Folks,

What was the reason for "Nowhere Man" being cancelled after only one season?

Pretty much for the same reasons any other show made in the U.S. is
cancelled, low ratings.

Also keep in mind it was on a independent network (UPN) early on, and was
struggling just to sign up affiliates (markets in the states).

If it was on a larger network (cbs, nbc, abc, fox) it could of gone on longer
even if the ratings were so-so, provided an executive at the network had
faith in the show.

The smaller networks like UPN are sort of a double edged sword, they'll be
more apt to take risks on show like NWM but don't have to resources to keep
it going if the advertisers don't flock to it.

Also I think at the time NWM showed on UPN, it was the year of "Dramatically
Different" where UPN tried programming all drama shows on the schedule, no
comedies or game shows. Even though they only had like 8 to 10 hours a week
of programming to fill, that idea didn't work out too well.

Another reason I think Larry pointed out was there was some mid-season
tinkering from the network executive pinheads. Thats where someone gets
involved from the network and forces the director/producers to move the show
in a different direction or add circus acts to improve the quality.

What usually happens is the meddling generally starts to irritate the loyal
base of fans the show already developed so instead of improving things, the
ratings sink more.

So I guess you can say there are many reasons for the reason, but the main
reason is still low ratings.

Thanks for your reply! It's sad, though, that it was cancelled... It had an
idea and a story that I, for one, have never seen in any other series...

Check out Nowhere Man creator Larry Hertzog's interesting and unusual
podcast which now had more episodes that NwM ever did at:
