Desire for a newsgroup related to Series VIII of Red Dwarf *ONLY* has
been desired to protect the intrests of fans around the world who
won't see Series8 for a while.
A full listing of the details will be sent to alt.config later.
For your newsgroups file:
alt.tv.red-dwarf.series8 Discussion for Series VIII of Red Dwarf
Charter:
Posting will be for all discussion of Series VIII that will be
seperated from the main RD newsgroup to protect the world-wide fans.
This split from the normal group will benefit and protect the non-uk
people from an excedingly high amount of traffic that they would only
delete.
Moderation would not be used.
Reviews, previews, news and ideas would be encouraged.
alt.tv.red-dwarf has around 100 posts per day and often rises higher
if a debate or intresting point is made.
Thank you.

Look! I can be pointless too!
BTW, everyone e-mail your ISP admin peeps (he...@isp.net) or find out
what your newsgroup admin e-mail is (newsg...@u-net.net for me) and
ask them to add the newsgroup and put some reason or not.
That's if you want too :)
-Tafka-
Umm...
I think this is a very bad idea - we have enough empty RD groups (like
alt.tv.red-dwarf.discussion, etc) - to create more is pointless, and an
abuse of Usenet. Did you propose it in alt.config?
You have to see the big picture - in five years, atvrd.series8 will be
another empty group in the hundreds of misguidedly created groups, and
people will say "What was the point of that?"
And you should at least have given it the right name - alt.tv.red-
dwarf.no-spoilers would be much more appropriate - what if RD doesn't end
at the end of series 8, will you create an alt.tv.red-dwarf.series9?
And look at all the other TV groups. ATVRD is the only one that I can
see with more than one spin-off group - why should we make more if the
current ones are empty? As for spoilers - how about uk.media.tv.red-
dwarf? That's how spoilers are usually avoided in other TV groups.
Of course, this post is probably pointless, I doubt it will be possible
to cancel the creation of the group, although if it wasn't proposed in
alt.config then it may get poor propogation. Nice one.

Innit. It'll have a life of close to a year I'd guess.
Abroad will get it later in the year and then we'll have the people
who missed it or something.
If there's been a long, long, long time without posting you can always
beg for it too be cancelled.
I dunno.

New star trek series and a new red dwarf series are *completely*
different. You're just being silly.
Anyway, with the amount of changes in-between series of RD people
would be upset knowing.

But not everyone is going to have access to the new group. What are
people going to do, see the new group there and think 'oh that's where
I should put my views on series 8!' No, they'll cross post. This group
will still get all the spoiler posts.
Why on earth it wasn't discussed on the newsgroup in the first place,
I don't know.
Good idea, I thought using alt.tv.red-dwarf.discussion, as it is unused might
be a good idea, but I suppose the separate name make sense.

At a guess, because there would be a thread about whether it would
be a good or bad thing that would last so long that they RD8 would have
been seen everywhere and therefore be redundant. Then the people who
said it was a bad thing [TM] would say I told you so.
But then I am being a cynic.

You'd rather it all came here and you ended up reading it?
Well done.

If you actually read what I wrote, you would see that I said, there is going
to be people that spoil it for others, and I am going to be one of those
people that spoil it!!!! Why should all those people that see Red Dwarf VIII
have to go somewhere else. If everyone that wants to talk about it say its a
spoiler first before giving anything away, then thats fine. But seriously,
you really think thats going to happen?

I tend to agree. I thought that's what spoilers were for. We make
this big amendment to the Primer, and now you want to abandon it? I
think spoilers worked well for Series VII, and I don't see why we
can't make it work for Series VIII.
You can create all the groups you want to for talk about the new
Series, but there will always be rogue posters who, if they haven't
been around long enough to know about the spoiler rules that apply
here, they will almost certainly be unaware of the fact that there has
been a new group created for the discussion of Series VIII.
If someone wants to say something about Series VIII, chances are
they'll just post here, as opposed to set out looking for a group
specifically created.
It's up to you if you want to create a new group, but I really don't
think it's going to accomplish anything. I think it's overkill and
pointless and won't "save" those of us that don't live in the UK from
sensitive Series VIII information. There will be those (as evidenced
in this thread by Obscure Delusions) that will continue to post Series
VIII material here, whether you make this new group or not.

Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up.
The best solution is for people who wish to talk about RD, or about RD'ers
without discussing series 8 is to use atvrd.discussion to avoid being
spoiled, and for people to try and use spoiler space as appropriate here.
Series 8 stuff is going to be posted here, and it is right that this is so.
Creating another group will not change this, all it will do is lead to a
proliferation of shouting and flaming of people who post "inappropriately".
People can cross post as needed.

A fine idea... in theory. The reality is that it is very difficult
to actually get alt.* newsgroups removed. They tend to remain,
cluttering up filesystems for aeons. Of course, if it didn't go
through alt.config it's unlikey that the group will get created by
many newsadmins anyway. If it did go through alt.config I'd
be very surprised if everyone there didn't shoot it down in a
large ball of flames like the dead duck it is.

I thought alt.tv.red-dwarf.discussion was to be a place where we can
go in search of non-spoiler dwarf chat. That's what's needed.

If you deliberately go against the primer, then you are liable to be
hit by a barrage of complaints to your ISP. During Series 7 one
account was shut down because of this. Why do you wish to antagonise
everyone? Red Dwarf is a light hearted comedy, lets keep the chat that
way. Use spoiler space.

Raz gave up on the Primer because no one seemed to pay it any
attention, too many people used it as fuel for arguments, and trying
to get an agreement on what should go into it was almost impossible.
The auto-posting stopped a good while back, now, and no one even
noticed. Given all that, what's the point?
If you do want to use a primer, though, why not make a new one from
scratch - or at least work out what to keep from the old one - instead
of just reposting it blindly and repeatedly?

I can see why that might be the case, but on balance it did much more
good than bad. Seems to me amending it didn't take that much agreement
anyway. Mostly Raz said 'is this OK?' and everyone promptly ignored
him.

I noticed. On the whole the level of 'messy' posts, tests, binaries
etc, has been at a good level, so I didn't feel the need to comment.
The approach of a new series probably means lots of new people, so
it's needed again.

Fair enough, can I have the latest copy of the old one? The primer was
one of the first things I read here and was very useful, it'd be sad

Everyone is welcome aboard starship atvrd.org
I think the RazPrimer is as good as a primer could be, what would be the
point in doing a new primer when there is only a slim chance it could be
anything other than inferior?
The main reason I didn't comment when Raz made suggestions/changes was I
don't like posting "I agree" without adding anything useful.
I'm a tad dissapointed he won't be keeping it going, when I asked Raz if
he would produce a new primer he seemed kinda agreeable, but you know
him far better than I do! ;O)
Like Lee, I found the primer a good intro to the group. I don't think
Cat had started mailing his welcome message at that point. Reading the
primer gave me lots of the useful info you need when you are a newbie
and gave me the impression the ng was a civilised place to hang out.
Going back to a discussion we had not so long ago about community, I
think every community needs some sort of primer, a kinda preemptive
strike against misbehaviour.
Out of all the documents the Internet Red Dwarf fan base has created, I
think the FAQ and the Primer are the most important. We need them.
--
> If you do want to use a primer, though, why not make a new one from

Actually, I've been thinking lately that the FAQ is really too big to be
auto-posted here in its entirety. And I've been mulling over the idea of
creating a sort of mini-FAQ, a kind of "Welcome to a.t.r.d!" thing, that
would serve as a pointer to the full-fledged FAQ on my Web site. It could
be auto-posted weekly without being too much of an annoyance, if it were
small enough.
Perhaps the Primer-type information could be incorporated into that.
Does that sound like a good idea?

I have said in the past that the FAQ should include questions
about this newsgroup and not just about the show. It is the

I think that sounds like a really good idea. Just a few basics - the most
faq's of the FAQ. Without going into huge detail. So it wouldn't intimidate
people right off the bat.
Very good. I would support that wholeheartedly.
Heather, thinking a little knowledge can be a good thing.
a good idea...

and having the primer added on, would make it bigger, and therefore
worse..
"Garth" - sheep.exe, watch a sheep wander around the screen.. fun.
and the rest on say on the second part, or, more easier, on the end of the
FAQ, a reference as to where the whole mujambo file is..
> Very good. I would support that wholeheartedly.
It is... and I do support it..
Carefull.. I know a song called "Whole-Hearted" and you don't want me to
sing that... not know anyway..
> Heather, thinking a little knowledge can be a good thing.
"The mind is a terrible thing to wast somebody with.." - Sledgehammer.
"Garth"
Sounds groovy to me :O)
>Actually, I've been thinking lately that the FAQ is really too big to be
>auto-posted here in its entirety.
No it's not. It's way smaller than a lot or USENET FAQs -- a good
number get posted in a number of parts because they're so large.
>creating a sort of mini-FAQ, a kind of "Welcome to a.t.r.d!" thing, that
>would serve as a pointer to the full-fledged FAQ on my Web site.
No, the full FAQ must be posted to the newsgroup. That's what
it is for - to be posted to the newsgroup. It might also be held on
a Web site, but it must not *exclusivle* live on a Web site.
You cannot assume that people can or want to go trotting off to
a Web site. Far better that the whole thing is delivered right
to their door. An X-header or fixed title enables people to make
use of killfiles or filter rules if they don't want to see it. Most
regulars will do just that, leaving only the newcomers to see it,
and they are precisely who it is most squarely aimed it.
>Perhaps the Primer-type information could be incorporated into that.
>Does that sound like a good idea?
Only if the additions are FAQs. "May I post binaries here? No." - OK.
"Don't call people names" - not OK.
It hasn't been posted fortnightly for over six months, and no one has
complained. Or even noticed.
I know y'all don't know me, but I did recently have a hell of a time finding
all that info! And ->smeg!<- I kept accidentally jumping back to the UseNet
FAQ etc!
Please take that advice!

Wrong on both counts.
Also wrong was your assumption that no-one noticed it's absence, when
I have copies of a post saying that I hadn't seen it for a while. If
you don't read everything that gets posted here, then stop making
these rash statements. :)
I look at the article headers here every day. If the FAQ is mentioned in
the header, I always read the article. I also generally read anything
about Series 8 or that seems to relate to news about the show. I don't
read every article, because the idle chatter, flames, and newsgroup
politics would drive me insane.
If you said that you hadn't seen the FAQ for a while in a thread about
something else, it's quite likely that I would have missed that article.
However, I believe that if anyone were seriously concerned about the FAQ's
posting frequency, they would send me e-mail about it. No one has.
ok... but why? I mean, searching for: "Red-Dwarf FAQ" shouldn't be that
hard, should it?

and do what with it?
[why I want to sing "big fat ass" by Joe Pesci, escapes me right now.]

I had always thought that the primer was more to do with this n.g and the FAQ
to do with RD itself.

try it. See how many matches you get and assume you've never seen any of
the UK stuff before. Now try it from the links given by members. It might
work a little better now that people have updated some things, but let me
assure you: to someone who's never looked for a primer before, it was hell!

Serve it with spam vindaloo?

Sorry, that's me. I evoke that response from people. Here - let me wedge
into these tight bluejeans. There, now you should want to sing the Barney
song. ; )-

Some of it's really funny (Bert and OJ) and some if it's really stupid
(Bert at Woodstock).
