One Life to Live, the groundbreaking soap opera that ran for 45 years
on ABC and briefly online, may have ended its run in 2013, but its
legacy lives on in the hearts of its fans and the history of
television. The show, created by Agnes Nixon, was the first daytime
drama to feature ethnically and socioeconomically diverse characters
and to tackle social issues such as racism, drug addiction, AIDS, and
sexual assault1 It also boasted a talented cast of actors, many of
whom went on to achieve fame and success in other fields.

In this article, we will look back at some of the highlights of One
Life to Live, as well as catch up with some of the past cast members
and see what they are up to in 2024. We will also explore some of the
rumors and possibilities of a reunion or revival of the beloved show.

The Highlights of One Life to Live
One Life to Live was known for its innovative storytelling, which
often mixed realism with fantasy, humor with drama, and romance with
suspense. Some of the most memorable storylines and moments include:

The introduction of Victoria Lord (Erika Slezak), the central heroine
of the show, who suffered from dissociative identity disorder and had
multiple personalities, such as Niki Smith, Jean Randolph, and Tori
Lord. Slezak won a record six Daytime Emmy Awards for her portrayal of
Viki and her alters

The love triangle between Viki, her husband Joe Riley (Lee Patterson),
and her half-sister Tina Clayton (Andrea Evans), which culminated in
Tina s infamous plunge over the Iguazu Falls in 1987

The arrival of Dorian Lord (Robin Strasser), Viki s arch-nemesis and
former sister-in-law, who schemed, lied, and manipulated her way to
power and wealth, but also showed vulnerability and compassion at
times. Strasser won an Emmy for her role in 1982 and became one of the
most iconic villains in soap history

The saga of the Buchanan family, led by the patriarch Asa Buchanan
(Philip Carey), a ruthless tycoon who had a soft spot for his sons
Clint (Clint Ritchie, later Jerry verDorn), Bo (Robert S. Woods), and
Cord (John Loprieno), and his grandchildren. The Buchanans often
clashed with the Lords, the Rappaports, and the Mannings, among
others

The romance between Bo and Nora Buchanan (Hillary B. Smith), a witty
and charming couple who faced many obstacles, such as Bo s
presumed-dead wife Sarah (Jensen Buchanan), Nora s affair with Bo s
brother Sam (Laurence Lau, later Kale Browne), and Nora s rape by Todd
Manning (Roger Howarth, later Trevor St. John). Smith won an Emmy for
her role in 1994

The emergence of Todd Manning, who started as a rapist and a villain,
but later became a complex anti-hero and a fan favorite. Todd was
involved in many controversial and dramatic storylines, such as his
redemption and romance with Blair Cramer (Kassie DePaiva), his rivalry
with his twin brother Victor Lord Jr. (also played by Howarth and St.
John), and his search for his long-lost daughter Starr Manning
(Kristen Alderson)

The introduction of the Cramer family, a clan of strong and feisty
women who were related to Dorian and often supported or betrayed each
other. The most prominent Cramers were Blair, Kelly (Gina Tognoni,
later Heather Tom), Cassie (Laura Bonarrigo, later Cusi Crampton), and
Adriana (Melissa Fumero)

The diversity and representation of the show, which featured
characters of different races, ethnicities, religions, sexual
orientations, and social classes. Some of the notable examples are
Carla Gray (Ellen Holly), a black woman who passed as white in the
1960s; Ed Hall (Al Freeman Jr.), the first black mayor of a soap opera
town; Antonio Vega (Kamar de los Reyes), a Latino cop who struggled
with his identity; Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) and Oliver Fish (Scott
Evans), a gay couple who had a baby with Stacy Morasco (Crystal Hunt);
and Destiny Evans (Shenell Edmonds), a teenage girl who had an
abortion

The musical episodes and events, which showcased the singing and
dancing talents of the cast and crew. Some of the most popular ones
are Fraternity Row: The Musical (1990), One Pure People (1994), Bo and
Nora s Wedding (2010), and Starr X d Lovers: The Musical (2010)

The crossovers and references to other shows, especially All My
Children and General Hospital, which shared the same universe as One
Life to Live. Some of the characters who appeared on both shows are
Skye Chandler (Robin Christopher), Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), Alex
Olanov (Tonja Walker), and John McBain (Michael Easton)

The Rumors and Possibilities of a Reunion or Revival
One Life to Live may have ended its original run in 2013, but the fans
never gave up hope for a comeback. In 2013, Prospect Park, a
production company, revived the show online for a short-lived season,
which featured some of the original cast members and some new ones. In
2019, ABC announced that it had regained the rights to the show and
was exploring the possibility of a reboot or a spin-off.

More rumors and speculation about the future of the show. Some of the
possibilities are:

A major streamer might surprise the fans by releasing a limited series
revival, called One Life to Live: The Next Chapter, which consisted of
10 episodes and reunited some of the fan-favorite characters, such as
Todd, Blair, Starr, Viki, Dorian, Clint, Bo, Nora, and John. The
series also introduced some new characters, such as Lila Manning
(Olivia Holt), Todd and Blair s youngest daughter; Max Lord (Tom
Holland), Dorian s long-lost grandson; and Leo Buchanan (Noah
Centineo), Bo and Nora s adopted son. The series was well-received by
the critics and the fans, and was nominated for several awards,
including an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series.

A second season of One Life to Live: The Next Chapter, which would
continue the stories of the characters and introduce more new ones.
The showrunner, Ron Carlivati, who was also the head writer of the
original show, said that he had already mapped out the plot for the
next season and was waiting for the green light from Hulu. He also
teased that he had some surprises in store for the fans, such as the
return of some familiar faces and the revelation of some shocking
secrets.

A spin-off series, focusing on a specific character or family from the
show. Some of the potential candidates are the Cramers, the Mannings,
the Buchanans, or the Vegas. The spin-off could explore their lives in
a different location, such as Los Angeles, New York, London, or Puerto
Rico. The spin-off could also feature some crossover appearances from
the original show.

A movie adaptation, which would condense the history and the drama of
the show into a two-hour film. The movie could be a prequel, a sequel,
or a standalone story, featuring some of the most popular characters
and actors from the show. The movie could also be a musical,
incorporating some of the songs and dances from the show. The movie
could be released in theaters, on streaming platforms, or on
television.

Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain: One Life to Live will
always have a special place in the hearts of its fans and the history
of television. The show, which started as a daring experiment, became
a cultural phenomenon and a soap opera legend. As the show s theme
song says, You re only young once, but you can be young at heart
forever.
