I'm not particularly fond of the Nick character, but he totally held my
attention when he was telling the police what had happened to him. He
seemed genuinely shocked and scared. I was really moved. I watched that
part twice, it was so good.

Same here Suzanne.
Gary was very upset and bothered by it... he is a very (overly)
sensitive guy. But as i said to him- if they are going to have a full
on "gay storyline", it, unfortunately- must show that ugly side of it
too. The intolerance and hate.
As he said to Gigi in Rodi's "It comes with the territory".

I would like to see the intolerance and hate a little less black-and-white,
though. Yes, I am sure there are thugs out there who go around beating up
gays for no reason, but I would prefer to see otherwise normal characters
show some intolerance and discomfort. Perhaps turning someone down for a
job due to his orientation, or not letting him be around kids, or something
more subtle like that. I think that would be more realistic.

On the up side, I love that three of the four gay characters are confidently
out and proud, with no confusion or angst. Fish's outing has been coming
along nicely too--he seems uncertain and a little embarrassed, but trying to
accept himself. Not a whole lot of drama in that particular area--no
self-loathing, no soul-searching; just confusion as to how to act, and
trepidation about the upcoming first sexual encounter, which seems so real
and beautifully played out.

I see your point and agree whole-heartedly. All of those things you
mentioned happen every single day to some gay person somewhere.

Unfortunately-- what you saw on the show is not so unrealistic.
Especially so when Gay issues (marriage, in the military, etc.) are in
the news alot and are Hot Topics, there is a sort of backlash- gay
bashing (verbal and / or physical) go on the rise. Even here in the
San Francisco Bay Area- the "Gay Mecca", we are not immune to such
things.

Indeed. I think much of it has been very well done, especially for
daytime tv. Non-sterotypical.

Don't even get me started on the over-rated cliche' known as "Will &
Grace"! LOL

The acting on the show overall has been particularly outstanding this
week - there was the scene on Monday which started the thread - and when
it continued on Tuesday with Nick having nightmares, Marty doing her
counseling (a lesser actress might treat that as "prop duty" scene and
not put much into it, but SH was fully showing why she's a two-time Emmy
winner) as well as Melissa Archer and Brian Kerwin who have both just
been doing their finest work consistently since their entire respective
tenures on the show!

I've been particularly impressed with both the acting and the writing in
the gay stories - the election stuff got a little over-the-top and
ridiculous but most of the time it's all rang so true and closer to what
i've seen and experienced in real life than perhaps any other show with
gay characters to date.
