You are so right! Anyone see the Oprah show that promoted the first
interview with the entire cast of Roseanne on the show's set. Well,
what a let down! Sara Gilbert was not even there. Her absence was not
explained. When Oprah introduced Johnny Galecki, John Goodman asked
"Didn't your name used to be Kevin?" That question wasn't answered or
explained either. They should take Oprah's emmys away!
A personal favorite line thrown in for good measure:
Roseanne "This is not about Dan loving his mother, okay. You can still
love your mother even though you know she is a crazy old shrew!"
Bev "Don't think I can't read between those lines Roseanne."
Yep.

Johnny Galecki explained this in an interview. Apparently, he was
working on another sitcom at the time. When "Roseanne" asked him
to return as a continuing character, the producers of the other show
jokingly agreed to allow it only if his character would change his name
to David.
The show has made occasional references to this switch. At one point,
referring to how much control Darlene has over the relationship,
Roseanne says to Dan, "David isn't even his real name! She made that up!"
Robyn
who has way too much Roseanne trivia stuck in her brain cells
I remember an episode in which they were discussing either what a
doormat David was or what a bossy type Darlene was, and Roseanne
exclaims "His name isn't even David! Darlene (just calls him
that/named him that)!"
YES -- I recently saw that "Kevin" episode. That was much earlier in
Becky and Mark's courtship. I guess when they decided later to add the
character, they didn't like the name Kevin.

Either I've been having blackouts that eliminate Roseanne episodes, or
you're taking hallucinogens that create them. :)
Robyn
wondering if Kate can come up with anything to explain Darlene's
new pod person personality.
As far as Darlene's "change," have you remained exactly the same for eight
years? She's been at college, exposed to more, she's older... let your
children grow up, y'know?

that Kate's "babysitting" episode never existed:

I didn't disagree that David was introduced as Kevin. I was teasing Kate
for having such superb recall of an (imaginary) episode in which the name
change was fully explained.
As many people, including me, have noted, Johnny Galecki was indeed
introduced as Kevin. Specifically, in the tag to an episode about bowling,
Roseanne and Dan come home to find "Kevin" babysitting for D.J. after
Mark and Becky took off for a date. Darlene enters, meets "Kevin,"
and they bond over each having detention and "out-of-control" hair. Dan
thinks it's nice that Darlene is making a new friend until Roseanne tells
him "Kevin" is Mark's brother, at which point he whisks him out of the
house.
Some weeks later, Johnny Galecki has returned as Darlene's platonic
friend. They're drawing comic books together and now his name is David.
The only on-camera reference ever made to his original name came some
years later, when Roseanne was talking to Dan about how much control
Darlene has over the relationship: "You know, David isn't even his real
name! She made that up!"
Maybe this will end the thread, but I doubt it. :)

You shouldn't get so short with people. Especially when they're right
and you're wrong. I have a distinct memory of the "I don't like the
name Kevin" episode.

Thank you Debbie!! I was going crazy trying to remember the other show
that
had a girl give a boy a different name. It was Rudy on Cosby. Cosby used
to
be shown every night after the news but now Roseanne is. (Thank
goodness!!!)
Thanks,

I think everyone agrees that the first time Mark's brother appeared on
the show he was named Kevin and I think everyone agrees that Kevin was
played by the same actor who plays David. I think the confusion (or
disagreement) concerns the circumstances or storyline from
Kevin/David's first appearance -- whether that was the babysitting
episode and whether it was Darlene who named Kevin David. Personally,
I don't remember Darlene doing that, and I think I would have
remembered it since I remembered the similar storyline on the Cosby
Show.
Also -- in response to some of the earlier posings -- how was Darlene
able to convince Kevin's mother to call him David? We met David's
mother on the episode when David came to live with the Connors.
David's mother was getting ready to move them to another city and
Darlene wanted David to move in. Roseanne and Dan said no -- until
Roseanne met David's mother and saw how she treated him. If I remember
correctly, David's mother called him David, not Kevin.

ROBYN, You are absolutly correct: in that is what happened and the only
time they made a reference to the name change!
MY 2 CENTS WORTH!

I haven't been checking up on postings here for awhile, so I apologize for
not defending my position earlier. However, there is NO WAY Darlene did
not tell "Kevin" that she didn't like that name, and she was going to call
him David from now on. I remember it perfectly, and it is of a piece with
many of their other conversations about whether Darlene or David would get
their way in the course of the relationship, wherein Darlene always gets
her way. I admit that I confused things by mixing up that conversation
with an earlier, unrelated episode that explains how they originally met,
but I know they had this conversation.
Why does Kevin's mom call Kevin David? First of all, I think I remember
her calling him Kevin (but not as certain about this as I am about Darlene
changing his name -- after all, Kevin and David sound vaguely the same),
and secondly: writers screwed up or Roseanne wanted to screw with the
narrative logic (something, a la the two Beckys, she does all the time,
just as an allusion to the two Darrens in Bewitched and other tv sitcom
confusions).
If you haven't seen the name change ep, I would say to you: Have you seen
the first ep, where DJ is played by someone other than Micheal
Whatshisname? No? Well, that's because this show has been on the air so
long, and sometimes runs in syndication in two slots at a time (say 6:00
and 11:30 pm) that you can think you've seen an entire season, but
actually, you've missed one or two episodes. Even if you watched every
week from the moment the show went on the air, isn't there a chance that
you got caught in traffic and missed an ep, and then forgot about it by
the time reruns started in the summer (or maybe it wasn't repeated), and
just by chance haven't seen every episode there is? I started watching
Roseanne in syndication, and watched it 2, sometimes 3 times a night,
every weeknight for going on four years in 3 different cities, and even
now I sometimes see an ep (usually an early one) I've never seen before.
Kate
I agree that Darlene liked to control David, but the Kevin thing would
have to have occurred the very first time they met, because he was only
Kevin for one episode.
>Why does Kevin's mom call Kevin David? First of all, I think I

NO WAY did David's mother call him Kevin. I would be much more willing
to accept your certainty about that uncharacteristic
Darlene-changing-his-name thing. But David's mother definitely did not
call him Kevin, at least not in the episode where Roseanne agrees to
let David live with them after meeting David's mother. Was his mother
in any other episodes?

Yes -- the first episode (or was it the pilot) had someone else playing
DJ, they have shown that episode in Dallas many times. I think I have
seen every episode of Roseanne ever made (several times over, but not
in the last year). I think it's pretty neat that this topic has
generated so much discussion. Hopefully someone will let us all know
when this episode might air and those in that city can watch it and let
the rest of us know. Does anyone have a contact at a TV station or
with Roseanne's show who could help us settle this?
