

(P.S. If this group gets to be like rec.arts.startrek, THEN you can complain.
Until then, this is a pretty good place to relax for a while).

And mindless sheep who automatically disregard something simply because it's
popular. Think about it: Maybe we like The Simpsons because IT'S FUNNY!

Ack.

What the hell are you doing posting here? I've only stomached
three of your posts so far and already I think you're an asshole.
Why do you read and post to a group if you don't like the subject?
Are you one of the mindless sheep? Or just mindless? What's your
point?

Stomached? As in force fed, maybe? No one is making you read my
postings. If you don't like 'em, don't read 'em. And in the mean
time, I will continue to post--what I want and when I want to. I

The Simpsons is such a great show! What *I* like about it are the
jokes that you KNOW only the adults (ie, non little kids) will get!
Does anyone know if the Simpsons are shown in any other countries?
(Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers is shown in Japan, for example)... I wonder
how they would react to the American sense of humor in Simpsons...
Also, I heard that they didn't expect the Simpsons to be such a
success, and didn't have that many episodes made, and are now trying to
see what they can do. Anyone hear anything about this?

Let me put it to you this way: when the subject says "Re: Simpsons", that
sure gives me reason to skip the message, because I know, I KNOW, that
someone is waiting right under my next keystroke to come out and
pummel the newsgroup. Yeah, man.

Actually, the point is that, even if you do like the Simpson's, it
doesn't that you are required to read the newsgroup. It's entirely
voluntary. So, if you don't like what's in the newsgroup, unsubscribe.

The people here are just trying to have fun. Don't take everything
so seriously.
