>Can anyone tell me if Lacey Chabert actually plays the violin?
Yes she really plays the violin. Lacey won a Star Saerch with the
violin, before she was on PO5.

Ah, that's good to know. I always thought it looked quite realistic
when she was playing the violin. (That is, the music seemed to
match her bowing and fingering. I would imagine it would be quite
difficult to teach someone who didn't play the violin to do handle
a violin in such a manner to look anything remotely like that person
was actually playing. It looks bad enough when people who don't really
play the piano are trying to look like they are really playing --
even when the camera doesn't show the person's fingers on the keyboard.)
The next question, then, is: Is the music we hear really that being
played by Lacey, or is it dubbed over? I would shudder to think of
the time it must take for her to practice her music along with doing
the show and going to school (or at least doing her schoolwork, if she
is privately tutored). In any case, it's clear that she knows the
music at least well enough to realistically look like she is playing it.

Watching the show, I find it hard to believe that she's really
playing. Having played the violin myself in the past, I can state for
sure that her bow strokes don't come close to matching the music. On
the other hand, I'm sure they aren't too worried about details such as
this on the show (how many will really notice?). She may very well be
a good violin player, but she just isn't playing it on the show.

I don't believe it is dubbed over. I do believe she is really playing
every last bit of it. I read somewhere that Lacy is quite the
accomplished musician.

Are you sure? I thought she won for singing? (I don't know about
this, though)

I AGREE!!!!!!!
I've played the violin since I was 5 (I am now 22), and
Lacey Chabert is *DEFINITELY NOT* playing the pieces on
the show. I find this incredibly annoying (b/c all the
homepages claim that she is), especially when they show
her "playing" at such great lengths when it is so clear
to anyone who has played that she is just going through
the motions. Neither her bowing nor her fingering make
it possible for her to be playing those pieces.
I like it pretty well when she is supposed to be playing,
and they don't go in for close-ups showing us that she
definitely is not playing. B/c then, I can enjoy whoever
is really playing w/o being annoyed.
(Side Note: Everyone, I am not usually this crabby; I'm
very sorry for the punchy tone of this e-mail.
I was supposed to have surgery last Friday,
but when I awoke from the anesthesia, the doc's
told me I had a bad reaction and they didn't
go through with it; and now I'm on a host of
medicines that make me very tactless/touchy.
I'm sorry, that was more than you wanted to know,
but I did not want you all to hate me!)
Much too wordy today,
Heidi

That's the fault of the editor(s), more than anyone else, really
- I liken it to rock videos. There's no shortage of rock videos out
there where you can see the guitarist playing things which can't be
heard, or are heard later (or earlier) in the song.

THANK YOU, Stephanie!
I feel so much better now that I know I'm not going
crazy (One would think that 17 years of playing the
violin would be enough to be able to tell when
someone isn't really playing the pieces).
Here's a Big Cyber-Hug!
Much happier now,
Heidi

Some people say she isn't playing the violin but according to Lacey in a
interview taken from an article in the USA Today last week she stated
that she has been taking Violin lessons the last two years ever since
she has been on the show.
