That's the first reference to him I can think of.
George was thinking of many names, and that was the best one he could
come up with. Jerry said the other names sounded "too made up"
Matthew Billington.

That is not the first time George used Art Vandelay. The first i can
remember is when Elaine is going to get George a job with her publising
firm and the boss asks George who is favorite author is. Since George
does not read he says Art Vandelay who wrote "Ventian Blinds." Also in
the episode last year where Geoge sneaks out to see Marisa Tomei he and
Elaine devise a plan so he can get away from Susan. George comes up with
the idea that he is helping Elaine work out a problem with her boyfriend
Art Vandelay who is an import exporter.
Thats my Two Cents

You're wrong. "The stakeout" was the 2nd ever Seinfeld episode.

What do you mean George does not read? He reads.
Actually, I remember an episode in which Elaine gets George an
interview for a job as a book reader, and when asked what authors he
reads, he replies "Art Van Delay"... I'm pretty sure this one came first.
This guy must be someone Jerry or the writers know in real life - he
has been mentioned more than once.

The stakeout is indeed the first use of the name Art Vanderlay.
Remember discounting "The Seindfeld Chronicles" the "Stakeout" is
the first Seinfeld.

I'm sure "The Stakeout" came first because it was one of the 1st
season episodes, where George is still working in real esate, not
looking for a job, especially not with Pendant.
P.S. I'm not a young *man*

NO. "The Stakeout" was like, the second or third Seinfeld episode EVER.
That was the first time Art Vandelay appeared.

"The Stakeout" was the 1st ep of the 1st season, and the 2nd ep ever. The
one Matthew is talking about is of the 3rd season, and it's called "The Red
Dot" (29).
So there.

I was the "young man". I was backing up Nicki's story.
We've just started re-screening old episodes in NZ. I've just watched an
early episode in which George tries to con the Social Services woman
that he is applying for a job as a salesman at Vanderlay Latex. He
tells her to ring Art Vanderlay, giving her Jerry's number.
Any other examples?
Martin
Although Art VanDerlay was mentioned in this episode, it wasn't the
first time. It was in fact the Stakeout which came before this
episode.
