In the preamble to the RF that shot of Jimbo in the grocery store
holding that frozen dinner...does anyone know what episode that belongs

I don't think it belongs to any episode, at least that I can recall.
Actually a lot of the clips from the theme are not from any episodes, at
least I think.

I wouldn't say that any of the scenes we see in the opening montage
are taken from any given episode, not to my knowledge anyhow. I could
be wrong. That did change though through the years when they started
showing clips of Beth, Dennis and Angel in the series of photos.

We're not going to rehash that debate whether or not Jim tossed it
back,...are we?

I hope not but then that subject seemed to get more of a response then just
about any other topic that has been posted.

It's funny you should pick out that particular clip. It's always been my
favorite single frame from the open as it captures perfectly just what Jim
Rockford's life is like. The obvious dismay on his face as he looks at the the
overpriced cut of beef says it all. It's not from any episode, but I do believe
that he *did* indeed purchase the meat (no, he DIDN'T toss it back!). Yep, he
bought it only to have Angel or Rocky raid his refrigerator and consume it
before he could! Such is the life of Rockfish.

BTW, there *was* an episode in which someone took Jim's steak, wasn't there?

I can't recall the episode, but I believe Rocky cooked up some nice prime
rib steak once. I think Jim went on to comment on how it would be cheaper
to hire a secretary than it would be for Rocky to tidy up his trailer. I
think Jim also asked Rocky if he knew how much the steak cost, and Rocky
replied,..."Hmm,..do I ever. I ain't no dummy". Funny scene.

Yes, that happened in "This Case Is Closed."

I agree that that shot does not come from any of the episodes. There seems to
be some disagreement in the above posts, however, as to whether the package in
question was a frozen dinner or a cut of beef. To me it looks like a frozen
dinner.

Could very well be a frozen dinner. Like I said though, it's the look on Jim's
face more than anything that made me think "overpriced meat". As far as what it
really is, it is hard to tell. In any case, that picture really does say a lot.

And I've always considered the Rockford show open to be among TV's best ever. I
love the use of still photos along with the way some are sequenced to give it a
kind of limited animation look. Much better than other series that use actual
scenes. And of course there's the added plus of different funny phone message
every episode as well as great theme music.

Two other favorite shots are the blurry pic of the Firebird, and right after
"the meat shot", that terrific portrait of Jim looking upward with Rocky in
the background smiling with pipe firmly clenched in his teeth. Someday I'm
going to make a print of that and have it framed. All it would need then is
James Garner's autograph.

BTW, upon further review, it does appear that Jim is indeed holding a TV dinner
in his *right* hand. In his left hand appears to be some packaged cut of meat.
The color and shape suggest that, so I guess we're both right. Perhaps that
"look" is his frustration over knowing he can afford the TV dinner but not the
steak. Oh well, please forgive my over analysis. I guess I really am a Rockford
Files Fanatic!

Anyway, thank the good lord for this newsgroup. It'll help get me through my
Rockford withdrawal once the show leaves TV Land. :-(

So, just WHEN is Universal releasing those DVD's?!

I am not sure I would be holding my breath on that one, at least for the
whole series. I am hoping as well but have this feeling they will do a few
to see what the response is and if there is enough response may make the
whole series available which would be great.

Hey, you're right. I never spotted that second item in his left hand before.
All I ever noticed was the frozen dinner in his right hand. The item in his
left hand could be a packaged cut of meat or another frozen dinner. I can't
tell from the brief, blurry glimpse we get of it. Another reason we need the
clarity of DVD for The Rockford Files: we need to find out what's in Jim's left
hand!

Absolutely! The point is Jim's humorous reaction to the items. (If that
supermarket is anything like the ones in my 'hood, he could also be reacting to
noticing the "expired-by" freshness date on the item has long since passed.)

> Oh well, please forgive my over analysis. I guess I really am a Rockford

This kind of detailed analysis of Rockford minutiae is lots of fun, IMHO. So
many other popular classic TV series have been so thoroughly analyzed to death,
it kind of wrings the life out of them. With some shows like Star Trek ,
hordes of fans have performed a detailed exegesis on every scene, frame, line
of dialogue, background prop, sound effect, etc etc to the point where there is
nothing new left to find and enjoy in the episodes...Decades of Trekkers have
written detailed books, fanzines and websites to ponder and share that
information.

With TRF there's plenty of unmined territory and lots of interesting details
that have never been discussed. When one of us finds something interesting we
never noticed before, chances are it hasn't already been discussed to death
somewhere previously and it'll make for an interesting discussion topic. This
is a good place to post it, because someone else will probably find it
interesting, too!

I thought that it looked either like a package of bacon with the window on the
front or some sort of frozen dinner, but not steak or ground beef.

Who knows why he had that facial expression, but like with many still photos they
tell
story and this one may never be answered.

I think that the shot of the 70's grocery store is particularly interesting, again
it's a shot--frozen moment in time and that's what makes it so interesting.

Besides, what other show would dare to have a grocery shot in the premable,
especially for
a P.I.? This again contributes to the humanly identifiable character that
Rockford is. Doesn't
everyone need to hit the grocery once in awhile?

P.S. I still say it's a package of Bacon.

I have two questions about the opening credits.

1. Who is the lady giving Jim directions and where is she directing him.?
2. Who is the babe in the bikini on the beach and why do they have to cut away
so quickly?

OK, so that's 4 questions. So sue me.

Glad you agree! As silly as it would sound to someone outside the ng, I really
do enjoy discussions like this. And it's great that we can do so without
suffering rude comments like "get a life". Everyone has to have an all-time
favorite show and being able to talk to others that share the same thing is
kinda fun. Now if only there was a way of putting together a Rockford Files
convention some day so we all could actually meet face to face.

I was once in a supermarket line behind a group of people wearing Star Fleet
Command uniforms or dressed as Klingons. Just to make conversation, I
complimented the woman in front of me on the "costumes." I got an icy stare
and I was curtly told that these were not costumes. Since I didn't know if she
had a real phaser, I apologized.

I've never been to a Star Trek convention but I'll bet it's not a fun crowd.

On the other hand, a Rockford convention would be a great group of people and
no "costumes" would be required.

By the way... I've read that the expression "Get a life" was first used by
William Shatner on Saturday Night Live. He played himself at a Star Trek
convention and he became dismayed by the Trekkies. His line when something
like this... "You... don't you have a job? And you... have you ever had a
girlfriend? What's the matter with you people? I mean, get a life!"

If I only had the answer to that one. How about the babe Jim laughs it up

I saw that Saturday Night Live convention sketch when it first aired live and
it was the first time *I'd* ever heard the "Get A Life!" expression. It seemed
to slip very quickly into the national vocabulary shortly thereafter.

The quotes you invoked do pretty accurately convey the sense of what William
Shatner says to the trek-nerds in the crowd.

Another quote I really like from the same sketch is when Shatner tells them:
"You've taken a nice little show that I did as a lark for a couple of years in
the 60's...and turned it into a colossal waste of time!"

I hope Rockford fans never get so obsessive about that show, that James Garner
ends up feeling the same way about us. Since most of us seem to have a sense
of fun and humor about TRF, I suspect that won't happen the way it did with
Star Trek.

Eddie Lasalle (The Attractive Nuisance).

Great question! Tough one to answer though. One time
appearance,...hmm. Okay, I'll go with someone who's relatively fresh
in my mind at the moment, as I just viewed this episode last night and
enjoyed it immensely.

Taylor Lacher (Charlie Strayhorn in "Heartaches of a Fool").

I think it was in "Irving the Explainer" - my favorite is the old
gray-haired guy who played the cinematographer. I remember Rockford finding
him being shot. Jim calls an ambulance and gets put on hold. Jim says
something like, "Try to rest." The guy replied, "No, it'd be a wrap."

This is the my favorite episode (I know I'll get flamed here). The best
line is Jim telling one of the Germans (who has him in a headlock), "Hey,
Willy, we know you're tough."

Happy New Year everyone!!! My wife and I are going to watch a TRF tape

I think we should wait a little bit. There may very well be some new
participants in the group once it starts airing on WGN. I don't know how
many places get WGN that don't get TVLand or vice versa, but perhaps there
will be some new viewers and new group participants once it starts airing on
WGN. It will also start airing on Deja View in Canada on Jan 6 as well so
that may also bring in some new group members.
