Does anyone know which episode this was? All I remember was Jerry and
George having mustaches while they were inside a restaurant.

That was the first episode of Season 9, "The Butter Shave". They grew
mustaches to "take a vacation from themselves". It was sort of a
gimmick, because we, the audience, didn't see them all summer long.

That whole part never made any sense to me as it was not explained.
It was the first episode of Season nine.

George and Jerry were taking 'a holiday from themselves' or in other words
feeling like different people for a week. It was George's idea.

I think the impression was that it was for more than a week. Since this was in
the first show of a particular season it was sort of a "what did you guys do
for summer vacation" idea. Instead of actually going somewhere for a vacation
they all grew mustaches to "get away from ourselves".
Typically weird Seinfeld idea, but a perfect opening for a show. Short little
idea that was not a major part of the shows plot for that week.

That explains it. Season nine has a lot of things that doesn't make sense.
A lot of people still think it's funny so we have to accept it.

The mustache thing is kind of stupid, but that is just my own opinion.
