I'm not an afficionado of the show, I don't belong to any fan clubs or
get crazy on the topic. I just love the hell out of it and deem it
one of the most intelligently written shows of all time combined with
authentic "funny" laced with fearless satire. I'm aware of the
ongoing controversy of the enigmatic location of S'field, but never
pursued the answer other than a brief thought now and then. This is
most likely old news (I spent the last hour surfing the Simpsons
expecting to see comments regarding what I saw on a recent episode and
saw nothing): The Simpsons were at Disneyworld in Orlando and in one
scene a road sign read: "Springfield - 2,653 miles" (I may have
transposed the 6,5,3,..but it's moot). That sign CONCLUSIVELY PROVES
that Springfield is in Oregon. I'm VERY expert in navigation but only
needed a length of string and a globe of the Earth to PROVE this. I
didn't need navigational charts or instruments.....try this: .....get
a globe or even a simple road map of the CONTINENTAL USA and some
string. Using the distance scale on the map, roughly calculate 2,653
miles on the string (again, the 6, 5 or 3 may be transposed, but
yopu'll soon discover that it doesn't mean a damn...it's moot! Put
one end of the 2,653 mile piece of string on Orlando, stretch out the
string keeping the Orlando end firmly in place and then make an arc.
About 95% on the States are inside the arc and the only 2 States that
are anywhere near close to being that dist. from Disneyworld are
portions of Wash. and Ore. Washington does not have a Springfield.
(..the following is the lead-in to S' field Ore. website:

WWWelcome to Springfield, Oregon - ... sailing, backpacking, hiking
and rafting activities available in Oregon's mountains, rivers and
lakes which are all within a two hour drive of Springfield. ...
http://www.el.com/To/Springfield/

Did I just waste my time? Is this common knowledge?

One minor problem with your theory. Maps on the program have shown
Springfield to be located on the East, West and Gulf coasts. Which one
do you want to believe?

CLUES NOT IN YOUR FAVOR
1. The Simpsons were at Euro Disney in Orlando, Italy.
2. West Springfield is as big as Texas.
3. In one episode, they rafted down a river and wound up in the ocean
near an oil rig on the East coast. Which conveniently had a Krusty
Burger!
4. I used by map of the USA that was on my Krusty Burger place mat,
see #3, and I wasn't able to duplicate what you did!
5. There's a NEW Mexico?
6. According to Ernest Borgnine, see #3, you are wrong!
7. Bart and his gang once drove to Nashville via Branson, Missouri,
in a car in one weekend.
8. There is a Civil War battlefield near Springfield.

CLUES IN YOUR FAVOR
1. The bikers who kidnapped Marge said that it was easy to drive to
Springfield from Bakersfield.
2. Homer and Neddy drove to Vegas pretty easily.

MY CONCLUSION
1. You are no crazier than anyone else here. WELCOME!

Moreover, this scene is a gag. Why there's a sign which indicate Springfield
at more than 2 000 miles away (with a very exact number) ? And nothing says
that it's THE Springfield the Simpsons live. That could be another
Springfield.
