Tonight I saw (for the upteenth time) the episode where Mr. Burns steals
the puppies from Bart and Lisa, and it dawned on me that I haven't the
foggiest idea who Rory Calhoun actually is. Does this person *really* stand
on his hind legs? Can someone enlighten me?

TIA!

As I recall, Rory Calhoun was a film actor in the '30's or '40's. I'm
not sure what the reference has to do with standing on hind legs,
though.

You know, Burns can't shoot Bart and Maggie because they're "standing on

Rory was best known for westerns, but he never really achieved
widespread fame. Anyway, the "standing and walking=Rory Calhoun" joke
is a complete non-sequiter, much like when Bart correctly guessed that
the guy who "always wore a shirt" was Ed Sullivan.

Rory Calhoun -- movie actor. Funny name. Perfect for an episode of the
Simpsons.

Rory Calhoun was an actor in western films in the 40s and 50s. I can
assure you, he *did* stand on his hind legs....but then, so do many
people. Inside joke, maybe?

Rory Calhoun, to the best of my knowledge, was a movie cowboy of the Forties.
As far as I know, he generally stood on his "hind" legs when walking or
standing, and when prone, supine or in a seated position did not.
It's sort of like the reference Mr. Burns makes when he's talking about
sex on TV and says "Vilma Banky...now she exuded sex with the lifting of
an eyebrow..."

If any of you are familiar with Gilligan's Island, you may remember an
episode in which a big game hunter visits the island and decides he wants
to hunt tha most dangerous animal in the world--man! He chooses Gilligan
(of course). Anyway, THAT was Rory Calhoun
Which, of course, still doesn't explain the himd legs remark!

Correct. But for the curious, here's Mr. Calhoun's filmography, courtesy
of the Internet Movie Database. Oh, and if you're interested, the Oracle
of Bacon says Mr. Calhoun has a Bacon number of two.

In the German version they are talking about Boris Becker. In this case it makes a little more sense. I just watched the episode and I couldnt help myself, even though this topic has been dead for more than 16 years ;).

When I first saw that Simpson's episode I asked my grandmother (who could not stand and thus did not watch the Simpson's) if she knew who Rory Calhoun was. When she said she did, I asked if he was known for anything in particular. Her answer: "Just standing around I guess. " She couldn't really back that up with any sort of detail though.
Lucky coincidence maybe? Still looking.

In the latin american version of the episode, Burns refers to Don King as the guy that's always standing up and walking. Never understand it, of course. The "because" and inside joke reason is the more accurate, I think.

So, 20 years later than the original post on this thread, and we are no closer to the answer to the question. Catchy song tho!

I named my cat Rory Calhoun because he's always standing and walking around on his hind legs. I have no idea who Rory Calhoun is beyond this Simpsons reference. Pretty awesome this thread still exists 23 years later.
