You missed quite a bit, here goes: Jerry calls Elaine at work, and pretends
to be on a payphone in order to talk to Elaine without having to talk to the
secretary for a long time before he gets to talk to Elaine. After hanging
up, Elaine comments to the secretary that she should not keep her friends on
the phone a long. The secretary gets mad, and quits. Elaine is upset that
the secretary was mad, and tells Jerry. She talks him into calling her to
apologize. He does, and he gets talked into meeting her for a cup of coffee.
One thing leads to another, and they end up in Jerry's bedroom. She starts
talking dirty to him, and he responds with "...you mean the panties your
mother laid out for you."
Jerry is telling this to George, and when Jerry wispers the dirty talk that
the secretary was saying, George squeezes the ketcup and squirts it across
the table onto the floor.
In the end, Jerry is afraid that the secretary is going to tell Elaine what
he said. He's embarrassed by the way she flew off the handle over his
comment. He even asks the secretary not to tell her, and tells Elaine to
transfer her to another department. Elaine comes over, and tells Jerry that
she was being charged money for long distance phone calls she placed at work,
due to the fact that the secretary got mad that she was transferred. Jerry
says he'll pay for the calls, and is relieved that Elaine doesn't know about
Jerry's comment about the panties. That is why, after getting the check from
Jerry, she says something like, "Well, I have to go and visit my mother, she
bought some panties and they're all laid out for me."
I hope that clears that up, it really was a very funny episode.
Boy - you guys have this one honked up. The girl started talking
"dirty" during sex. Jerry was not use to this and wanted to
participate. She had mentioned her panties. So he said "Oh, the ones
your mother laid out for you" (or something to that effect) just to
"keep up with her".
The joke was that it was a stupid thing to say, it was not what one
would consider "dirty" bedroom talk. The second joke was that the girl
took offense to this ill attempt at dirty talk.
Jerry felt stupid (as he should have) and Elain took advantage of this
at the end of the show. (Too hard to explain all the details - it was
a great episode with complicated writting)
As a viewer, we are not suppose to be concerned with the actual dirty
talk, but with Jerry trying to hide the fact that he said something
STUPID.
Hope this helps.
My take on this is that the "panties" remark by Jerry was just a poor and
awkward first attempt at talking dirty. It is a very stupid thing to say
and doesn't make much sense, but does make sense if your're just trying
to keep the thing going. In this case it backfires. His quite harmless
remark ends up offending Jerry's date, who is obviously more accomplished
at this sort of thing as he is. This is evidenced when Jerry whispers
one of her remarks to George in the restaurant. George reacts by squeezing
and squirting the ketchup bottle that he happens to have in his hand.
The image of the squirting ketchup bottle has another level of symbolism
and humor, that is the male sexual response to this kind of stimulation.

Alright, Jerry was going out with Elaine's secretary, who started "talking dirty"
to Jerry. In order to "keep up," Jerry decided to use the panties line.
Apparently, the girl felt really insulted. She told Elaine at work, even though
Jerry tried everything he could to keep Elaine from hearing the line from the
secretary. Elaine told him the line just to "rub it in" that she in fact did know
the line. As for George squeezing the ketchup and all, that was when Jerry was
telling George what the secretary told Jerry.
I am sure that you are overthinking this one. I don't think most people
really want to think about their parents when they are getting amorous.
To make a comment about a woman's underwear and her mother in the same
breath is a little unusual, borderline kinky.
I think it is just another example of the weird things we say when we
don't know exactly what to say, and they sometimes backfire on us.

No, no! You're both missing what it means! He actually said "are those
the panties your mother laid out for you?". He's probably imagining her
like a little schoolgirl who's mother still picks her clothes. Knowing
Jerry's (in real life) attraction to *younger* women, this is probably
quite Freudian.

I think you nailed that one on the head. OK who hasn't blurted
something embarassing out in the heat of the moment.
