BEST: Lisa's Sax (3G02)
What else does I said about this??? Except we waited around an year and an
half for that!!!
WORST: All Singing, All Dancing (5F24)
As always, Alf Clausen did an great job in giving us the best novelty
episode since the Shary Bobbins, as he giving much of the new footage, by
giving OFF singing for most of the episode. But, with the expection of the
"We Put The Spring In Springfield" number, much of the clips were nothing
more than an infocommerical for the "Songs In The Key Of Springfield" CD. As
Bart said in "Miracle On Evergreen Terrace" (5F07), "It's Craptacular!!!"

Actually, two years; it seemed to have been made in 1995, which shows in the
episode (the Woody Allen jokes, a flashback dating to 1990 as "5 years ago").

Best for me would be either "Lisa's Sax" or "Treehouse of Horror" (neither
representative of the regular season episodes, however). The worst would
be "The Principal and the Pauper" (despite being a clip show, at least
"All Singing" didn't claim anyone was really an imposter for the past 9
seasons).

The funny thing is, if "The Principal and the Pauper" aired, say, in season
2, we all might have liked it better. (Okay, it was a little too off the
wall to be a real second season episode. Consider it one of the less strong
episodes from that season.) The biggest complaint I hear about "Principal"
is that it asked the viewer to ignore nearly a decade of accumulated history
about one of the most well-known supporting players. In "The Simpsons'"
second season, relatively little was known about Skinner and the revelation
would have been easier to accept.

Yes, it was a pretty lousy time to try and destroy the continuity
of a character we've all come to know and care about. However, with that
aside, I wasn't blown away by how the whole thing was executed anyhow. It
wasn't very funny, and its approach to emotion was contrived and pathetic.
Gags were weak. Such as, the car gag (few come to mind. I haven't seen the
episode since I taped and erased it.) And the whole idea that Skinner ever
was a juvenile delinquent is hard to swallow during any time period, given the
fact Skinner is supposed to be an uptight character. (But like you said, it's
easier to change things we know about someone if we've come to know them for
only a short time.)

Excellent point, Benjamin. Maybe the sudden lurch in continuity so shocked us
that we focused solely on that, and ignored any possible redeeming values the
episode might possess. I for one will attempt to judge it in a new light when
it is shown agian.

No one seemed to notice that this episode was executed FANTASTICALLY! The
concept created an interesting moral dilemma. This is even more of a feat
considering this plot has never been done before. I can't believe there are
people who don't like it.

I added that to my sig because we used to have dozens of posts a week asking
whether Smithers is gay. I hoped it would clear up a lot of the clutter that
filled this newsgroup. In this case, it seems to have worked (now we get "Is
Milhouse gay?" instead), but in the case of the other two parts of my sig... oh
well.
