Who played Joseph Rockford in the first year ( it may have only been the
pilot ) and why was he dropped? I suspect that it was due to the fact that he
was not very charismatic at all.

Robert Donley, eh? Every time I see that episode, I swear the
original Rocky is a dead ringer for the old country singer "Boxcar
Willie" whose recordings used to be hawked on late night TV.....
anybody else see the resemblance?

His name was Robert Donley.

He only stared in the series premier movie. In the book by Ed Robertson
(The Rockford Files) its stated that Meta Rosenberg had wanted to cast
Noah Berry from the beginning, but that he was playing on another series
when the pilot to the Rockford Files was shot. By the time the network
ordered The Rockford Files as a series, Noah was free (the other series,
Doc Elliot, had been canceled).

i only recently started watching rockford. today must have watched part one of
the pilot because there was adifferent rocky... he isn't half as cool as the
second rocky. I don't know much about Rockford yet but everyday at 3:00 up in
Boston he's on and being prsently unemployed ive a new reason to get out bed by
three. I know now that it was the pilot... but the old rocky was lame I can't
imagine him getting tied up by the baddies at all. ROCKFORD!!!

I live in he Boston area as well, and I saw that episode last week. I
think they cut off the end of it, because it's supposed to be a
90-minute show from what I have read. What was up with that Rocky,
anyway? Rockford all the way, man!!!

An actor by the name of Robert Donley
played "Rocky" in the pilot because Noah
Beery Jr. who they wanted for the part was
tied up on another show "Doc Elliott"
That show was cancelled and Rockford had
sold as a series and "Pidge" Noah Beery
was available.
