If anything, it was the other way around. A lot of people on SNL were
originally from SCTV and I am pretty sure they were the first to have
a musical act in the show.

A lot of the SNL people worked on Second City, which is not the same
as SCTV, and I think Martin Short was the only member of SCTV who
jumped to SNL. When John Belushi left SNL after the 1978-79 season,
SNL tried in vain to get John Candy to replace Belushi. SNL had
musical acts, but SCTV incorporated the musical acts into the skits,
and often made the musicians act in the skits or play themselves.

way.

AFAIK, SNL never did that.

FWIW, SCTV came a year after SNL. I was young, but with both shows
since the beginning.

Do you know when SCTV premiered? My recollection is that by the time it
was syndicated in the United States, it had aired for two years. It makes
sense because the episodes were produced for occassional airing in the
beginning and it was not a weekly series until later.

I don't agree with TRS-80 that it was a knock off of Saturday Night Live.
They are hardly the first sketch troupe to get the idea to go into
television production. The comedy was rather different.

SNL started in the 1975-76 season, and the first season of SCTV was
1976-77 in Canada (and somebody will correct me if I am wrong) but it
was the following season 1977-78 that it was syndicated to US
television stations.

You're kidding, right? I can picture Paul Simon in a turkey costume,
and that's just for starters...

As well as a fellow named Justin Timberlake in a wide variety of skits and
costumes. Beyoncé...Jagger...many more...both as musical guests and main
guests.

Paul was actually the main guest, but they did feature Aerosmith (or
whatever musical guest) in a Wayne's World sketch.

There were a lot more than just Aerosmith. Mick Jagger did one way
before that. I'm sure there's some guy on the internet with OCD that
has a list of every time it happened, and I'm sure it's at least half
a dozen a season.

The main thing that keeps it from happening more often is that the
bands are on tour, making rehearsal hard unless they can get in before
Thursday night.
