I'll make a few suggestions, although I'm sure I'm just going to be
duplicating a lot from everyone else here. If so, apologies ahead of time
for the repeats:
The Babe Ruth Story (episode 26) - A chance to see John playing a
good-natured guy who goes through a slow burn to the point he wants to beat
up a sick child.
Dining with LaRue: Health Food Restaurant (Episode 11) - An early LaRue
visit and one of the few times you really wanted to cheer LaRue on when he
gets snotty with others.
Witness to Yesterday (episode 5) - It's really Bonnie Lightfeather's
showcase, but John plays a great straight-man in the bit.
And, of course, BEN HUR! (although that may be too long of a bit for a
tribute; it does feature John's excellent Curly impression, however).
I'll think of some more, but I thought I would start the ball rolling with
these.
--Dale
I think John's shining moment was the opening of "The William B.
Williams Show" when he hurts his leg and struggles thru the monologue.
In fact the whole skit, including his being insulted by Irving Cohen,
is unforgettable...

>There are quite a few, but it

Hey Mr. C,
A tribute to John Candy is a wonderful idea. In fact, I was speaking
with a fellow SCTV fan this past week on the phone and mentioning how
I was watching some of the episodes, and how at times I would laugh
out loud and I suddenly followed the joy with sadness, with a feeling
of 'I really miss him.' Since I never knew him, that really is a
testament to how his comedy touched me and so many others.
I suggest any of the following:
Celebrity Blow Up with Neil Sedaka
Anything from Ben Hur would be essential I think
Dr Tongue's 3D House of Stewardesses
Schmenge's Tribute to John Williams
Me Science with Johnny LaRue
Midnight Cowboy 2 'I'm a Husthler, A Husthler! scene is particularly
classic'
The Babe Ruth Story
Johnny LaRue in the 'Yellowbelly' clip from the 30th Anniversary Show,
or his intro with Lin Ye Tang
The William B Williams Show
Johnny LaRue at the Christmas Party (Santa gives Mr. LaR a crane)
Commercial for Curley Howard Singing the love songs or movie themes, I
forget which one it is
Good luck with this! And thanks for asking!
One of my favourite moments is when Johnny LaRue and Bobby Bittman
are in the bar bitching about how Guy took away their air-time and
gave it to the McKenzies for their Great White North special (with
all-union dancers). It was so clever, and the timing is so good,
they look like they're ad-libbing.
Jim
I've seen a lot of good ones mentioned already, and would like to add to
it one I think is essential: Johnny LaRue's Christmas Party monologue
out in the snow, ending with Johnny receiving his beloved crane shot.

One of John's J. LaR. bits made me laugh when it came back to me the
other day. LaRue had a part in some production that required him to do
an accent. Of course, this was beyond the no-talent LaRue, but he made a
stab at it. In a brilliant few moments, John managed to have LaRue
sliding helplessly among French, Swedish, Spanish and a few other
accents in a desperate attempt to pass himself off as an actor. It was a
scream, and I hope you can find it for the tribute.
Dan
Hey, no fair having 2 different Welles impersonators on the same series!
It was so long ago that I saw this, I never realized that.
BTW, good call on Mr. Mambo. I had forgotten about that one.
No SCTV tribute to John Candy would be complete without his wonderful,
gut busting portrayal of Divine as Peter Pan.
Vic Arpeggio
That was the first thing to come to mind when reading this thread.
I also wouldn't mind seeing a bit of Red Fisher... "I like the catch'em,
don't like to eat'em!" (that might not be an actual quote, it's been a
while since I've seen any of the Fishin' Musician)...

I was also thinking of Red Fisher. The only problem is that the best bits
with the Fishin' Musician are all from Cycle 1 of the Fourth Season, so I
would assume we'll already be seen those on the boxset anyway.
How's about one of the Mayor's fireside chats?
--Dale
And don't forget John as Darryl Sittler and you as Lafleur.
> I also wouldn't mind seeing a bit of Red Fisher...
Oops... that should of course be "Gil Fisher." (Red is the
real-life person he's based on.) Once again I have confused Red Green,
Red Fisher, and Gil Fisher... :-)
> I was also thinking of Red Fisher. The only problem is that the best bits

As a tribute, I guess it should stand alone, especially in case it
doesn't end up on the 4th season discs...
> How's about one of the Mayor's fireside chats?
How're ya doin'? I'm doin' pretty good myself. Well, g'night!
Johnny LaRue: There's *got* to be plenty of La Rue in this...I think there has
to be a clip from the very first "Johnny LaRue Show" from the very first
episode ("Remember...I'm not gay"). Other things that come to mind:
From show #86 (as listed in Dave Thomas's book): There's a short scene between
La Rue and Earl Camembert where after they're done talking, Earl says "TTFN."
La Rue grabs him by the lapels and he says, "What did you say?" "TTFN, ta ta
for now, it's an expression." "Yeah, well ya snuck up on me with it!"
I also like the scene with La Rue in Guy's office pleading for his job after he
finds his parking space taken away from him and his name painted out... "Star
Heads?!"
And of course the parody of the Ed Ames "Tomahawk incident" on the Sammy
maudlin anniversary show.
The Queenhaters...all he had to do is sit there, stare into space and pound on
the drums. Another brilliant contribution to an already great scene.
Mr. Science: "What do you mean, why coffee?"
The Incredible Bulk
And....how could I forget this............this has to include the scene of John
throwing the TV out of the high-rise window from the Season 2 opening. Right?
I know it's a disturbing image, but miniaturized Tatoo (Candy) making
love to a violin and, in the process, crushing it is one of his most
memorable moments to me.
Also, his campaign commercials (as Mayor Tommy Shanks) for
re-election, shot in the mental institution -- Shanks strapped in an
empty bathtub wearing a straight jacket.
Also
* a clip of John as Divine
* John's Jake LaMotta
* a clip of John as Cognac breaking into a rousing version of "Ferry
Across the Mersey."
So many.

The Leave it to Beaver Reunion show
The Officer O'Shaunessy Smoke Detector which came equipped with a snooze alarm.
The ads for Harry's Sex Shop, I think it was called, when John played the
proprieter, who had a giant snake tattoo on his neck and face.
Any of the Farm Film Celebrity Blowups, my personal favorite was when Brooke
Sheilds (Catherine O'Hara) was the guest and started singing a Rod Stewart
song (very badly, I might add) when she blew up.
I remember SCTV once had a precursor of Farm Film Blowup which was a spoof of
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, where the singers would suddenly blow up. The
best part was the Village People blowing up.
Battle of the PBS Stars with Julia Child boxing against Mr Rodgers was another
highlight of John's.
Michael O'Connor - Modern Renaissance Man
"The likelihood of one individual being correct increases in a direct
proportion to the intensity with which others try to prove him wrong"
James Mason from the movie "Heaven Can Wait".

Poor Joe. He'll never be able to figure out which ones to pick from.
At least one station here is playing Xmas music, and the other day,
on came Neil Sedaka. All I could think of was when he was badgered
over his high voice and then blown up by Big Jim and Billy Sol.

My absolute favorite is John Candy as Devine singing "Santa Bring My

That wasn't LaRue. It was Steve Roman.
Really? No doubt my recollection is wrong. Still a funnhy bit. though.

Everyone here has done a great job of giving examples here.
I'd just want to make sure that the LaRue "Street Beef" holiday
edition/Crane sketch gets on the tribute.
That alone could be a tribute. Anyone who doubted Candy was a fine
*actor*, need only watch that performance.
That, and Tommy Shanks coming after Earl on the news set (and slapping
a drunken "Floyd" on the head as he passed by)...that was classic.
Letterman appearances. Notably the third Late Night episode which
featured Candy and Flaherty. Also good (and overtly related to SCTV)
was the appearance by the Shmenge brothers, in which Letterman
instructed Yosh and Stan that they might want to have those things on
their faces looked at.
The Really Weird Tales installment with Candy.
Appearances on Dave Thomas's short-lived CBS show or appearances on
The New Show.
Appearances from his hosting gig on SNL or clips from his Big City
Comedy stint.
Of course, outtakes would be great.
But, a Candy moment that can't be bettered is his praise of Chariots
of Eggs: "I haven't seen the film, nor do I know anything about it.
But I have a friend who knows someone who knew someone who knows
someone who worked on the film in an indirect capacity. But if Bobby
Bittman says it's skillful, then you can bet this will be one hell of
a skillful film. Mr. Skillful!" OK, I'm paraphrasing, but you know
which one I mean . . .

Bless you, Guy, bless you. What a wonderful idea. I can't tell you
how much I'm looking forward to the DVDs. I'll be buying several
copies for friends and family.
There are just so many. For memorable moments, as opposed to entire
sketches, here are a few I'd like to see:
- Mr. Mambo (just for the look on his face).
- Stephan Seely with dry-mouth in "Mel's Rock Pile".
- Also from "Mel's Rock Pile", the reunion show where he asks his wife
(Catherine O'Hara), "Tell zem, go ahead, tell zem why you can't have
children".
- From the Schmenge Brothers, when he turns to the camera wearing the
shark outfit, playing the clarinet.
- As Dr. Tongue, arguing with Bruno as they're trying to escape from
"The Towering Inferno" (I think it was "The Towering Inferno",
anyway).
- As Dr. Tongue arguing with Bruno in the kitchen in "3-D House of
Meat"
- If you can obtain the rights, from the "The Hustler" sketch with
Kevin Kline from "The New Show", clips of his laughing derisivly at
the ineptness of Kline's billiards talent. The laughing is shown in
passing; the only sound is the music. Also, after he misses an easy
shot he says to himself, "Oh Fats, why don't you just join a ladies
club".
-From "The Sammy Maudlin Aniversary Show", the replay William B.
taking one in the schnutz (his term, one I use all the time) in the
take-off on the Ed Ames tomahawk appearance from "The Tonight Show".
Also, include Sammy's intro to the clip as well as what Sammy and
William B have to say about it after.
- Also from "The Sammy Maudlin Aniversary Show", getting caught taking
a peek down Liza Minelli's (Andrea Martin) top.
- Johnny LaRue's Isolation Tank Emporium commercial. He even does a
Curly in that one.
- The photos of him as Edna Boyle's new husband.
- His comments as Sue "Bopper" Simpson's boyfriend after seeing Libby
Weiss's play.
- As Mrs. Falbo's assistant doing the countdown with the number cards.
Scary Terry
>I vote for the slightly demented Bob's Big Boy! "Are ya finished with that?"
How about the ad in which he appeared as a leprechan for the luncheon meats
with a rainbow slick on them?
Oh! And of course, Harry (the man with a snake on his face)'s Sex Shop ads?
