What if they gave a class war and nobody came? CNBC reports the mildly
counterintuitive news that Barack Obama outpolled Mitt Romney in 8 of the
10 most prosperous American counties: "And his margin of victory in all
eight counties was greater than that of the national vote, in which Obama
was leading by 50 percent to 48 percent with 97 percent of precincts
reporting."
Nantucket, Mass., the richest of all (the rankings are by average annual
household income), went for Obama by 63% to 36%. Marin County, Calif.,
had the biggest margin of the 10, 74% to 22%. The two counties where
Romney finished ahead were both in New Jersey: Morris (55% to 44%) and
Hunterdon (59% to 40%). Except for one county in Colorado, all the others
on the list are in either the tristate area around New York or the
Virginia suburbs of Washington.
At the same time, exit poll data posted at CNN.com show that nationwide,
Romney did better with higher-income voters. Those who make $100,000 or
more a year preferred him over Obama, 54% to 44%; and those earning
$50,000 to $100,000 only slightly less, 52% to 46%. But Obama cleaned up
among those who earn less than $50,000 annually, 60% to Romney's 38%. So
Republicans are generally the party of the affluent and aspiring, even if
pockets of extreme wealth tend heavily Democratic.
