I don't recall when he said that, but if you watched the newest episode,
with Burns long lost son, you can see that he knocked up some girl back in
1939. Not the action of a gay man.

I think that the recent references to burns sexual adventures resulting
in a son, his attraction to Marge, and stealing grandma Bouvier would
indicate that he is not gay.
I know his preferences tend to be towards women i.e Marge in
particular but there are quite a few gay innuendos in other episodes

This was a Halloween episode. It was a clip called "King Homer" and it
was in Treehouse of Horror III, but it was Smithers, not Burns, that
said "I think women and seamen don't mix," in reference to a question by
Burns about what he thinks (I guess about Marge coming with them to Ape
Island).

It was smithers who said "I think women and seamen don't mix" when Burns
asked him "What do you think?" about Marge joining them. Although
Smithers wasn't Smithers, Burns wasn't Burns, & Marge wasn't marge: It
was Treehouse of Horror III (The Simpsons Halloween Special III). I
think Smithers tends to have the innuendos. Burns seems to have proved
himself as a stark hetero. Cheers, -Brendan
There's one episode where (don't remember the context) but Smithers admits
his love of Mr. Burns and burns tells him to shut up rather harshly. This
indicates to me, (much as Burns having a kid and chasing Marge among
others) that Burns is not gay.
Favorite Burns/Smithers scene:
(when he's choosing an heir)
Burns: Oh don't worry Smithers, i have something better planned for you.
When I die, you'll be buried alive along with me. [shows model
scene with smithers cringing in horror at being buried alive]
Smithers: Oh....goody...

I like this one because it shows that even Smither's devotion to Burns has
limits.

I don't think so, didn't he once fought Granpa Simpson once for the hand
of Marge's mum?
Secondly didn't he also turned up at some strip joint in the episode
where Homer was caught with a stripper?

Why?
Smithers: his screen saver
his comments re Sideshow Bob's election platform
Skinner: when he asks Bart how he can get out of the Army, Bart replies
that Skinner should make a pass at his C.O. Skinner replies "Done.....
and done!"
Feel free to add to these.
Actually, Mr. Burns still appears to have a sex drive, and it seems to
be centered on the Bouvier family, since he's fallen in love with both
Marge and her mother (much to the chagrin of her husband and his
father). I wonder how long it's going to take him to discover Patty
and/or Selma.

Smithers, for sure, but Skinner?

That was simply a ploy to get out of the army. In [7F15] "Principal
Charming", Skinner not only said he wasn't a "homersexual", but fell
madly in love with Patty.
