Well seeing as how it's been a little quiet of late, I thought I'd post a
few trivia questions.

1) While in prison, Jim worked up a debt to Gandy of $1,500. dollars. How
did this come about?

2) Name the episode where we hear this dialogue.
a) "See, his gun is deadly,...mine's in the cookie jar".
b) "the Fontaine brothers wouldn't know a doggy biscuit if it was stuck in
their ear".
c) "I told you man, I paint what I feel" Jim: "You must not feel well".

3) What was the Borlean Diamond supposedly worth?

4) Name 6 relatively well known *female* guest stars that have appeared in
at least two episodes.

5) Name the episode in which Jim stumbles into a Halloween party.

6) Off hand, I know of 3 episodes that Jim actually sits down and plays
cards with strangers (like a Maverick no doubt). Can you name the episodes?
(There could be more than three. I'm just winging it as I go along).

7) So how did Meagan eventually become blind?

The Borlund Diamond was worth 2 Million.

As far as Jim palying cards,

The Girl in the Bay City Boys Club

and I don't remember the others.
Better check with The Lemon.

Megan became blind when Patrick accidently fired a gun that shattered a window
Megan was standing on the other side of. As memory serves.

OK, another one for sure is "This Case Is Closed" with Joseph Cotten.
He's in New Jersey somewhere and the Lieutenant busts him...

In "There's one in Every Port", Joan Van Ark talks to Jim about being a
good card player --- yeah!, that's another one! Jim got in the card game
and it was robbed.

So there's two more, I'll think about if there's any others...

There's at least one more time where card-playing is referenced (but not
seen, and therefore doesn't entirely fit the trivia question). I LOL'ed
when I remembered it, I'll bet you will too...

I think this is out of "White on White and Nearly Perfect", in
Rockford's trailer, talking to Rocky. He gets and/or holds a carton of
milk in his hand.

Of course, one person's idea of 'relatively well-known' might be someone else's

Lindsay Wagner
Mary Frann
Kate Woodville
Rita Moreno
Kathryn Harrold
Joan Van Argghhh

The line about Angel hitting a cop from the first Lance White episode has
always puzzled me. Is it supposed to be Angel Martin the famous coward? The
one who told Del Caine that he would lead him right to Rockford because he knew
all the places he goes. And how about the time he told Chet Sierra to kill
Rockford but leave himself alive so he would be around to tell everyone how you
don't mess with Chet Sierra. And then there was the time, well I guess I could
go on and on. Maybe its a different Angel who hit the cop. I don't think
Angel would have the courage to take on a five year old in a fight.

I took it more as "Angel hit (on) a cop", as in Angel brought in a cop
to the card game. I didn't take the line literally but then again, that
doesn't make my interpretation correct...

Another card game referenced but not seen -- in the episode "In Hazard",

In addition to the Rockford Gals mentioned so far, we should probably also
mention Julie Parrish. I think all of her scenes from "The Man Who Saw The
Alligators" were edited out for the 60-minute syndicated version, but she is in
the longer version. She's also in "Lions, Tigers, Monkeys and Dogs."

She's probably better-known than some of the actresses I originally listed, as
the Elvis Presley movie buffs and Star Trek cultists are both especially aware
of her.

Regarding Angel's fighting skills, isn't there an episode in which Angel helps
Jim clobber the goons who have come into Jim's trailer and afterward Jim tells
him something like: " Hey, Angel, I didn't think you had it in you!" I think
even Angel Martin, when properly motivated, will fight back.

Now you both have me on this one. I remember the dialogue, but can't place
the scene. I thought it took place inside of Jim's trailer, but can't say
for sure. Didn't Angel follow up Jim's line with, "I want to go home", or
am I confusing scenes here? Aaagh! That's trivia for you.

There was the scene in the hotel room where Angel tries to get the Rita

Rita gets shot as she jumps in front of Jim (taking a bullet meant for

something, knocking the pimp out.

Didn't Jim admonish him for telling the pimp he (angel) had $1,000 on

Whoa, caught me off guard here. Very interesting, as I never noticed that.
I guess I'll have to view this episode sometime this week to figure what
brand of jeans they were actually planning on going with. Do you know the
reasons why they made that change?

BroncBusters were indeed the jeans in question.

Sometimes you can figure it out based on lip movement and such -- for
instance, in Profit and Loss the people were saying "Financial Dynamics"
as opposed to "Fiscal Dynamics".

The trouble with "A Material Difference" is that you can tell that the
dialog got changed, but from what is impossible. I had no clue. Watch
the episode, study it, and see if you can tell. I have. Can't tell. I
only know through Rob.

And why? I have an idea but everyone I mention it to says I'm wrong. So
I don't know...

I'm leaving the name of the jeans out of this email in case you wanna
check out the episode if you have it taped...

Other overdub episodes (off the top of my head)

Profit and Loss (as noted)
Only Rock And Roll Will Never Die
Nice Guys Finish Dead
A Material Difference

I think there are others but I can't remember 'em right now...

Although it doesn't really qualify as an overdub, the same lip-reading
principle occurs in "The Becker Connection," which I believe should be on
TVLand in a few days.

After Jim has been talking on the kitchen's trailer phone to Angel, Jim returns
his attention to the egg he was frying when Angel called. Jim sees the pan's
contents are now a singed, congealed mess and he appears to mouth the words
"Aw, shit!" The words aren't actually heard on the soundtrack and weren't in
the Closed-Captioning of TNN's version, but it seems pretty obvious what he's
saying.

Another thing similar to this that I have noticed in many episodes is the
dialogue being re-done in post-production. You can tell pretty easily
because the change isn't very seamless. For example, Jim will be on the
beach having a fairly long conversation with someone. Jim's voice will
sound a bit different in several lines of dialogue than it sounded in the
rest of the scene.

I assume this is done because the sound got screwed up in the original
dialogue and had to be cleaned up later. You don't notice this happening in
current television series. The technology must have improved dramatically
since TRF.

Yep, it's pretty easy to tell.

In one case, in Nice Guys Finish Dead, it's not even James Garner's
voice doing the voiceover!

Well, curiousity got the better of me so I had to throw this episode on
tonight. Bill, it is clear that BroncBusters are not mentioned at all in
the original dialogue. However, trying to determine exactly what brand of
jeans they were naming at the time proved to be a task on its own. Jim
visibly worded it twice, and then there was the Navy commander who mentioned
it, but I still couldn't figure it out. It looked as though he started out
by saying "blue",....something or another.

They must have decided on the name change halfway through the episode, as
towards the end, they purposely show the "BroncBusters Corp" sign outside
their offices. Or could that have been thrown in just prior to release?
What I don't understand, is why the name change to begin with? In any case,
what a great episode.

For starters, the original name was "Bushwackers".

Now, as to the sign -- I don't remember the scene where they show it but
you could handle it a number of ways. You could superimpose lettering
over the original shot. If it's a close up of the sign itself, you could
do that at any time. I do remember the navy guy in the police station
picking up a business card. When you cut in close (different shot!),
it's BroncBusters. That close up was clearly added in later.

Hah! Then it was "Carpenter", singular.

Here are the answers to the last set of questions.

1) Macy's Department Store. At the time when I posted this, I was
about 99% sure, but then Bill came back with a different response so
that threw me off. I did however check the episode last night to make
sure.

2) Carpenters

3a) "The Kirkoff Case" and "Return To The 38th Parallel".
3b) Salvatore and Tristan

4) "To Protect & Serve" and "Guilt"

5) Romanov

6) "With The French Heel Back, Can The Nehru Jacket Be Far Behind"

7) Thomas Tyler

8) BroncBusters

9) Deckers Point

Good going everyone, and thanks for participating. I'm working on
some others that might be a little easier.
