The Nicktoon Rewards: Category Spotlight

First up, it's Best Moment. OK, in 12 years of Nicktoons, there are
going to be some moments that are just so darn memorable. Here are
what I picked (and why):
* Otto skating with Tony Hawk, Rocket Power, "Enter the Hawk-trix"
Why: Hey, if you're gonna have an ep with Tony Hawk, you're gonna have
to at least have a main character skate with him, right? (Not to be
outdone, Reggie's Big Break has his big sis Reg skating with Andy
McDonald.) "Power Play", OTOH, was another story.
* The Rocket siblings tying for Prince(ss) Waikikamukau, Rocket Power,
"Race Across New Zealand"
Why: It's the Rockets finally bringing something home, as well as an
assertation of girl power.
* Angelica and Tommy singing at a concert, Rugrats, "All Growed Up"
Why: The flashbacks, the fact that they're older, and the fact that
they're singing at a concert.
* Arnold discovers map in parents' journal, Hey Arnold!, "The Journal"
Why: It's the main reason many of us are pushing for the 2nd film to
conclude this particular thread.
* Nigel knighted, Thornberrys, "Sir Nigel"
Why: What can I say? It's Nigel's crowning glory.
* Sasha kisses Ginger, Ginger, "Camp Caprice"
Why: Because it got everyone's hope up for a good romance between the
two (tho "Ginger's Solo" was another story)
* Arnold dumps Lila, Hey Arnold!, "Timberly Loves Arnold"
Why: Because it changes everything. Sets up a good romance with Helga
too.
* Didi gives birth, The Rugrats Movie
Why: It's a nicely done sequence, something you probably wouldn't
expect to see on the TV show. Though Dil himself does leave something
to be desired... :/
* Chuckie speaks for the first time, Rugrats in Paris
Why: Once again, it's something that changes everything. Finster
talking to the adults now (although just one word)? Now that's a
clever idea.
* Helga's confession and the kiss that followed, Hey Arnold! The Movie
Why: C'mon, you were probably waiting for it ever since Craig said in
a chat that it would happen. (Then again, this was the same chat that
he mentioned his spinoff in.)
* Eliza's confession, The Wild Thornberrys Movie
Why: Sets up one of the nominees for Best Character Development: her
big sis Deb being threatened to be changed into a baboon. Not to
mention that it also sets up an assertation of her own ability,
whatever that is.
* Helga whispering "Merry Christmas, Arnold", Hey Arnold!, "Arnold's
Christmas"
Why: Because someone submitted this to me in an email.
Tell me what you think of these, and submit some more if you feel like
it. I'll be posting other categories of interest as we go along.

First, Best Recurring Character nominees:
Nadine: The resident bug lover of Hey Arnold!, who *wouldn't* want her
to get her own focus ep? ;-)
Sheena: Same deal with the resident pacificist. ;-)
Curly: What's not to like about a maniac who wants to free animals
from the zoo?
Kip and Biederman: And how about this Abbott and Costello-ish pair of
poachers?
Susie (Rugrats): The voice of reason on the original, now trying to be
a singer on All Grown Up!... shades of Taina perhaps?
Trent (RP): He's a potential love interest for Reggie. Enough said.
Breezy (RP): She's caught Ray's eye, now let's see if she catches your
votes.
For Worst Recurring Character, we have so far:
Mackenzie (RP): Known mostly for winning a sandcastle contest, beating
not only Lars but also Reggie, she's annoying beyond belief.
Timmy McNulty (Rugrats): Before Dil came along, the same voice actress
Tara Strong did this character's voice. Think about it.

Peapod Kid (HA!): OK, we don't know that much about him (quite
frankly, this is why I'd left him out the first time), but apparently,
his family is about as well-off as Rhonda's. Besides, it's not every
day you can call a kid a vegetable and get away with it.

OK, here is my own opinion while I was compiling this category: It's
hard to make a category for recurring character when, outside of HA!,
there aren't many per se in Nicktoons to begin with. Also, what about
the likes of Ruth McDougal, who only had one more appearance than that
guy who directed PS 118's school play (and you might actually consider
them to be equal if you cut "Operation Ruthless" out)?
So my own discretion for this category is: if they've not appeared
often enough to be regulars, but haven't appeared too sporadically to
consider them guests, I list them under recurring. Tell me what you
think of this.

He got a good episode (CURLY'S GIRL), but Nick just won't put it in the
rotation.
allegedly, all the secondary characters were pencilled in for their own
spotlight episodes, but then PARTY WAGON kind of scotched that...

They're too incompitent to be interesting. Great villians make for great
heroes...

Dreadful character for a dreadful show.

For Hey Arnold, you could use Park, Robert, or Smythe-Higgens.

remain static... but occasionally something will happen that changes
everything (OK, not everything but you get the idea). This category
recognizes these.
* Susie, minor character on Rugrats, becomes regular on All Grown Up!
It's not every day that a minor (at best) character on one show
becomes a major character on another, so this is worth a mention.
* Arnold dumps Lila
Suddenly, Helga's chance for Arnold has been significantly increased.
It's remarkable enough that this show gets rave reviews despite its
lack of character developement... so imagine how rave the reviews
would be if they did have it.
* Chuckie speaks for the first time
OK, it's just one word, and it hasn't played a big role in the plot of
a TV ep yet... but still worth a mention.
* Debbie threatened to be turned into a baboon
Gideon keeps saying that an ep where this threat comes into play is
going to be made... no matter whether one is made or not, this
particular development at the very least gets the sisters closer.
* Darren's braces removed
His face literally gets changed for the better. It's a set up for the
whole Ginger/Darren thing in Far From Home.

sometimes put new life into an old show... or it may drag it down
quite a bit. For this category, we pick only those who weren't
properly introduced until after the first season. Here are the
nominees for Best Newcomer:
Noelle (ATBG): She's weird, and just the right girl for Carl. How can
you *not* like her? ;-)
Charlotte (Rugrats): Now we know where Angelica gets her bossiness
from.
Lulu (Rugrats): Nice to see Grandpa Lou get married to someone...
Taffy (Rugrats): Hey, she's talented.
Susie: Not just the voice of reason, but the most talented of the
babies.
Kimi and Kira: As they say, opposites attract. Especially where Kimi
and Chuckie are concerned...
Lila (HA!): Hey, she's ever so sweet...
Trent (RP): Reg's love interest. Enough said.
Breezy (RP): The new employee at the Shore Shack, and as some are
thinking, their potential new stepmom (though I do have inside info
that Ray eventually gets yet another GF).
Now, the Worst Newcomer nominees:
Dil: As a baby, he's just, well, a poophead. But wait until you see
him in All Grown Up!.
Taffy: Does Rugrats *really* need teenaged plots?

Actually, this pitch was meant to say "She's weird, telekinetic, and
just the right girl for Carl. How can you *not* like her? ;-)".
Explanation: I'd put the pitches in a text file, and when I posted
this, I decided to make some last-minute edits. When I pressed post,

(girlfriend, if you've not figured it out), will also reveal what

You know the cliche: characters sometimes have better chemistry as
duos than individuals, be they sibs or just best friends. This still
rings true in animation. And so, these categories salute the best
pairings. First, it's Best Onscreen Duo:

Curly and Rhonda (HA!)

And next we have Best Siblings. Because sometimes, some kids need a
little brotherly love (or, as the case may be, sisterly love). (Note
that we only nominate pairs where both have major character status.

his room in "Information Stuporhighway" I think he could even give Jimmy

Hey, what about Timmy and his fairy godparents? That should qualify if Rudy's

Anyway, out of those three, I think Eliza's ability to talk to animals is the
coolest.

Upon reviewing the Biggest Disappointment of 2003 category, I've
decided to add a Biggest Disappointment of all time category as well.
Here the nominees for that category, complete with analysis.
* Waste of NHL stars, Power Play, RP
OK, if you're going to go through all the trouble to get NHL stars to
cameo in your sports-based show, the least you could do is get them to
play with the main characters (see my note on RP's Tony Hawk cameo).
However, the machinations of the plot prevent this from happening...
go figure.
* Sasha back with Clover, Ginger's Solo, Ginger
It's bad enough that the last thing Ginger wanted to see after such a
long trip to his school was Sasha back with his old GF, it's even
worse when you consider that it is directly in the face of what he
said in Camp Caprice: that looks and money didn't matter. But it is
apparent here that the only reason Sasha is attracted to Clover is for
those 2 things... once again, go figure.
* Joe Murray's promise to return after Rocko
Well, he promised (shrugs)...
* Craig Bartlett walks out on Nick
He'd been talking so much about the 2nd movie and what was going to
happen and all, and quite a few of us at the Nick newsgroup were
pumped up... and then this happened. Couple that with a bad showing
for the telefilm-turned-cinema film, and you get a recipe for
disaster.
* Rejection of HA! spinoff The Patakis
Same deal with this one. He also talked about it a lot, and then he
told us that all the Viacom nets rejected it.
* Eliza Unplugged delayed, after promos for it had aired
It's ironic that some people think that the kiss they'd shown in the
promos was the reason it got delayed... and it's also the final ep of
a 5 ep story arc, not unlike the eps with Tyler Tucker, as well.
* Preschool Daze still unaired on Nick US, Rugrats
And they have a spinoff based on this ep (KC promises a new look for
it as well) coming sometime soon. What gives?
* Ren and Stimpy eps edited on Spike TV
They said it wouldn't be edited, but they edited it anyway. How's that
for a slap in the face?
* Zim cancellation
Clear proof that Nick is trying so hard to shove the adults off the
Nick bandwagon. It was popular... among adults and Emmy voters, but
(apparently) not among the all-important (to them) kids' demo.
Suggest more nominees if you want. As I mentioned in the original
post, next will be the Best Regular Character categories.

Jezz, do you hate TFOP or something? If you watched the show, you'd understand
that Timmy is a good kid.

personal analysis of the nominees in each of the categories. Make of
it as you will:
Best Regular Character (Male):
Arnold: Probably the smartest main character in a Nicktoon, until
Jimmy came along, but he doesn't make Arnold any less deserving of a
nomination...
Tommy: There's something to be said about Rugrats' born leader... but
imagine what he'll do with a video camera in All Grown Up!.
Gerald: Tall on personality, urban legend knowledge... and hair. ;-)
SpongeBob: People seem to like him a lot, so there. Happy?
Zim: Put him in there just for sentimental reasons. Who cares what the
execs think anyway? ;-)
Otto: Hey, he has his fans.
Best Regular Character (Female):
Reggie: The only bright spot in the whole of RP. Her plots are better
than the average RP plot.
Debbie: Just about everyone who watches TWT likes Eliza's big sis.
Even the reviews for the movie say that she steals the show. Think
about it.
Angelica: People who like Rugrats seem to like her, so she must be
doing something right... ;-)
Helga: Her character actually has depth, and was even pencilled for
her own spinoff.
Phoebe: This school genius actually has some personality behind that
big brain... try saying that for most other geniuses.
Ginger: Many schoolgirls can relate to her, even if her life is a bit
unrealistic...

Worst Regular Character:
Nigel: Big nose, big teeth, and a snotty British accent. What more
could you want?
Donnie: Well, if you behaved like an animal, no one would like you
either! ;-)
Eliza: Glasses, freckles, braces... I know KC were not trying to make
her pretty (they wanted to give her a big nose as well), but did they
have to make her so ugly??? Sometimes, personality alone isn't going
to be enough.
Otto: The lamer RP plots usually seem to center around him. For
example: Otto tries to get a new move named after himself.
Twister: He might be good with a camera and a skateboard, but not so
with that Tommy Pickles voice of his. Especially with all those lame
comments...
Dil: He's gross on Rugrats... I say you wait for All Grown Up!.
Kimi: Well, some people are complaining about her addition...
Taffy: And I repeat myself: does Rugrats need teenaged plots? They can
save those for All Grown Up!.

Her point was to get attention. I don't know if you've heard of the
tennis player Paradorn Srichaphan (hint: he won the TD Waterhouse
tournament last week), but he got noticed first time around by winning
over some tough players. With the same logic, winning the sailboarding
race should have achieved the same thing.
Noelle tries to catch bus... using telekinesis, Foutleys on Ice, ATBG:

That was so snooty and nasty, I think you deserve to be burned.
Now seriously, Nigel is real funny and Tim Curry is such a right voice for him.
Also, Timmy is a very nice kid who really cares for the people around him,
including his fairies. They are very good characters who you are just knocking
around for their apperances (even if you make a good arguement for Nigel's
annoying voice and claim that there are elements to Timmy that make him
unlikeable, which are not exactly clear).
Besides, I look like Eliza, considering my braces, glasses and freckles.

No. >_< You cannot just list popularity as a reason. It's just me, but you
really need better material besides "hey, people like them!"

I agree with your observation: any episode revolving around her is
usually very well produced and enjoyable to watch. I also agree that
both decisions Reggie made (both in quitting the triathalon and
jumping off her board in the windsurfing race) weren't the best.

Any idea why? Here are my theories:
a: her plots tend to revolve around the concept of girl power (like
the rugby ep), or girl life (hanging out with Sherry and Trish)...
now, you can't exactly have these plots with Otto and Twister. (NB:
there's even an ep with Reggie and a snowboarder with a metal pipe for
a leg. Actually won an award from the Association for the Severely
Handicapped.)
b: she's supposed to be the smarter of the characters... I mean, she
has a laptop for crying out loud!

I also think that it's her character. In "Reggie's Big Break", she
cautiously accepts the spotlight as the "Good 2 Go" reporter and,
while she enjoys it and seems to do her job naturally, takes her fame
with a grain of salt; Otto would have hogged it completely no
questions asked since he feeds on attention. At the same time, she's
a minority in the group (the only regular girl) who not only has to
deal with personal issues by herself (without her mom) but must put up
with Otto's attitude. I think the way she deals with her problems
attracts viewers to her because of her personal resolve. She is an
active girl among a group of mostly males, who has a spunky yet
sensitive character--as it has been said before in this group, it's a
winning combination for a cartoon character.
She is one of the smarter characters, no doubt about it--that's why I
think she and Sam go well together. I guess that's why she has been
called the group's "voice of reason".
