Funny you should ask. I was reading a web page about urban legends [*] the
other day, and it reminded me of a similar request someone made a year or
two ago.
Here's the story: Supposedly, as a prank on Matt Groening, the animators
put together an X-rated "Simpsons" tape. Like a Halloween special, it was
divided into a series of shorter stories. One featured Homer and Marge, and
there were a few others with such improbable combinations Homer and Maude
Flanders. When Mr. Groening finally saw the tape he was, shall we say,
displeased with this new interpretation of the characters, and all the
existing copies were destroyed -- except for one or two that, like the
truth, are out there somewhere.
Now, here's the debunking:
1) Animation is extremely time-intensive. Even a minute's worth involves
hundreds of drawings, plus prep work such as storyboarding, plus coloring
and transfer to videotape. The staff is already got almost too much to do
just with producing twenty-five (twenty-six this season) regular episodes.
I doubt they'd want to invest that much time just to carry off a joke.
2) It seems to me that having a bunch of animators sit around drawing
X-rated toons is like asking for a sexual harrassment lawsuit. Hell, it's
like -demanding- a lawsuit. Again, it's probably not worth the effort for a
prank.
3) Unless this was a silent film (the legend doesn't say either way), you
would need the cooperation of the voice actors, and in this case some of
those actors are women. Outside of the "dedicated" porn industry, most
women would turn up their nose at such work. Do you really think Julie
"voice of Marge" Kavner would go along with this?
4) There's the fairly mundane (but true) argument that nobody credible has
ever actually seen this tape, or even said they have a "friend of a friend"
who has seen it.
So there you have it. Mr. Gee doesn't get his tape, but he may have
uncovered a.t.s.'s very own Urban Legend (tm). Not that he'd find it much
consolation, but congratulations!
