Hi, Everyone. Please take the time to read this and discuss your
thoughts. I was a little kid during the golden age of Nickelodeon, the
mid to late '90s. There were several different shows of many different
varieties, and some awesome cartoons (i.e.- Rugrats, Hey Arnold). I
remember being very young when Spongebob promos began to run before it
started airing, and even at such a young age, I was interested in this
cartoon. Spongebob became one of my (and many other kids') favorite
cartoons. The fun, the adventure, creativity, and (as I got older) the
witty humor behind the dialogue kept me as a HUGE fan of the show. The
episodes were simple, basic, and easy to follow, but were so well-
written and creative that each episode was memorable for its own
reason. THIS was the show to watch in the late '90s and early 2000s.
Even some of my friends' parents would watch the show with us and get
genuine laughs throughout the episode. It was a show that definitely
was geared for kids, but its clever and witty humor (while not without
slapstick) appealed to anyone willing to give it a chance. Spongebob
was a universally enjoyed cartoon, and I'm not just saying this out of
nostalgia or ignorance, it really WAS that good and enjoyable for
anyone. With an interesting under-water setting to draw your
attention, the show really grabbed you with all the great characters
on the show. Each character had their own unique traits and hilarious
aspects that were appealing and enjoyable for anyone who watched the
show. On top of the cool settings and great characters was the
imagination that the show displayed. The show was so full of life,
creativity, and ideas that were funny and cool, much to our liking.
Spongebob was nearly a frenzy for kids and the adults who were willing
to give this awesome show a chance.
Then, finally, The Spongebob Squarepants Movie was released. The movie
was fun, humorous, and had the spirit of the series. I remember seeing
it in the theater and having a great time with it. When Spongebob came
back to TV, though, things were different very quickly. I learned that
the series' original writers had not been hired for the new season of
Spongebob, and I was curious as to how that would effect the show.
Unfortunately, the show slowly but surely became only fractionally as
good as it was in the previous seasons.
I could notice the complete change in direction for the show right
away. Spongebob's voice was a lot more high-pitched and squeaky, and
it wasn't for the better. The characters had been altered in ways that
weren't enjoyable, and the creativity was being wiped away. This
developed over the 7 years after the film's release into what
Spongebob is today, a zany show that apparently can cause ADD in young
children. Now, Spongebob himself is much more hard-headed, stubborn,
and annoying. Patrick got even more stupid (if that's possible), but
it is not necessarily funnier. Squidward basically cries now in every
episode, instead of at least being a confident loser. The plots of
newer episodes lack the simplicity of the classic episodes, and now
rely on pointless side-characters with uninteresting plots. Many of
the new episodes rely on loud noises or cheap humor for their laughs
as well.
With all that said, the newer episodes can occasionally get a chuckle
out of me, but I still laugh much louder at the older episodes. Sure,
Spongebob HAS been on TV for almost 13 years now, but the direction
they took with the characters and stories has become much less
creative, less fun, and less enjoyable. Its not impossible for the
series to go back to basics, and bring the show back to what made it
so great. The show still has the potential to be witty, clever, and
imaginative, but the difference is very evident to someone like me who
had been watching the show since its inception. Spongebob needs to get
its act together and become appealing to everyone again, the way it
started. If you REALLY want to see how much Nickelodeon has changed,
watch a Spongebob episode from 1999-2004, then watch a new episode
this coming season, you'll know right away.
PLEASE talk about this, I like to share opinions and talk about this
kind of stuff, but be respectful please.
