There was Tito Puente, but he would kill Burns through song.
I can't remember the others, but for it to be one of them "you'd have to
ignore all the Simpsons DNA evidence, and that would just be absurd"

I had it on good authority that it was the dog, but obviously that turned
out to be bullshit.

The official theories were

Wayland Smithers

Homer Simpson

Snake

Tito Puente

Groundskeeper Willie

Apu

For what reasons I can't remember, but the Simpsons all made up fake endings
and red herrings to mislead the sweepstakes and compeitions.

Santa's Little Helper was one of them.
I think one of the theories was Mr Burns pointed to "S" and "W" on the
sundial as he fainted, thus pointing to the killer's initials - in this case
it was going to be "Simpson's Mutt" (upside down W).
It sounds lame...but it was one of the alternatives.

If you just watch the episode, they go through the suspects and explore the
motives one by one.
eg. Moe - his bar was forced to close
Barney - Moe's bar was forced to close
Skinner - He cost the school a lot of money
Willie, Tito Puente, Mr Lago - Lost their jobs as a result

One of the popular theories, even mentioned in "Entertainment Weekly"
magazine, was that Homer did it because he was standing in front of
some signs that said "YES" while other suspects passed in front of
signs that said "NO".

Personally, I thought Burns shot himself (I did notice his holster was
empty - and that it was in the "right-handed" position, but Burns is a
lefty, so he would have had to reach across his body to draw it)

Yes, but the original poster was complaining about spelling, so we have
to assume that spelling counts, don't we?

My favorite theory, enumerated at http://www.snpp.com/guides/super.dude.html, was
that it was Super-Dude, who never really died or was possibly resurrected ala "Pet
Cemetery". "Ah, the school normally doesn't smell so rank...."

This was before I knew about the bullet, I was thinking that Burns
fired a shot at Mel but missed (hence the gunshot) and got stabbed.

Oh, my, this is fun. Exceptible???? I believe you mean 'acceptable.' And,
BTW, it's not the only way to spell it. 'Misspelt' is a word. According to
The New York Library Writer's Guide to Style and Usage, "When a prefix is added
to a root word, both the prefix and the root retain their original spelling,
with no letters dropped or added." Thus, to mis-spell something is to
'misspell' it. And 'misspelt' is a perfectly valid alternative to
'misspelled', according to the Webster's II New Riverside University
