Joe F. as Chuck Heston...whenever an "ALTERNATE PLAN" is needed at
work or whatever, I sometimes say "THE **ALTERNATE PLAN**".

ANd the cheesy speech at the end, perfect.

Dave Thomas's Bobby Duval was great.

Moranis: Gerry Todd.

Catherine O'Hara as Lola Heatherton in "Way to Go Woman!" dressed in a
sequined nun's habit, singing that bastard version of Steve Miller's
"The Joker," while Andrea Martin as Sister Theresa hoes away in the
garden.

This is a killer question, and because each cast member had so many
memorable moments, a lot of it depends on what you remember seeing last.
Anyhoo...

Eugene Levy--Bittman appearances on the Maudlin show, and every Earl
Camembert appearance.

John Candy-- Johnny LaRue in the Christmas ep. "Street Beef"

Martin Short--kid actor Rusty from "Stars in One"

Andrea Martin-- Mojo the maid in "Days of the Week"

Catherine O' Hara-- "Hi-Q" contestant...Margaret Meehan? Always buzzing in
before the question...

Rick Moranis-- Gerry Todd pieces (people who work in radio can always find
some extra humor in that bit...)

Dave Thomas-- Play it Again Bob and "Dialing for Dollars" with Walter
Cronkite

Joe Flaherty-- Guy Cabellero...always a riot. For some reason the "Sweeps
Week" thing as Gavin McLeod jumps out at me. That's such an odd little
thing, but like so many SCTV pieces it was brilliantly played and hard to
forget!

I recently looked at an "early years" piece showing the outtakes of a
Cornabix commercial..John and Joe were both hilarious in that as pro hockey
players ("I use a Gee Lafleur hockey stick. Hey Gee-how 'bout some
Cornabix?" God that's funny...even with a Pepsi-Cola reference that I have
never been able to figure out.)

Here in Quebec, I think the stereotypical French Canadian eats a "Joe Louis"

Bittman definitely. The best is when he's practically on his knees
watching when they cut back from showing a clip of his.

Agree again. And when he tries to get Bob and Doug to wash his limo.

For me it's Jackie Rogers Jr. all the way (particularly when he's
spotlighting his dad's ill-fated special "Swingin' with Mother Nature".)

Eugene Levy - Anything with Earl

Joe Flaherty - Anything w/ Guy, Vic Arpeggio (esp. 'Black Like Vic')

Pepsi is a rather derogatory term for a French Canadian. Could be due to
Pepsi consumption, though I have never heard a good explanation that goes

Oddly enough, the further east you drive in Canada, the more Pepsi signs you
see. Here in NL most folks drink Pepsi for example, rather than Coke.

I got this from http://www.icomm.ca/emily/

Pepsi, pepper
Derogatory terms for a Quebecer, used probably because of the great popularity
of Pepsi Cola in that province. Evidently Pepsi was much cheaper than Coke at
one point, and the Quebecers never stopped drinking it.

I agree, Reach For The Top was a common staple at my house. Kind of hard to
explain to an outsider. Hi-Q pretty much sums it up.

For sure my favourite Dave Thomas character was Red Rooster from the
3CP1 episode where he and Moranis had to fly their converted ambulance
into outer space. A quote I frequently use is "if you shoot a Russkie
on just the right angle you can blow his head CLEAN off!"

As for Hi-Q, it was good "Disconnect his buzzer", but Half Wits was
even funnier with no Reach for the Top knowledge necessary.
"Housewife and hopefully mother Alex" - the funniest thing Andrea
Martin ever said.

Joe Flaherty - so many great moments ... I'll take the crying husband
in "My Factory, My Self" ... there was something profound about that.
Joe's Rocco was awesome also. I think the best bet for an SCTV
Spinoff would have been "Rocco". His Jack Klugman impersonation was
also humorous to an extreme.

Dave Thomas - my other favorite cast member ... gotta go with his Doug
McKenzie. Some of Bill Needle's shows were funny to an extreme also -
"Starting Out With Bill Needle" and "Shoot for the Stars".

Eugene Levy - for me, it has to be the two "Max Lansky" call-in shows
during the Cinemax season. His Jack Carter impersonation was
hilarious to an extreme.

Catherine O'Hara - Lola Heatherton in the episode with her "Bouncin'
Back to You" show. You can see in that episode that she really does
have the best acting chops in the ensemble ... awesome performance,
beyond comedy.

John Candy - Johnny LaRue, particularly in the masterful "Dining With
LaRue" at the French restaurant.

Rick Moranis - got to go with Larry Siegel.

Andrea Martin - Her Linda Lavin was perfect.

Robin Duke - the Harvey's Bristol Creme commercial.

Tony Rosato - this guy did the ultimate Lou Costello.

John Hemphill - Happy Marsden.

Just to make a note, our "It's Academic" show in Cleveland was also known

Those shows are as much about meta memory (knowing the contents of your own
memory) as they are about knowledge. In my experience anyway. I was
(blowing my own horn) the guy on my team that answered about 50% of the
questions. In my case I would buzz knowing that I knew the answer, or that
I had a good guess, without actually having the answer present.

So, when the host asked 'What German general...' I knew that I would know
that one, waiting for a bit more info 'was the first SS...'
BUZZ

"Dave Brodbeck, South?"
Think for maybe half second
'Sepp Dietrich?'

Correct.

See being a WWII geek, I knew the first german SS general to command a
panzer army was Dietrich (a good trivia question). Now, at the time I did
not have his name ready, but I knew that I knew the answer.

Now, I did answer all my WWII questions that day in a German accent and we
did go into time killing mode, with m friend Brent and I putting on Margaret
Meehan voices. I distinctly remember Brent saying 'Spain' in a Meehan
voice. I said 'San Francisco' that way (these responses had nothing to do
with the Qs but they killed time and we were ahead). Best part of that was
Brent putting on his Dithers voice, covering the mic and saying 'San
Fransiske, did you drown en did you flew?'

Too many great characters to pick only one each.

> Andrea Martin - anything with Pirini

Libby Wolfson; Edna Boyle

> Eugene Levy - Anything with Earl in seasons 1-3

Rockin' Mel Slurp; Herschel, er I mean, Bobby Bittman; Stan Schmenge;

So many. Harry the guy with the snake on his face; William B.
Williams; Mrs. Falbo's assistant; Sue Bopper-Simpsom's boyfriend; Yosh
Schmenge; Stephen Seeley of "Pre-Teen World"; the guy Edna Boyle
married after Tex; Johnny LaRue, of course; Billy Sol Hurok.

> Martin Short - Bradley P. Allen *hahaha cough cough*

Rusty Von Retic of "Oh, That Rusty"; The host of "Stars at One",
(forgetting the character's name, Brian Linehan, maybe?); Troy Soren.

> Joe Flaherty - The crying guy in 'My Factory, My Self'

Vic Hedges and Vic Arpeggio; Rocco; Count Floyd, Sammy Maudlin.

> Dave Thomas - anything with Bill Needle

Bill Needle, Bob Hope.

That would be Dusty Towne. Dusty Rhodes is a professional wrestler.

Eugene Levy- Lots of good ones, but Rockin' Mel Slirrup stands out to
me.

John Candy- Johnny LaRue, of course, but William B. is right up there.

Catherine O'Hara- Her impersonation of Brooke Shields always made me
laugh.

Andrea Martin- Pirini. I find myself quoting her much more than I
should.

Joe Flaherty- I just love Count Floyd. It's so...so....scary.

Dave Thomas- Lin Ye Tang....."Is this box, in fact, hell?"

Rick Moranis-Merv..."We'll be right back"

Martin Short- The little kid in "Mean Joe Greene Playhouse"

Robin Duke-Lee Iacocca's daughter, who drinks trasmission fluid.

Tony Rosato-Marcello the chef

Harold Ramis- Moe Greene..."someone threw a rock through my dog..."

My favorite all-time sketch is the Queen Haters. I've shown this to
many many people, no one has failed to laugh.

Just about anybody I've show SCTV to has failed to laugh at it. They just
stare at the TV screen with that clueless look on their faces.

Hmm, maybe they're too young to get the reference. Then again, your average
Joe Idiot who thinks Funniest Home Videos is a hoot wouldn't get SCTV.

No, they're all older than me. Weird, huh?

Yep, there's no excuse for that.

I have to agree with some of the fine picks offered on this thread thus far,
and must also note that while so many performances by these masters will be
emblazoned in our minds as the classics they are, there is other equally
amazing material that slips under the radar and is more likely to be
forgotten in the haste to bring compilation material into a marketplace.

My choices for favorite performances seeks to honor those otherwise unsung
yet majestic moments from our great SCTV leaders:

John Candy, Cognac.

Martin Short, Brad Allen

Dave Thomas, Bill Needle

Andrea Martin, Libby Wolfson

Joe Flaherty, Sammy Maudlin

Catherine O'Hara, Dusty Towne

Eugene Levy, Sandler (or was it the other guy?), also from the "South Seas
Sinner" bit with John Candy as Cognac

Rick Moranis, Larry Siegel

I'm limiting myself to one pick for each, which was both difficult and
painful.
Thanks, all!

Stan

I can't even begin to answer this, I'd just end up listing nearly
every character everyone did.

But, just so it gets in the thread:

John Candy as Divine as Peter Pan
