Dear friends of Seinfeld (and american movies):

Why in earth you may never see in american movies that people go to
the bathroom to pee or to defecate. "I'll go to the bathroom to wash
my hands" - they say. OK, ok., I certainly hope you people DO that
AFTER doing business. Not before.
Imagine an episode of Seinfeld where that bold little guy have an
opstipation ????

There is also the episode where Jerry is in the bathroom and Poppy comes
out and doesn't wash his hands. This was the episode where Jerry's
girlfriend wouldn't taste the Apple pie. Poppy flushed the toliet and
came out of the stall so we have to assume he used the bathroom.
Although I have never seen anyone use the bathroom in the apartments.
Except George did use the bathroom once in Jerry's apartment and so did
Jerry's mother. Other than those two though, I don't think anyone ever
uses the restroom in their apartments.

I can think of a few references to using the um, facilities on Seinfeld.

The "spare a square" scenes revolves around women in the bathroom,
obviously using the toilet or they wouldn't need toilet paper.

A few scenes with George in the bathroom: the Vandelay industries scene,
when he runs out with his pants around his ankles; the 3-D picture scene,
where he gets so enthralled with the picture he forgets to put his
clothes back on before rejoining the party.

And wasn't there an episode where Kramer was having a problem moving the mail?

Any others anyone can think of?

How about the one where Kramer passes a kidney stone. Ugh! Although not
one of the main characters of the show, I remember an episode where Kramer
rushed into a bathroom stall to take a picture of Jerry's accountant doing
crack but instead was using the facilities. Than the parking garage
episode with Jerry and George infesting the mall with their urine.
Kramer also had some kind of intestinal gastration when he was trying to
get the part to play himself on the TV series and wound up going to far
off places trying to find a toilet. That's all I can think of in 5
minutes anyways.

While completely naked, Michelle Darrah proposed:

Definitely the most blatant reference to using the bathroom.

George is always going to the bathroom.
There was that episode where he quizzes Jerry to name streets; George
promptly provides the best bathroom at the location.

I think the episode you are talking about is the one in which
Kramer shows up at an audition for the part of Kramer for the
pilot. All of a sudden he has to go to the bathroom, leaves
the NBC building, and the next thing you know he is running
through Central Park. He later tells Jerry that he got mugged
at Central Park and eventually 'forgot' about it.

(at least I think that's how it went)

What about the Contest where George's mom catches him "treating his body
like an amusement park" while he's on the toilet? He was reading an issue
of Glamour magazine while he was in there.

There was also the episode where George wants to find out if his
girlfriend is bulimic.. he runs into the women's washroom, hears a lady
throwing up in a stall, yells 'AHA!".. and it turns out it's some other
lady.

And the most recent incident had George's boss go into the washroom while
George waited outside. Inside the stall he tells George of a very
important job he must do. George only enters the washroom after the
important details have been given missing everything..

Jerry visits with a sub-leasing tenant who lives down the hall. There, he
uses her bath-room and finds an ointment to treat a fungal disease.

George is in bed with a woman, and feels a certain 'biological need'
starting to make a presence. He has to leave her apartment in the middle
of sex because he is embarrased to use her tiny bath-room.
(*Note* This was only talked about in the Chinese Restaurant episode)

Both George and Jerry relieve themselves in the parking garage.

Kramer leaves an audition for the show 'Jerry', upon realizing that his
'little problem' will soon be over. Here, (I believe) he runs into
several bath-rooms, all of which are occupied.

When George and Jerry visit the president of NBC (gawd, what's his
name??), he interupts them several times to vomit in his bath-room.

In the episode where George is dating a woman with a child (I can't
remember her name either), George uses the bath-room twice--both times he
completely undresses.

In a recent episode, George does not know whether to follow his boss (for
the Yankees) into the stall to get important information on 'The Big
Project'.

Kramer's mother, Babs, was formerly employed IN a bath-room. In this
episode, Kramer walks in to visit his mother, AND George barges in to
hopefuly catch his date in a bulimic act.

In the episode where George converges to Catholothism (forgive me, I know
not the names...), He sits in the bath-room with the water running while
cramming for his test.

George urinates in the locker-room shower.

Elaine goes to the bath-room in the Bubble Boy episode while they were
stopped at the diner. Jerry orders her an entire lunch against her wishes.

Jerry attempts to look through Delores's purse while she's in the
bath-room, in attempts to find out her name.

Jerry visits the bath-room in Poppie's restaurant, only to find the
Poppie does not wash his hands.

Jerry offers to buy back his watch from uncle Leo in the bath-room of a
restaurant.

George gets fired from his real estate job for using the executives
bath-room.

George uses the bath-room while watching the movie 'Breakfast at
Tiffany's', only to find his seat taken when he returns.

George meets a beautiful woman on a subway enroute to a job interview.
She takes him back to her hotel room and tells George to get
*comfortable* while she uses the bath-room.

In the 'There's something wrong with the phone!' episode, George's mother
is hospitalized after falling off of the toilet while reading that her
son is gay.

Kramer, in an attempt to *bust* his accountant for using drugs, barges in
to a stall to take a poleriod picture of the act.

Wulp, I'm sure I missed some important ones, but, I have an incredible
amount of faith in you 'Internet-felders', and I'm sure you'll take up
the slack...
P.S. Is 'bath-room' hyphenated? (hehe)

Two with Kramer: the kidney stone that eventually passed at the circus;
the constipation resulting from the "no vacancy" in a multitude of rest
rooms after a quick departure from the show within a show reading for the
Kramer part. Kramer also had to purchase an enema "aiding" product, but
that might be part of the aforementioned constipation episode.

What's wrong with this topic? You know George has a thing with bathrooms.
He wants to extend the boors of the stall all the way to the floor!
Anyway, I agree, you hardly see them use the bathroom. This is just like

There was an episode a few years back, where George told his
unemployment counselor that he was interviewing for a position at Van
Der lay Industries, as the (I think) Head of Latex & Rubber. He gives
Jerry's phone number, and tells Jerry to answer the phone as "Van Der
Lay Industries." George then goes to the bathroom, while Jerry take
out the trash. The phone rings, and Kramer answers. George then runs
out of the bathroom with his pants around his ankles, yelling, "Van
Der Lay... Van Der Lay!" He falls flat on his face, doesn't get the
unemployment approval, and Jerry returns to see George with his pants
down and his butt in the air. Jerry disapprovingly says, "And you
wanted to be my Head of Latex & Rubber."

Actually, Seinfeld may be the most prominenet bathroom show in TV history. We
see many people in and out of Jerry's bathroom, and even talking from it or to
someone in the bathroom. In addition, we see such scenes as :

1. Spare a sqaure
2. Vandelay Industries
3. George topless, or putting on his shirt, after using the toilet
4. The revelation of Cosmo as Kramer's name.
5. George's girlfriend "refunding", or so he thinks
6. Jerry buying his watch back from Uncle Leo

These are a quick list from memory. I'm sure there are many others.

Be seeing you. Steve Fine.

...Elaine goes several times in the "Can you spare a square" episode

...George goes (and takes his shirt off while he goes) several times

...George is running *from* the bathroom screaming "Vandelay Industries!"

Come to think of it, these peopl go to the bathroom *way* more than

I think in one of the early episodes George claims he knows where the
best public restroom is depending on one's location in Manhattan.

All this talk about restrooms has brought up an interesting point, and
that is that George is really obsessed with bathrooms.
At one point, didn't he tell one of his dates that there should be toilet
paper hall of fame or museum or something? And also this season, he said,
on a couple of episodes, that bathroom stalls should go all the way to the
floor. And, of course, there are all the times where he actually uses
Jerry's bathroom.

Someone must have mentioned George running out of the bathroom shouting
"Vandelay!" Also, in a later episode it was revealed that George
removes his shirt when he goes -- but a stereogram poster can distract
him enough to make him forget he took it off.

At Jerry's apartment Jerry said something to Elaine (maybe he quoted
George) while she was going to the bathroom and she said,
"Like a give a sh--" (last word not completely heard because she
shut the door).

One contradiction here is that in that scene George is wearing his

shirt while visiting the bathroom in order to feel "unecumbered" (sp?).

bathroom complaining about Buttonflies, and how it takes 10 minutes to do
them up. Jerry says he like the Button Fly cos that is an area where he
doesnt need sharp interlocking teeth!

Lest we not forget the episode with Elaine in the bathroom and she
runs out of toilet paper and asks the girl in the next stall (who
happens to be Jerry's current girlfriend) for some toilet paper. I
remember her pleading "Just a ply, I'll take just a ply!" Then when
Elaine spots her going into the bathroom at the local diner hangout,
she runs in there to steal all the toilet paper and then refuses to
give any paper to Jerry's girlfriend. And the episode ends with
Elaine running out of the bathroom carrying armloads of rolls of
toilet paper. That episode is priceless!

There was the parking garage episode where they were wandering around looking

George always takes his shirt off when he goes to the bathroom.
He did this in Jerry's apartment (despite Elaine's comment in another
episode saying that Jerry never lets anyone else use his bathroom).
He ends up shirtless at his girlfriend's mother's party.

And, of course, there's the time George was unemployed and her wanted

George goes into Jerry's bathroom, the phone rings, and Kramer picks it
up. George runs out with his pants down.

This leads to one of my favorite Seinfeld moments. Jerry sees George
lying on the floor and says "And *you* want to be my latex salesman."

And made it well. There *are* many more, several in this week's
syndicated shows (e.g., Jerry says he wants to go to the bathroom
before leaving for the movies and George and Elaine get nervous about
having to talk to each other alone and suggest he wait till they get
to the theatre, George gushing about how much more exciting it is to
use the urinal), just as there are all time.

I'm really confused that so many regular watchers feel "they never go
to the bathroom;" I've often been struck by the fact that they ALWAYS
go to the bathroom. Maybe people just aren't noticing because its
written in so well as just another part of ordinary life that many of
the incidents of going to the bathroom that aren't actually connected
to a joke just become another part of the "nothing" the show is about.
I really can't point to specifics because some of these non-joke
incidents are not related to anything in particular, but I have been
aware on some occasions that when three or more of them are in the
apartment or at Monk's that sometimes one of them does get up and go
into the bathroom without any mention being made of it and returns a
minute later with the others talking all the while and not taking any
particular notice.

Can anyone name another show where use of the bathroom (especially in
relation to use of the toilet -- either expressed or implied -- as
opposed to going in to shave, etc.) as a routine matter of life is
given *more* emphasis?

I agree, I was a bit shocked by this title as well... There's no other
show that integrates tjhis particalur aspect of life into the show as well
as _Sienfeld_. Maybe one of the reasons people don't notice it is that,
unlike other shows, _Seinfeld_ has people going to the bathroom as a
"normal" thing, instead of (when it DOES happen on other shows) always
using it as a punch-line or plot-point (if is't a drama show).

Same thing with eating habits. The Seinfeld gang are always munching on
something, Snapple, fruit, cereal... And they always chow down at Monk's. That's a
great thing about the show. It also adds to the comedy in a big way. Like when Elaine
asks people if they want a snapple. Ha!! Kramer's fruit episodes are great too. The
peaches and when he went and bought all that Wharehouse Store food and was overloaded.

You also have to figure that with commercials that they only have about
twenty minutes of actual show, so if going to the bathroom isn't
relavant to the plot, it's unlikely that they would waste air time to
show them having to use the bathroom. However like most of you have
pointed out, I think Seinfeld has had more bathroom references than most
shows. Usually the bathroom visit is used to get two people alone, or
even create an extra diversion to the things going on around them. Like
when the cast was stranded in the parking garage and couldn't find there
car. Half of that episode was centered around whether or not to urinate
in public. We all remember what happened there. :)

Elaine goes to the bathroom all the time at Jerry's. She often walks out
of a scene and into the bathroom and then back in. It's often a way for
her to get out of a conversation she doesn't want to be a part of.

Then there was a whole episode when Krammer missed his chance and ran all
over NYC to find a bathroom, but then it was too late and he was
constipate the rest of the show.

They also often go to the bathroom at Monk's.

One of the episodes when George was unemployed, he came running out
of the bathroom with his pants around his ankles. He'd lied and
gave Jerry as a job reference, but the people called when he was in
the bathroom and Kramer answered and blew it.

Didn't we also see Kramer in the shower once in the "showerhead"
episode?

What about Elaine? If I remember correctly, Jerry mentioned George's
engagement, she went to the bathroom and said "I don't give a
sh---"(slam)...

Heck what about the time when Gerry (in the episode where he had to
babysit a dog) went to the can while George and Elaine waited
impatiently for him to come out (because they still didn't know each
other well and felt uncomfortable in each other's presense).

I was thinking about all the 'Bathroom' episodes after reading this
thread. There were A LOT of them, those already mentioned plus..
1. Airplane - Elaine travels 'coach' and enters after a 'Longsoreman'
stinks up the room.
2. Elaine tries to borrow toilet paper from the phone-sex girl
3. George confronts his suspected bolimic girl friend in the bathroom
4. They use the bathroom excuse to switch phone message tapes
5. Poppie(sp) doesn't wash his hands when Jerry is there
6. What about Poppie pee's on the couch (close)
7. George is beaten up by the convict in the Airplane washroom
8. George knows all the bathroom spots in New York by Intersection...
'Lincoln Centre' etc..
9....more?

Heheh. Well, you might even consider the parkade episode...you're right,
a lot of bathroom allusions. Whoever said they never go to the bathroom
is probably thinking of star trek.

It wasn't that. It was the 'world's collide' episode where Elaine was hanging out
with Susan and Jerry told Elaine, "You know, George isn't too thrilled about your new
friendship." Elaine then went into the bathroom and said, "Yeah, well I don't really
give a sh---(slam)...

How about Kramer trying out for the Kramer part on Jerry? First, the
bathroom was full; tried across the street; through the park, got
mugged and didn't get to go! Then he had to use the device because he
missed his opportunity.

I loved it when one of George's schemes is being ruined by Kramer talking
on the phone, and he runs out the bathroom, screaming with his pants downs
by his feet and he falls down.

9. George comes running out of Jerry's bathroom with his pants around
his ankles when Kramer fails to answer the phone with the Vandalay
industries greeting.
10. Jerry and Kramer note that George is tucking his shirt in after
being in Jerry's bathroom
12. George forgets to put his shirt back on after coming out of the
bathroom at the party at his wealthy girlfriend's apt.
13. Kramer snaps a photo of Jerry's accountant sitting on the toilet in
the stall at the tavern
14. Kramer bowled over by the spray from the showerhead used for
elephants.
15. Mrs. Seinfeld about to pee in Jerry's bathroom when Elaine forces
her to give a urine sample.
16. George complains about the button fly when putting his dungarees
back on upon leaving Jerry's bathroom.
17. Kramer passes the kidney stone when taking a piss at the circus
18. George has to satisfy an impending intestinal reqt. in the middle of
having sex.
19. Kramer can't find an unoccupied bathroom when he has the runs during
his audition to play himself in the pilot at NBC studio. In the second
part of the episode - he is now constipated and must use the "dreaded
apparatus".
20. Jerry and George are arrested for urinating in the parking garage.
21. George screams gleefully about finding body lotion in the bathroom
of the motel room that he and Jerry stay at when they go to LA.
22. Newman asks to use Jerry's bathroom so he can get a sample of
Jerry's hair.
23. Jerry goes to the bathroom in the restaurant to buy back his watch
from Uncle Leo
24. The NBC president pukes in his penthouse bathroom after eating the
contaminated pasta primavera.
25. Elaine uses Jerry's bathroom to put on the dress that she bought
that makes her look hippy - she was mislead by the skinny mirrors in the
Dept. store

That's more than enough - many memorable scenes have involved someone
using the bathroom!
