Ahhh the Russian show. I'm Glad NBC is running the CCCP1 eps (synd
#'s115-6). To me the original episode marked the highest level for
SCTV. It was the first show of Season 4 cycle 2. It debuted the stylish
Ira Newborn theme, the new opening and bumpers that would last
throughout the rest of the series. The comedy was at its wittiest and
funniest in this cycle of shows. For those of us who had watched SCTV
from it's humble beginnings, this ep signified that the show had truly
hit the big time.
The show opened strongly with the Perry Como sketch, the one that had
them rolling in the aisles at the 1981 Emmy awards. Unfortunately it's
been edited for syndication.
Then, Tammy Faye for Mayberline, followed by the Benny Hill Street Blues
(which didn't make syndication), then Way to Go Woman. The Jazz singer
was also in that episode, so was Wet Nurse. And of course the most
hilarious and skilled wraparound concept thus far. This was a solid
episode top to bottom. SCTV reached new heights of comedy with this
episode.

I never liked the Ira Newborn theme or the 1980's bumpers, just for the record,
although the theme has started to grow on me a little bit lately, seeing old
videos again for the first time in ages...the seasons 2-3 theme is the "true"
SCTV theme for me. But yes, they were growing and expanding as artists.

It's in a US syndie...I'm not up on the episode numbers, but it's the one that
includes the National Midnight Star (your underwear can kill you) and Gerry
Todd with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young...and I believe also the hilarious
Christopher Cross/Michael McDonald parody!
I cannot hear "Ride Like The Wind" without laughing! Never, ever again!
i have a Nick episode that does contain Benny Hill St. Blues
