Hey, I figured this heading would get your attention.
Anyway, I just read an article about the teenage "virginity pledge" movement
that began in 1993. This is a movement in which young people make a public
pledge to delay having intercourse. Researchers claim this movement has helped
some teens in their resolve to delay sexual activity.
Switch to the young people of Roswell. What has been said about their, um,
status? I remember the scene with Liz and Maria saying either "Virgins!" or
"Frigid!" depending on your hearing of the exclamation. Do we know what their
status is, as well as Max, Michael, Kyle, Tess?
Alex seems to be fairly well defined as not having yet crossed the great
threshold yet. If Liz is a virgin then does this imply that Kyle is too since
they were a couple?
Isabel is also a question. She seems to always lack a boyfriend, but her
sexual history through Vilandra is quite, uh, vigorous. This of course would
not affect her current status but if she has any latent memories in her
thoughts (which can get to be quite vivid) she can wait and just run the tapes
for a while.
Tess seems quite capable of innuendo (the lamp) but does she just talk the talk
or does she walk the walk?
Has the status of their sexual experience deliberately been left vague to not
condone early sexual activity but also so they don't seem out-of-sync with a
world in which (sadly) many twelve-year-olds begin to act out what they see in
movies?
For you who make an answer - no fantasies allowed here. That's another thread!
Q
I clearly remember them saying "Virgins!" when they were discussing whether
Liz really did sleep with Kyle or not, then she asked her if she ever had
before.

Maria clearly said "Virgins!" along with Liz in (what?) "Max in the
City"(?). So I'm taking that as 'canon': both Liz and Maria are virgins,
as of "A Roswell Christmas Carol".
Of the rest:
Max - Um, if Liz is a virgin, Max *definitely* is. Based on the
earliest episodes of "Roswell", Max came off as exceedingly
shy. It truly seemed like his only friend was Michael (and
sister Isabel) in the enitre school! Not a recipe for sex.
So, Max = virgin.
Isabel - Potentially the most interesting and debatable case. Going on
the 'Isabel' of early "Roswell", it's easily conceiavble that
"Miss Popularity" would have had to put out to maintain her
'popular' status. But they backed off this portrayal subsequently,
and accentuated Isabel's strong need for family and real love, and
her unwillingness to be inimate (emotionally) with anyone except
perhaps Max and her mother. These latter character traits lean
strongly in the direction of Isabel being a 'Virgin Queen",
so to speak.
Alex - Duh! OK, yeah, sure, it's possible that Alex got 'lucky' one
year at summer camp. But I think Alex is too nerdy for that
to be believeable. 'Sides, his best friends Liz and Maria would
certainly have gotten it out of Alex if he'd lost his virginity.
So I say "Virgin!"
Kyle - Come on, did you *see* his date in "Heat Wave"?! Mr. Jock has a
rep. to maintain as well. Kyle? Definitely had some sex in the past.
Not a virgin.
Tess - The most ambiguous case. The Tess of "Crazy", TL&V and "Four Square"
was clearly capable of *anything*, and I don't put it past 14- or
15-year old Tess seducing humans (or even prostituting herself)
to get her way or to survive whatever recent mess Nasedo had
gotten them into. Her behavior around Kyle in "Ask Not" is
also very indicative of somebody who has a rather cavalier and
casual attitude about sex, which also implies probably
susbstantial sexual experience. But it's also true that Tess
is totally emotionally unavailable to anyone except Max (and,
now, possibly Kyle).
So, I strongly doubt Tess is a virgin. I also doubt she's ever
had sex with anybody she's really truly cared about. (Maybe Kyle,
or Max, will change that...)

I think I agree with Ian on all counts, but I couldn't find what he thinks

In Sexual Healing, when the Poddies' plan was for Max to go all the way or
really far with Liz to get some more visions and information, didn't he make
some comments about how this was his area of expertise - only not in those
words. It seemed to me like he had had experience in seducing girls before

low and "Chaka Kahn queued up." ;-)
I'm betting he's no virgin.

actually she was wearing a denim shirt on the couch (likely borrowed from Jim looking
at the fit). the jersey was in Kyle's room. and neither time was anything risque
showing.
and considering that we have seen maria's cleavage (in a bra) twice and Liz's twice.

I'm voting for "Frigid!" because (a) the wording wasn't clearer and (b)
because that's funnier, whereas the other is sorta pathetic.

I posted earlier about this. I was baffled by the suggestion that
Maria was a virgin, because if she and Michael aren't having sex, I
just don't understand how their relationship works.
I assume their standard arguments are code for Maria's complaining that
all they ever do is screw. But if they're not screwing ... than
Michael is being downright chivalrous ... and that just doesn't fit my
picture of their pairing.

I forgot about Michael. But as you backed my thoughts up, I'll back yours
up with Michael. ;)
The one wrinkle is exactly *who* Michael would hav had sex with previous
to the "Pilot". Some girl at school? Some woman at the trailer park? A
girl at a bar?
But, anyway, it's certainly possible, and would not be inconsistent with
Michael's characterization.

Liz, Maria, and Alex are all virgins. I personally believe they're all
waiting for 'the right one.'
Max and Isabel are virgins. Max is too damn shy and has been in love
with Liz since...what? third grade? Isabel is the Ice Princess and won't
let anyone on the outside really get close to her.
Michael could be a virgin. I'd say Michael is for the same reason Isabel
is but Michael grew up with a rough life. On a lonely night before
Maria came into his life and Hank was drunk on the couch, who knows what
could have happened? However, I'm gonna call this one a virgin.
Tess could be a virgin. However, she grew up with Nasedo and they
travelled often, and Tess also is not fond of humans. Therefore, who
would she be with?
Kyle is the one in question in my opinion. He's a popular football jock.
He's alone often and has to have something to preoccupy himself!
*laughs* I'm going to call this one not-a-virgin.
These are all my musings and opinions.
*Ashleigh*
I think Michael's a virgin... he broke up with Maria in Heat Wave because
"He never got that intense before", which is 2nd or 3rd base..
But there's something i don't understand:
In 285 South (episode 5, season 1), Maria fell off the motel bed on top of
Michael (who was sleeping on the floor) when Isabel, Liz and Max entered the
bedroom... so that let them suppose they were doing *something" together..
and Maria denied everything because it was an accident, and then Michael
said: "Come on honey we don't have to lie" and then Isabel said "Ok, i
believe you Maria, because when Michael comes someone *Honey* usually it's
all over"
so what is that supposed to mean?? that he's already had a relationship
before??
that is so un-michael-like..
thanks for any reply on this!
Come on, they started their relationship when they were 16... now they're 17
and i think they would've mentionned it... Jason Katims would have let us
suppose that there was a first time somewhere... And when their relationship
started, Michael ended it in the same episode thinking it was getting "too
intense" (so 2nd or 3rd base is intense according to him...) And in Sexual
Healing, Maria was yelling at Liz for having been a little too into the sex
thing...
Finally, in "a roswell xmas carol", Maria says to Liz : "So you're still a
virgin..
Liz: Yeah..
Maria: So am I !"
>I think Michael's a virgin... he broke up with Maria in Heat Wave because "He
never got that intense before", which is 2nd or 3rd base..
>
There are two ways at looking at what is "intense". One way is how far you
get, which base you can get to. But a person can get a home run
on the first try and this may not be "intense" if it's "just sex". This leads
to the second way of looking at it - intense meaning REAL affection and love
for someone. I don't think Michael ever felt real romantic love toward someone
until Maria came along.
Michael doesn't seem to "like" intense. That is, unless it's his own stirred
up emotions expressing themselves. He doesn't like "intense" in any way that
requires him to be emotionally involved. Michael is impulsive and intense in
his personality but not in his romantic relationships, at least not yet.
Q
> Finally, in "a roswell xmas carol", Maria says to Liz : "So you're still a
> virgin..
> Liz: Yeah..
> Maria: So am I !"
actually that was in Max in the City. but yes they did confirm that they are
both virgins.
that is part of the whole reason why Maria was pissed at Liz. Cause you don't
go and lose your virginity and then not tell your best friend, especially when
the whole rest of the school seems to know.
> Kyle is the one in question in my opinion. He's a popular football jock.

I disagree. Kyle might be an athlete but he was never the 'jock'
stereotype. He has always been a bit different than his friends. Any other
popular guy would have told Liz to kiss off for dissing him at the
Festival. they could just go find Vicky Delaney or some other cute chick.
And then there was the thing about him being mad at the guys for beating up
Max (he was just ranting it seems, he didn't mean for them to do something
like that) etc.
> I think Michael's a virgin... he broke up with Maria in Heat Wave because
> "He never got that intense before", which is 2nd or 3rd base..

I don't think that is the kind of intense that he was referring to. I think it
was his way of saying that he wasn't comfortable leaving someone in that fast.

this is exactly what it meant. the others walked in and Maria jumped to the
conclusion that they would assume that something would happen. So she starts
with the babbling. for fun, Michael teases her and pretends like something did
happen. but Isabel knew that it was un-Michael-like for him to use a word like
honey (it was like a secret way of him letting Isabel and Max knew that he was
joking)

That's all true, and I think Kyle really cared about Liz. But his date in
"Heat Wave" could very well be the type of girl Kyle was dating before Liz.
So, before Liz, I can easily imagine that Kyle got himself some sex. In
fact, I'm banking on it.
Ian (who thinks the odds of *all* 8 main teen "Roswell" characters being
virgins is too much of a long shot...)

The actual quote is a little different, and i think leads to a different
conclusion:
MICHAEL: Come on, honey, we don't have to lie.
(Maria gasps in disbelief and starts to hit Michael)
ISABEL: I believe you. The day Michael calls anybody honey, it's all over.
That comment sounds to me like Isabel knows that Michael has never called
anyone "honey" and she doubts it'll ever happen in her lifetime. (And does
anyone else find that line far more amusing now that we know former-Isabel
and former-Michael were engaged? Someday I would love to see a flashback
to what those two were like together. LOL.) As others have pointed out,
it's still possible that he could have had previous sexual experience
(though I doubt it); but Isabel's comment taken together with all the
examples we have of Michael fumbling with the "boyfriend" role strongly
suggests that Maria is his first experience with emotional involvement.

I agree. I know Roswell deals with aliens and some alien concepts but the idea
that all eight main (late) teen characters (with very mature bodies and gushing
hormones) are still virgins is way TOO alien. Also culturally dishonest for
today (not a moral judgment but one based in present reality).
Q
>*sighs* here I go...
Me too.

>waiting for 'the right one.'
Liz and Maria are virgins by choice so far. They "aren't ready." And when
they are ready, it will be for love only... Alex is a virgin, IMHO, because of
lack of opportunity, being hung up on the Ice Queen and all. If Alex got the
chance, I'm betting he'd go for it.
>Max and Isabel are virgins. Max is too damn shy and has been in love

>let anyone on the outside really get close to her.
Agreed. Max is the kind of character that is waiting for "the right one" to
come along, in his case, being Liz. Isabel is a virgin because she is too
afraid to get close to anyone.
>Michael could be a virgin. I'd say Michael is for the same reason Isabel
>is but Michael grew up with a rough life. On a lonely night before

Michael is a hard one to call. But I'm betting virgin. It doesn't look like
he was involved with anyone prior to Maria. Since they haven't slept together,
and Michael was only 16 when they got together, I'm thinking he never really
had the opportunity prior. So, I'll call him a virgin too.
>Tess could be a virgin. However, she grew up with Nasedo and they
>travelled often, and Tess also is not fond of humans. Therefore, who
>would she be with?
Tess said in TLV that she'd never had a boyfriend. I think that she was
holding out emotionally for Max, whom she was told all her formative years was
her "destiny". I don't believe that a girl who grows up believing she's a
queen-to-be is going to sleep around prior to meeting her king. Chalk up
another vigin.
>Kyle is the one in question in my opinion. He's a popular football jock.
>He's alone often and has to have something to preoccupy himself!
>*laughs* I'm going to call this one not-a-virgin.
I agree that Kyle is the most likely to be a non-virgin. However, we know he
only got to "second base" with Liz. His hot and heavy date in Heat Wave got
interrupted, by Liz and Max ;-).. We know he hasn't been doing any dating this
year.. (His father mentioned that in Wipeout...) So, there's plenty of
opportunity for Kyle to still be a virgin.
>These are all my musings and opinions.
My opinion is that all 8 are virgins. Not necessarily because it's realistic,
but for political correctness reasons.

Ah, I changed tense halfway through my post. I started off in past and
ended in present. I should have made clearer: "I *assumed* their
standard arguments are code." I'm not at this point arguing that Maria
is lying and that she's actually had sex with Michael; simply
explaining why it was surprising to me when it was made explicit (the
denial, not the sex!).

"Frigid" refers to a woman who does not want or cannot experience sexual
pleasure. For these women, "does not want" *maybe,* but "cannot
experience" well, we don't know do we?
I say maybe because you *know* if Max or Michael would actually commit to
emotional involvement they'd er, fall into their arms in a *second.*
Have to agree there. There isn't even the "got drunk and did it by accident"
clause as he had never been drunk before "Blind Date".

I'm not too sure about this one, she could well have slept with people in
her early days at high school, as many girls do, to work her way up the
social ladder. Unlikely with the character she has developed now, but the
Isabel of the pilot quite probably, so we can only guess.

Most definitely not a virgin. Come on...! What red-blooded guy would refuse

"Heatwave"

Quite possible that she isn't a virgin. But it doesn't take actual sexual
experience for a person to be cavalier about sex. All it takes is
confidence. Judging by her life with Nasedo, and the way destiny seems to
have been drilled into her, I would guess that she is still a virgin. But
that she's very confident about her sexuality
Michael - Most likely still a virgin. He seems to have charm, but I'm not
sure that before the shooting he would have even spoken to most people,
still won't, let alone sleep with them. Despite his "getting intense" with
Maria, if she's still a virgin, then he probably is too.

Sorry about the grammar it's after midnight and all grammar and spelling
knowledge leaves my head.
The characters and story lines have been strong enough that the show hasn't
devolved into a soap-opera-style sexual escape showcase. Sort
of like the way sex used to be portrayed in movies - much more can be done with
the suggestion of sex or ambiguity about the sex than just
putting it out there.
But sooner or later a more explicit dealing with sex will probably be
necessary. A character/relationship-driven show cannot avoid weaving this
issue more directly into the story forever. Particularly with the "teens"
moving fully into adulthood. Not to mention the "soulmate" pairings and
relationship desires so central to each character.
Who's gonna be the "first" Roswell character or couple that gets some hot and
heavy screen action?
Q
My bet's on Kyle and Tess, followed by Michael and Maria.
Max still had the whole Kyle/Liz thing in his head and, though I'm sure Alex
wouldn't say no, I don't think Alex and Isabel will get together in that way

Probably yeah.
Political correctness and all...
I personally think all the 8 teen characters are virgins, and here's why:
Max - too shy, hung up on liz, hung up on liz, hung up on liz..
Liz - explicitly stated (several times)
Michael - loner, doesn't trust humans, never been a bf before Maria
Maria - she freaked when she thought liz didn't tell her about losing her
viginity and felt it an affront to best-friend-ness, thereby impying that she
would've told liz if she and mikey did it
Isabel - popular, (but in a shallow, no real relationships kind of way), into
family, a "waiting for the one" type
Alex - uhh, unless he did it in on vacation with his new long-distance
chickie... doubtful.
Tess - trained to be a loner, untrusting of humans, taught to remember her bond
and be loyal to her King and cause
Kyle - I don't think he's exactly Rico Suave just because he's a football
player.. remember how (heh) stiff he was when he had to be in bed with Liz? (I
mean AWKWARD, ok peoples?!).. Plus his Dad chided him once for not dating
anyone, remember? .. Plus, he's got Tess in the house and can't keep his eyes
off the tv for God's sakes?! She's made it clear she enjoys his advances so...
he hasn't even tried to lay a smooch on her or anything?! What's up with this
kid? His dad has a more raging libido than him!
BTW - Jim and Amy are my pick for 1st couple to do it on Roswell.

Not if you are my age. I learned relatively early (like more than 40 years
ago) that they guys doing all the talking are the guys reading about it -
and any newly married person from that day & age could tell you that reading
about it was nothing at all like doing it.
> Would they write it that way anyway?
Sure they would. It's good.
> Probably yeah.

The very antithesis of political correctness - the be politically correct,
everyone from the age of 12 or so screws like bunnies without a thought to
consequence, because it feels good.

You're right, I am certain.

Also lacks an example of any potential result. One fic speculated that when
Isabel and Alex finally got it on, Izzy drained all his energy and he died.
I'm sure he died happy - but he was still dead. Max doesn't want anything
like that to happen.
> Liz - explicitly stated (several times)
The archetype of all the girls that we wanted to marry in my youth -
innocent and lusty.

Selfdoubters tend to wait a LONG time - performance anxiety is a real
bitchandahalf!

Maria is a contradiction in terms - flaky, but with high ideals, and a
feeling for her own worth; also self-critical, and not interested in an
investment on which there can be no return.

Yea, verily....

He might've - if the real Alex was eaten and replaced by a Skin....

bond

"Trained" being the operant term here. if she ever decides to do her own
thinking (which she appears now to be doing, having been "rescued" from the
alien Nasedo and gradually acclimating to the hated humanness, and
discovering that she likes it....) she'd probably be like a mink with its
tail on fire....

Kyle is at least as full of self-doubt as Max - in many ways they're the
same side of a one-sided coin (a buddhist concept if ever there was one....)
> BTW - Jim and Amy are my pick for 1st couple to do it on Roswell.
> Ha Ha Ha Ha Haaa!!
Too late. They've already done it.
I'm still betting on Kyle and Maria as half-sibs....

About the whole 8 virgins being unrealisitic issue.
I think more ppl TALK about doing it than really DO it at that age.
(If I can recall that far back!)
The ones who do are naturally the more outgoing ones, more vocal, more
self-assured, etc. so they are the ones who we HEAR from/about, making it seem
like "most" teens are f---ing like wild bunnies. but I still believe there are
alot more virgins in high school than it SEEMS as though there are...
(In ROSWELL particularly, I stand by my position that all 8 of our teens
probably are. Due to the reasons stated 2 posts ago.)

My predictions on how and where each of the Roswellians will "do it" the first
time:
Max and Liz - (standing) against the Granilith (mind flashes sparking small
fires inside the chamber).
Michael and Maria - (prone) back seat of the Jetta. This will be followed by
their needing to replace the bumper and the shocks.
Isabel and Grant - (whichever way Vilandra enjoyed it most) in Grants' room at
the Roswell Motel 6. They wait until next Christmas, she takes off her red
Santa suit and tells him to quit playing with his stones (remember, he's a
geologist!).
Kyle and Tess - (sitting) on a chair (hers). Then Kyle swears off sex forever
and takes a vow of celibacy. In a fit of rage, a devasted Tess incinerates the
earth.
Alex and his new Swedish girlfriend - in the lavatory of the jet on their way
back to Roswell. When they arrive, Alex dumps her for the new FBI agent.
Jim and Amy (for the second "first" time) - not sure how or where, but somehow
it will involve pie.
Q
THIS has some real potential.
Unfortunately now I think for Kyle, kissing Tess would be like kissing
his sister. Bummer for both of them.
ohhhhh, I don't think so. Those two have HOT chemistry. There are all kinds
of layers going on in that relationship. Friendship, lust, pain, need, fear.
Frankly, Kyle/Tess is, at the moment the main thing I'm watching the show for
:)
Laura
very true (i'm just coming out of that age heh heh)

yeah. there was this girl who basically would talk about sex like she was a
sailor...and everyone figured her to be this huge slut. She's 22 and still a
virgin lol
>but I still believe there are

exactly. I remember a lot of people lying about *not* being a virgin, which i
thought was kind of weird.

X-MEN/THE AVENGERS: THE GAMMA QUEST, Book Three
I would have pegged her as the one who already has... I can't remember the episode, season 1 for
sure, IIRC they were driving somewhere - but wasn't there a conversation with maria lecturing liz
about not doing anything she would regret, and then saying "trust me, i know" something like that,
anyway, i took that as she had - not nessecariliy with michael, and that she wasn't exactly proud of
herself for doing it.
