In 1980, he had arguably the most successful debut album in history.
In 1983 he was far less successful. By 1985 and his third album he was
toast.

What happened between 1980 and 1983? The parody of his "Ride Like The
Wind" with Michael McDonald on Gerry Todd and Gene Shalit's butchering
of "Sailing". I wonder if SCTV fans comprised of the majority of
Cross's fanbase orignially, but when SCTV parodied his work, people
began to think "Yeah, he's really lame."

Coincidence? I think not.

Whoever it was who was responsible I'd like to shake their hand and
congratulate them on a job well done. And if they could do an encore
performance and kill off Coldplay, why then I would be a very happy man.

I thought the Ride Like The Wind spoof was more a shot at Michael
McDonald, who did supporting and background vocals in dozens of songs
in the 70's and 80's in addition to his work with the Doobie Brothers
and sometimes it seemed was always going from one recording session to
another. SCTV didn't have much of an effect on McDonald's career.

As far as Christopher Cross, he was the Hootie and the Blowfish of the
80's, a musical act who came out of nowhere and had a big debut album
and two years later it was all over.

Agreed. However I have it on good authority that they did do in Men At
Work.

To this day I can't hear a Michael McDonald tune w/o thinking of Rick's
version...he ruined it or improved it, depending on your taste. (I
picture in my head MM running in & out of the recording studio while
listening to any MM song.)

But who is responsible for wrecking the career of Kris Kross. I loved
those kids. Even if they did where their clothes backwards and
occasionally missed the bus (although they swore they'd never ever do it
again).

In 1991/2 they toured as an opening act for Michael Jackson. Does that
answer your question?

Actually I'm not sure it was a question anyway, as the sentence was not
completed with "?".

I guess maybe they wouldn't drink Jesus Juice with Jacko and he ruined
them within the music industry. I'm not terribly hip to the rap
culture, but wasn't this the act where one was the Mac Daddy and the
other was the Daddy Mac?

BTW I don't dislike Christopher Cross. His first album was pretty
good, and I thought Ride Like the Wind was a pretty good pop-rock tune.
I like to think MTV killed his career, as he came out right before
MTV, and as a somewhat overweight guy who didn't exactly look like
George Clooney had little chance of a successful recording career in
the era of music video.

I think that you hit it on the head. "Sailing" and the other songs on
that album were great, but he was not exactly MTV material, a little
pudgy, balding and wearing those Jimmy Buffett shirts. Of course,
Jimmy Buffett never got played on MTV either!

Jimmy Buffett?!?!?

Ok, we better get off the OT subject of music or it will overtake
everything else.

But I would like to say:

Why don't all you tie-dyed margarita-swilling hippies get jobs!

Oh wait, that is just at the Jimmy Buffet concerts. The rest of the
time Jimmy Buffet fans are all upper management employees.

Cheers,

Actually, I'm surprised you didn't point out to the group that I missed
my period as well.

How rude!

Ok, I know you are goading me now. I can make the jokes if you want.

Though missing such things would have saved you on the outlay of "Dracula's
teabags".

Apologies to all for the offence, but that is one of my favourite
euphemisms.
