When I first saw The Sammy Maudlin Show and heard about Johnny Larue, I just
assumed Johnny Larue was Maudlin's sidekick. There really isn't any difference
between the two. In fact, Johnny's pouts are the exact same sound as William's
laugh. Johnny Larue is just as much a brownoser to Caballero as Williams as to
everybody on Maudlin's show. I don't see the point of William B.'s creation.
They should've just said that Johnny Larue was Maudlin's sidekick, in addition
to being in several other SCTV projects.

What SCTV is JS watching anyway? Can anyone picture William B.
going into Guy's office complaining about being cut off the air?
Or William B. sauvely walking around his female-filled penthouse?
Not likely. Their characters aren't even close.

I'd agree there are similarities, but JLR would not take the indignities WBW suffers nightly. He kisses up to Cabellero when threatened, but nobody else. Those "heartfelt" speeches of WBW would never come out of JLR's mouth. When JLR gets drunk, he get gregarious. WBW drinks and becomes sullen and moody.

I have forgotten the specifics, but there was a REAL case of a talk show sidekick being blamed for bad ratings and quitting the show as WBW did. It may have been Walter godfrey, I forget... but he is based on a real weasely sidekick.

I think Paul Fistintyourface has as much in common with JLR as WBW.

I strongly disagree.
Although LaRue and William B. are both similar as extentions of Candy's real
personality and have a similar laugh they are vastly different characterizations.
Primarily, Larue always plays high status to those around him and finds conflict
with virtually everyone he encounters.
William B. onthe other hand is always plays low status. he is the ultimate yes man
and agrees with everything presented to him no matter how bad.
LaRue is an abuser, William B. is s target.
Both are great and very different characters.

the only thing in them that i readily see as being 'in common,' is
that they're both pretty round. they do seem to be completely
different, otherwise.

Just an aside...it's interesting that on the Solid Gold Telethon, Samy Maudlin,
Bobby Bittman and JOHNNY LA RUE perform...not William B. Williams.
