The show was called, "The Fishin' Musician", although I can't remember
Candy's character's name. He had a couple other groups, including The
Plasmatics (with Wendy O'Williams) who went HUNTING and found a gorilla?!?
The Tubes was my favorite episode, especially with the "Charlie
Daniels-lookin' guy" who "kept gettin' us stuck in the grass".

Broadcast from the Scuttlebutt Lodge.

Actually, the guy looked like Willie Nelson. He kept "pulling a 180 on me".

Okay, a free Freshmouth Bass to anyone who can tell me the name of the song
that the Tubes sang on the show.

It was "Sushi Girl".

The Tubes sang "Sushi Girl" and also (later on the show, when Lola Heatherton
broke down) "Talk to You Later". The character was Gil Fisher of "The Fishin'
Musician". And Gil kept referring to the "Willie Nelson-lookin' character".
Can't remember the singer's name of the Tubes but during the "Sushi" song he
did a really obscene take where he licked the rice out of a freshly-slit fish.
I didn't like it, and I understand Flaherty didn't either. "Shocking sexual
innuendo" was never part of SCTV.
Of course, it looks terribly tame now.
Did y'all know that back in those days NBC actually asked SCTV to put their
"drug and sex" humor at the front of the show (11:30 CST) and leave the
"intellectual" stuff for the past-midnight hour? Thank goodness they ignored
that stupid request.
And, by the way, did anybody ever see ABC's 'competition' for SCTV called
"Fridays"? They had Michael Richards (Kramer on Seinfeld) doing his same
stupid character ("Bad hair is funny") portraying a pharmacist hooked on pills.
He jerked around and stumbled and relied on his spastic contortions and
idiotic hair to substitute for any semblance of humor.
MAN, I miss SCTV!

Richards did NOT do the pharmacist character. That was Mark Blankfield.
Richards characters include the little kid with the toy soldiers and Dick, the
stud

Unfair!

His characters (and Melanie Chartoff, and that comedienne who did
Valley-Girls before anyone else) were the best things on the show.

Usually Richards played a kid blowing up GI Joes.

Richards played a paranoid, albino-hating bigot (George Bargate) in one
of the funniest sketches I've ever seen, on the show "Fridays".

"We ought to kick the CRAP out of all those people who say they don't
CARE about the world! (gaining steam & screaming at top of lungs) THEY
SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO EEEAAATTT!!!"

There were occasional funny things on that show. I'm surprised that ABC
or somebody hasn't tried to run any kind of a special and capitalize on
the Larry David & Michael Richards presence.

I believe the comedienne who pioneered the Valley-girl character was
Gail Matthius, who was not on "Fridays" but on "SNL" during the 80-81
season.

Boy, has this thread taken a 180! I thought I was the only person with a
bad memory!

OK, from the top:

- The only Fishin' Musician shows I can remember are with the Tubes, Wendy
O. Williams/Plasmatics, and joe Walsh. The Boomtown Rats come to mind,
but I don't think they were actually the FM.

- Gil Fisher.
- The Fishin' Musician.
- "Willie Nelson-lookin' guy" kept putting them right back into the reeds.
- What's a "freshmouth" bass? Do you maybe mean a "smashmouth" bass?
- Sushi Girl.
- It was widely known throughout the industry that "Fridays" was a direct
competitor to SNL. They both came on at 11:30 PM on opposite channels.
SCTV didn't come on until 1:00 AM where I lived.
- Tubes lead singer is Fee Waybill.
- The Michael Richards character of the little boy was "Little Mister",
after what his mother would yell out the window at him. He also played
a very Kramer-like character, picking up women at the roller disco, the
weight room, restaurants, and other places. He was just as funny, IMO,
then as he is now. woman would ask him a question, and his pat response
was always, "Oh, yeah ..."
- Mark Blankfield played the hooked pharmacologist (TAKE-A-PILL!!).
- Gail Mathius played a Valley girl type on SNL during the "awful" years.
- Melanie Chartoff often played a sorority bimbo or beauty pageant queen.

Whew! we're back! Anyway, Gil and Wendy fished for wall-eyed pike. The Tubes
went for largemouth bass, and I can't remember Joe Walsh's flounder of choice.

But he did get a good laugh from Gil's statement that Joe was "the best thing
since pliers".

Trivia note: People in the Bay Area (the Tubes' home base) who didn't

Where did the SCTV guys get the idea for "Gil Fisher" anyway? Was
there a music show in Canada hosted by a staid outdoorsy type, or was it
just made up?

OK -- The Fishin' Musician episodes:

The Tubes -- fishin' for largemouth bass ; they went to the heart of
bigmouth country, Lake Jessel. Performed "Sushi Girl." Gil appeared
later in this episode to ask Guy if he wanted to go watch Steeler
highlights with him and the Tubes. Joe obviously being a big Steeler
fan.

Wendy O'Williams and the Plasmatics -- they went on a photo safari.
That's when you take little pictures there of animals instead of killing
'em. Performed "Doom Song."

Third World -- went antique shopping with Gil and his wife, Whitey.
Don't know name of song performed.

Carl Perkins -- The fishin' trip got derailed by a stop at a bar where
Gil got drunk and got beat up by "a little guy." Performed "Matchbox."

Jimmy Buffett -- Went fishin' in a hot air balloon. Performed "Slow Boat
to China."

Joe Walsh -- Went snipe hunting. Performed "I Can Play That Rock and
Roll All Nite."

The Boomtown Rats were on Farm Film Celebrity Blow-Up and the SCTV Movie
of the Week "Teacher's Pet." Not on The Fishin' Musician.

Fridays was not really in direct competition with SCTV or SNL. Fridays
came on opposite Johnny Carson and did overlap with SCTV, but the shows
were so wildly different that it didn't matter. SNL was on, obviously,
on Saturdays. Fridays was a rip-off of SNL and also a piece of shit.

The video where Fee Waybill exposes his penis is for "Sports Fans."

Thank you.

Ya, that was the Superman sketch with Bill Murray and Margot Kidder. He
had settled down and married Lois, and had a big beer gut. He invited a
bunch of his superhero friends over for a party; Akyroyd was the Flash,
and Belushi was the Incredible Hulk. They all asked Morris who the hell
he was, and he said, "Antman. Remember me?? I can shrink down to the size
of an ant, but keep the strength of a human." Akyroyd's response? "The
strength of a HUMAN??? Oooohhh, I'm scared!!"

I believe it was a hunting/fishing show hosted by an old guy with
a beard by the name of Red Fisher. It took place in the Scuttlebut Lodge
(as opposed to the Scuttlebug Lodge) where Red would show film clips of
recent expeditions he was on. It was one of those low budget shows
that was so dull to anyone who wasn't interested in hunting or fishing
that it just begged for a parody. The ultimate piece of evidence to
support my theory is that Red Fisher's nickname was "The Fishin' Magician"
because of his skill at catching fish, or telling tall tales back at the
lodge.
I suspect this show was also the inspiration for the Red Green
Show. If you take all the common elements of Red Green and The Fishin'
Musician (Gil Fisher + Red Green = Red Fisher!), and then remove the
intentionally funny parts, you get an idea of what the original show was
like. Now if I could just remember the title of that show...

Absolutely. The show was originally broadcasted on CTV. The show was
usually filmed in northern Ontario.

The way I remember it, it was advertised that Wendy O and the Plasmatics were
going to be fishing for walleyed pike, but when they were actually on, they went
on a photo safari because, as Wendy said, "I'm really not into violence at all,
Gil". And later in the show, the Plasmatics played a song that contained the
phrase, "Destroy the filthy hypocrites!"

This is a cool group! Other people who remember the stuff I stayed up to watch!

The Boomtown Rats were in a parady of TO SIR, WITH LOVE called
TEACHER'S PET with Eugene Levy doing a very good Ricardo Monteban.
Some other FISHIN' MUSICIAN guests were Jimmy Buffet and Carl Perkins.

because Gil can't really drive the boat very well.

More nitpicking! I'm sure it wasn't Gil driving the boat, it was his
assistant or fishing buddy that got them in the reeds (can't remember his
name, but i do remember Gil saying something like 'And then Johnny turned
the boat around and oh! Look at that...into the reeds again.)

I'm not sure if this was on FM or not, but I remember they were showing
the film of the trip, and Gil was in this bar, drunk, making fun of this
smaller guy and it turns out that the guy knew Kung Fu and beat him. And
all through the commentary of the film, Gil is saying things like 'Oh god.
No, I don't remember this.' and he ends up being really embarrased about
the whole thing. Very hazy memory on this, just remember it being funny
as hell :)
