No, that wasn't him. I think you're thinking of a different Ian!
Trudi
Ian Thomas' big song was "Painted Ladies". I used to play
it at CHWK ages ago .. we were banned from playing it before
7pm because of its "racy" subject matter (btw, we couldn't
play "Band on the Run" because it was "too rocky". You've
got to love small-town radio).

As someone else mentioned, he provided
music for the Strange Brew movie,
appeared on SCTV90
and probably provided much of the music
for the Great White North LP
Once in a while you can catch Ian on
the Red Green Show
I think Ian's last band was THE BOOMERS
They were quite popular in Germany
(go figure)
Anthem (the label that released the GWN LP)
released a CD of Ian's Greatest Hits (18 tracks).
It's really quite good.

I think "Hold On" charted in '81 on the CHUM chart while Santana's version
of his hit happened in '82.
Unfortunately, CHUM never put "The Runner" by Manfred Mann (written by Ian)
on the CHUM 30.
Much Music frequently played (1987, I think) his "Harmony" video (from the
LP "Add Water"). It features Dave Thomas and Gene Levy.
Atlantic haphazardly promoted Ian in the late 70's and early 80's to little
response.
Yeah, he plays the monster truck guy/mechanic, but I forget the
character's name.

I believe many US Public TV stations carry Red Green.
It's been running in Canada for about 6 years.
It's been barely keeping alive by changing networks
and stations (CBC, Global, CHCH, etc.)
Most episodes have been produced in Toronto
or nearby Hamilton.
It's not really THAT similar to SCTV
other than the FISHIN' MUSICIAN segment that
John Candy used to do on SCTV
Both Red Green and F.M.
are probably take offs of a REAL bad
Canadian TV show hosted by Red Fisher.
Red was an old geezer who used to sit around
his (supposedly) Log Cabin out in the woods.
He would swap hunting and fishing stories
with other hunters and fishers.
PLUS... Red used to read these terrible poems.
Red Green is kind of a combo of the Red Fisher show
and Home Improvement.
His character lives for Duct Tape.
For example, one of Red's favourite sayings....
"If it's not broke, you're not trying hard enough".
A lot of Red's character guests are fairly well known
Canadian actors or comedians.
It's a hoot for Canadian to see some of our more
respected actors looking like real bozos.

To put in my $.02, I think Red Green is kind of a lame show. Steve
Smith was good on Smith and Smith but this one doesn't work for me. That
is only my opinon and I have an asbestos suit in case of flames.

But better than Home Improvement :)

My 2 favorite Red-isms:
1. "Duct tape is just a temporary fix. Unless, of course,
it works."
2. Talking about strategies in dealing with women: "It's
kinda like reverse psychology, only backwards."
Last night they held the Gemini awards
Canada's versions of the Emmies.
Patrick McKenna won two Gemini awards.
He won best dramatic actor - for his work on
the Stock Market series TRADERS
and he won for best comedy actor
for his work as Red Green's geek nephew Harold.
Other notable Canadian's that have appeared.....
Graham Greene - was nominated for an Oscar for his role
in Dance's With Wolves.
Rick Green & Peter Wildman -(Frantics)
Paul Gross - star of Canadian TV series DUE SOUTH.
Gordon Pinsent - Canadian actor - man or all trades
actor, writer, director - also plays Paul Gross's father
on DUE SOUTH.
and of course Dave and Ian Thomas.
